Guest I Got Banned for Sucking Report post Posted May 22, 2004 Well, this year's Origin 1 is not far off at all now. Who do you barrack for? Queensland? New South Wales? Who will walk away with the glory in 2004?
spiny norman 0 Report post Posted May 22, 2004 Rugby League is near dead in Australia now. Only Queensland and New South Wales have any kind of feelings towards it, and a growing amount of people I know are growing increasingly apathetic. I used to care about this, but not anymore. Guest JacK Report post Posted May 22, 2004 Yeah, same; I used to care heaps, but I haven't watched a game of league in 3-4 years. The whole Super League thing fucked it up for me. Get rid of the Illawarra will you ya bunch of communist nazi's . . .
Guest I Got Banned for Sucking Report post Posted May 22, 2004 Yeah, but that aside, you just can't miss Origin. I'm hoping that Queensland do a bit better than they did last year... Boy, did we get our asses kicked...
Guest TheAustralian Report post Posted May 22, 2004 I disagree, SOO is still the top rating sporting event in this country, it out rates the AFL grand final, super 12 and everything else, and it is the most exciting event in the australian sporting calender, you watch your aerial ping pong, I'll watch a real game.
Adam 0 Report post Posted May 22, 2004 I'm not a Rugby fan, but I'll still listen to Roy and HG on Triple J doing the SOO. I don't really care who wins, but with all of the controversy surrounding NSW, I think QLD is an easy favourite for this years series. Oh, and TheAustralian, keep your Rugby, give me Aussie Rules any day. Much more dramatic than that tackle. stop. tackle #2. stop. tackle #3. stop. tackle #4. stop. tackle #5. kick. Rinse and repeat. spiny norman 0 Report post Posted May 22, 2004 Exactly. The footballs, from best to worst: Soccer, Gaelic Football, AFL, Rugby Union, Rugby League/Gridiron. Though I agree with Adam, I may watch it just for Roy & HG's commentary.
Guest JacK Report post Posted May 22, 2004 Bah . . . your aaaallll wrong . . . cricket and the V8's are the REAL australian sports. They're aren't centralized in NSW/QLD like League, or the other, less important ( ) states like AFL . . . and well they don't suck like Onion. And soccer . . . do they even play that in Australia? Enough of that though . . . Top Rating sporting even in the country . . . ? Really? Seriously? The Bathurst 1000 pulls some pretty good numbers you know . . . And the Melbourne Cup, like *everyone* watch's that.
Guest I Got Banned for Sucking Report post Posted May 27, 2004 Well, Origin 1 was nice and back-and-forth. When we came to a draw, the heart was pumping. I'm going to Origin 2, the most important game - hopefully Queensland can squeak one out there and in 3. Well, kick ass in both of thos games.
spiny norman 0 Report post Posted May 27, 2004 Australian soccer is only improving. If the media actually cared about it Australia could become a great soccer country. If you look at each individual member of that team one could argue that it's deserving of being in the FIFA Top Ten. Almost every time we put out our best team we win. Nobody cares about racing (of the people I know), sorry mate. But yeah, I would think the Melbourne Cup rates better than the State of Origin. And that game was boring as batshit. Sorry. Guest I Got Banned for Sucking Report post Posted May 28, 2004 Yeah, but majority of Australia's blind patriot bogan fucks wouldn't accept soccer as a national sport. No fucking way.
Guest JacK Report post Posted June 1, 2004 Soccer? National Sport? Australia? Does this make me a blind patriot bogan fuck? And damnit i had a test the next day otherwise I would've gone with the rest of the peeps from my college. Came down to a field goal didn't it? sif Queensland gunna win. spiny norman 0 Report post Posted June 1, 2004 Soccer is the most played sport in Australia. Bar none. That's a fact. If the media began giving soccer coverage (which it won't because the sport is too big for them to control, thus they don't want it) then it would be the biggest sport in Australia. I was the 1995 Melbourne World Cup Qualifying game against Iran, and that was the greatest sporting event I've ever been apart of. The atmosphere was electric, the patriotism huge (as *everybody* sang the anthem, then booed the Iranian one), it is in my eyes the greatest and worst sporting event I've ever been a part of. In fact, when we do qualify for the World Cup, then soccer may (hopefully) get the recognition it should have. As I said, it's the most played sport in the country. Not cricket, league, AFL. Now jump on the bandwagon lest ye be left behind, says I to all these naysayers.
Guest croweater Report post Posted June 1, 2004 No way soccer will ever be Australia's national sport. AFL kicks its arse in so many ways. Yes, more people play soccer than AFL, but that's generally because it's a primary school sport. Not many schools want under 12 football teams. Soccer's non contact and therefore more acceptable. The extremely UnAustralian way all the soccerplayers crap on about the smallest contact. Soccer will NEVER be as big as AFL in Australia. Gridiron completely OWNS any from of rugby or soccer. Guest Nanks Report post Posted June 4, 2004 How could soccer EVER become any kind of prominent sport in Australia?? All of our good players immediately fuck off to Europe where there's actually a competition and once they're there, they're not allowed to come home to represent our country. Sure, our second string side can whip all the little island nation sides in Oceania, but who cares?? The media does get behind the soccer when we reach that final playoff series to make the World Cup and so does the public, the MCG was packed for the Aus v Uruguay match, but we inevitably fail. Why would they continue to flog a dead horse?? Personally I'm tired of being constantly let down. And Gaelic Football is better than AFL, League & Union?? You're just saying that to be alternative, tool. First of all, where would you even be watching enough Gaelic to form an opinion and secondly it's just a weak man's AFL as we prove every year. Guest JacK Report post Posted June 6, 2004 Yeah . . . Australia kicks ass at so many sports why would people want to cheer for a sport we suck at? Think about it . . . if you could go to a cricket/rugby game and see Australia win and beat the best, or go to a Soccer game and see Australia win against poor people/get lucky/get smashed by good teams which would you prefer? And no Aussie likes seeing someone get touched and role around like a wuss, fakin an injury to get a penalty. It's just not cricket (to use the coolest phrase ever coined by man). And many people may play soccer . . . but no one watch's it. Hell, how many people have you seen at a club game that isn't a final? In wollongong they wouldda been lucky to get 100 people, and that was the case before our good players pissed off. And SBS gives soccer enough coverage as it is. Any more and it'd drown out the more interesting sports. Like Cricket. Or V8's. Or Rugby.
Guest croweater Report post Posted June 8, 2004 V8's and interesting don't belong in the same sentance. Although they are much better that Indy 500 shit in America. I mean, they go round in a circle and change gears twice per lap maximum. Where's the skill in that?
Guest croweater Report post Posted June 16, 2004 Origini 2 is tonight WOOHOOOOOOOO!!!! ... ... ... ... ... Who won the first one again? Ah NSW the television just reminded me. In that case 'CARN THE MAROONS!!!! EDIT: God skycam is the biggest waste of $1000000 when used in the AFL. It just doesn't work in an oval environment. I hope they start to use it for cricket so someone can smash the shit out of it with a pull shot's top edge or something.
Guest JacK Report post Posted June 17, 2004 Bah. Queensland won. Dagnamit. Oh well, lucky I 1) didn't watch the game as I had an ACST151 exam the next day and 2) dislike League since they got rid of the Illawarra Steelers and SCREWED St Geo-Ill out of the premiership in their debut season . . . SCREWED I tells ya that was no penalty try the guy was falling down after he jumped to catch the kick, Ainscough didn't intentionally do it. I mean go NSW game 3. Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted June 18, 2004 What sport is this thread about, exactly? I genuinely do not know.
Der Kommissar 0 Report post Posted June 18, 2004 I'd assume rugby or something of the sort.
Guest I Got Banned for Sucking Report post Posted June 18, 2004 JacK, be thankful that we won - at least now game 3 will have a suspense factor. I was there live, and got to see the new Skycams for the first time. Very innovative. Maybe not worth the amount of money that was forked out for them, but still good to watch through. Slater was tremendous.
Guest JacK Report post Posted June 18, 2004 ppphhh it says Rugby League in the 2nd post. Imagine Gridiron, but like . . . better. Yeah, I guess the whole suspense factor will be useful for the first 5 minutes before NSW jump out to an insurmountable lead. They need more Dragon's players. Hell, bring back McGregor; I hear he still plays down in Dapto, but he might've stopped.
Guest I Got Banned for Sucking Report post Posted June 18, 2004 We won - without Tallis. I actually wouldn't be surprised if NSW do win the next game - QLD were just on a high after that second game and incredibly optimistic for the third. But maybe this is our year. As for the season's series so far, 1 was great, but 2 on Wednesday night was a tremendous, tremendous game of football.
tommytomlin 0 Report post Posted June 18, 2004 Freddy will show those Maroons in Game 3, just you watch. And as for League being 'near dead' in Australia, the 3.3 million people who saw Origin II (a new record) say you're wrong.
Guest I Got Banned for Sucking Report post Posted June 18, 2004 Freddy will show those Maroons in Game 3, just you watch. And as for League being 'near dead' in Australia, the 3.3 million people who saw Origin II (a new record) say you're wrong. I think some dwindling quality led to him saying that. But on the other side of the fence, Origin always draws big.
muzz 0 Report post Posted June 18, 2004 Don't follow Rugby. No, I'm a South Australian who goes for Fremantle in the AFL.
tommytomlin 0 Report post Posted June 18, 2004 Dwindling quality?! Right now, the competition is as close as it's ever been. The quality of play is better than ever. Watch games like Thursday's Origin, the 2003 Grand Final, Roosters/Dragons from a few rounds ago, or Sharks/Broncos from 2 rounds ago. It's absolutely fantastic stuff, and it's happening nearly every week. I fail to see how League is suffering 'dwindling quality'.
Guest I Got Banned for Sucking Report post Posted June 19, 2004 Oh, I agree. I just thought that that must've been why you said it, because everyone is still watching.
Guest DR PHIL Report post Posted June 21, 2004 I'm pleasantly surprised to see this thread in here. Fucking great game origin 2 after a pretty boring origin 1. Slater's try was a fucking piece of genius! Looks like we'll get smashed the next game at the telstra? stadium where we have a fucking hopeless record. Fuck it anyway, QUEENSLANDER!!!/Billy Moore.
