Guest Choken One Report post Posted May 29, 2004 from USAToday PLEASANTVILLE, N.J. (AP) — A middle school honor student who was humiliated when his basketball coach gave him a "Crybaby Award" last month was feted at a school assembly Friday with applause from his peers and an apology from the coach. Ousted Pleasantville Middle School coach James Guillen presented Terrence Philo Jr. with a certificate, a trophy and the first-ever Terrence Philo Jr. Award. "I would like to extend a special apology to the Terrence Philo family," Guillen told the boy in front of about 250 of his cheering classmates. He blamed his error last month on "my lack of experience as a coach and as a teacher." St. Joseph's basketball coach Phil Martelli also was on hand to see the boy honored. Philo, an eighth-grade honor student, was a guard on the team, which went 12-3 and won its division championship. Guillen, a teacher in his first year as coach, had told him to be sure to attend the team's April 24 banquet to accept an award. But when he showed up, Guillen gave him a Crybaby Award trophy for always pleading to get into games. The boy's family was irate, and Guillen was removed as coach, suspended from his teaching job for five days and lost a scheduled pay raise. The boy's determination to participate was the impetus behind the new award, which will go each year to a student who demonstrates dedication and team spirit. Philo said he was pleased. "How they did it this way, it's better," he said. Martelli, who guided the Hawks to a surprising run at the national championship this past season, said the assembly would help everyone involved learn from what happened. "It's an unfortunate situation that I think has ended in a positive vein," he said.
Damaramu 0 Report post Posted May 29, 2004 So.....why does the kid get an award? Because he was bad but complained loud enough? What kind of an example does this set? "Hey do bad at something and mommy and daddy will bail me out of any situation in life!" Jeez......this liberal PC bullshit is starting to bug me.
EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted May 29, 2004 Its Liberal PC to get pissed off when you publicly humiliate a 14 year old kid?
Guest Choken One Report post Posted May 29, 2004 Yep. Humilation builds character...that or leads to School Shootings... doesn't hurt to take a chance... I guess the coach learned that no matter how shitty the kid is...you MUST play him. I hated that rule growing up that EVERYONE had to play...Excuse me for having actual talent at swinging a Aluminum Bat at a fucking ball when your pathetic weak kid can't put down the doughnut to pick up the damn bat...and they ALWAYS put their chocolate little debbie stains on MY fucking Slugger....that said kid? I believe he killed himself in our sophomore year...Im not sure...no one cared about him to double check.
Damaramu 0 Report post Posted May 29, 2004 Yes the award was a little bit out of line. And the guy should've been in trouble. But to have to attend sensitivity training? Lose his job? Have to hold a seperate banquet to give the kid a "Hey you aren't any good but your parents complained loud enough so here you go!" award? Yeah it was wrong but they went to far in the punishment. The kid especially didn't deserve another award. If this had happened to me when I was 14 my dad would've laughed and I probably would've made some joke about it. Guest Choken One Report post Posted May 29, 2004 exactly but today's parents watch Oprah and are forced to believe Kids actually have feelings and that shit like this actually affects them... NEWSFLASH TO YOU FUCKING PARENTS! KIDS HAVE NO FEELINGS! Just like those arrogant clowns on the news all time...trying to tell us the negative effects of bullying...just because you got beat up at school doesn't mean you have the right to make it all right to be a wussified bastard and that it's ok that you are pathetic at sports and social life in general...because it's NOT. Guest Salacious Crumb Report post Posted May 29, 2004 This is a horrible lesson for the kid. The Coach went too far but this kid's going to be a whiner for the rest of his life now that he's gotten his way over and over. How many jobs are going to put up with that? Damaramu 0 Report post Posted May 29, 2004 Kids have feelings. Yeah the guy should've been punished but this whole experience is giving the kid a negative outlook on life and making him believe everything is cushy. Hell he might not be any good. What's he going to do when he doesn't even get on the god damn team in college? Run to mommy and daddy?

EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted May 29, 2004 Hell he might not be any good. What's he going to do when he doesn't even get on the god damn team in college? Run to mommy and daddy? That's ridiculous. They're not giving him an award to make up for not playing him. They're making up for making a fool out of him in front of his peers. There's a difference. KingPK 0 Report post Posted May 29, 2004 A whiner for the rest of his life? How the hell would YOU know that? Who cares if the kid wasn't good? IT'S FREAKIN' MIDDLE SCHOOL BASKETBALL!!! Jeez, we aren't grooming the next Kobe here, it's just a bunch of 13 year olds running around the court for a few hours; let everyone join in. The whole thing was just a really stupid joke that blew up in the coach's face. If people are taking basketball games involving SEVENTH GRADERS seriously, then there is a major problem here. Damaramu 0 Report post Posted May 29, 2004 He shouldn't get an award for being humiliated though! An apology yes....but to make up an award!? Hey my boss yelled at me in front of the rest of the staff over something I didn't do today.....can I have an award!?
KingPK 0 Report post Posted May 29, 2004 (edited) I think Choken was picked last in the big kickball game. I'll agree that the second award and the big assembly was a bit much, but I guess the coach just wanted to get the parents off his ass. If there is a problem with youth sports, it's the parents. Guest Salacious Crumb Report post Posted May 29, 2004 A whiner for the rest of his life? How the hell would YOU know that? I'm just going from personal experience. Most of the people I went to school with that were whiners like this kid are even worse now.

Slayer 0 Report post Posted May 29, 2004 How many jobs are going to put up with that? Back to the subject, fuck this kid up the ass with a splintery wooden dildo. I would have been fine with just the apology, but to make a fucking ceremony out of it, as well as naming a fucking award after him? I would love to beat him over the head with his own plaque
TSA09 0 Report post Posted May 29, 2004 There was a softball coach around here who gave out his own personal Titty Baby awards. Some got pissed, some thought it was funny. The school saw nothing wrong with it. And Slayer, your picture of TO made me laugh.
2GOLD 0 Report post Posted May 29, 2004 I hope he tries out for the high school team and whines to his parents when his worthless ass doesn't make it. Yeah I was picked on as a kid, I was bullied and I turned out just fine thank you very much. Plus, he should have had a sense of humor about the award. He could have started a TRADITION at the school! The award could have become to his Middle School like the Mr. Irrelvant award is to the NFL. Life would be much better if people would look on the bright side of stuff like this and get a bloody sense of humor. I would have carried that award around in my backpack all year long and I would have used it as driving factor to get better. Instead, he'll be the kid who will have his rear kicked on a regular basis for being a little b*tch when he gets to high school. You think High School jocks won't shred him when they learn about the dorky freshman who needed a big group hug arranged by mommy and daddy? He thought things were bad before, he has just set himself on fire in a gasoline factory and he seems to stupid to realize it. ETA: What the hell IS the award?? He has one named after him, but what the hell is it for anyway? So what, is it the "little pain in the ass whose parents had to bail him out cause he didn't grow a set of balls yet" award? Guest FrigidSoul Report post Posted May 29, 2004 My aunt gave her high school gym teacher such a hard time that during one of their arguements the gym teacher had a heart attack. That's really all I have to contribute to this thread.
2GOLD 0 Report post Posted May 29, 2004 which will go each year to a student who demonstrates dedication and team spirit. So, when you whine you want to play but don't put any effort into improving so you'll get in the game...you'll get the Terrence Pilato Jr award? Oh and they already give awards to the players with team spirit so go put on your skirt and learn your cheers sissy.
Guest Salacious Crumb Report post Posted May 29, 2004 My aunt gave her high school gym teacher such a hard time that during one of their arguements the gym teacher had a heart attack. That's really all I have to contribute to this thread. My gym class during the course of 5 months broke the teacher's nose twice and messed up one of his knees pretty bad. I suppose we played a little too rough.
Slayer 0 Report post Posted May 29, 2004 If I was a future student who was up for that award, I'd turn it down so fast No way I'd want a bogus award named after some whiny kid

Ripper 0 Report post Posted May 29, 2004 Okay, when does the "Hey I am a badass and hate everything in the world" act end around here. This coach took it upon himself to get this kid to come to a banquet, told him to bring his parents, basically to point at him and call him a bitch. In what world is it cool for a grown ass man to try and insult, embarass A FUCKING CHILD. A kid asked to get in a MIDDLE SCHOOL BASKETBALL GAME. How DARE he!! He obviously went to practice and did everything else to stay on the team. Its middle school ball. Why not let the kid play. And even if you didn't why try your best to make sure the child is going to be embarassed(telling him to make sure to come because he was going to get a very special award). A grown man was trying to be cruel to a child and people are downing the child. And the parents, from every interview at least, only asked for a apology and that he be given the same trophy that every other player on the team recieved. That isn't much to ask for. The school did the whole assembly thing as a Publicity thing and thats all. How are you going to blame the CHILD for this. All that you should expect for your kid in sports at this age (I mean seriously this is basically little league) is that your kid get treated with respect. This coach did every thing possible to make this little kid feel like crap. Fuck him.

Slayer 0 Report post Posted May 29, 2004 Meh It reminds me of in sitcoms or movies when everyone is laughing at some insensitive situation and then someone comes in and says "How DARE you!" and then everyone is all awkward and shuts up. I stand by everything I said earlier
Guest FrigidSoul Report post Posted May 29, 2004 Ripper's personality was molded by old Threes Company, Family Matters, and Good Times episodes. As a child he was sent to the principal's office for being too "spunky" by using the word Dy-no-MITE!
