Any of you Americans interested in soccer?

Recommended Posts

Guest The Rising Star

Some Americans say that soccer isn't action-filled, but Am. football is mostly running 3 yards, faling, and getting 10 fatsos over you. Then you get those stupid 1st try, 2nd try and so on, where the clock stops, and everyone do homo-erotic buttclaps.

And how can you call it American when it was invented by a Norwegian?

And the ball touches the foot on rare occasions in Am. Football, it should be called something else.

If you want to be a soccer fan, watch Argentina-England from World Cup 1998, and you'll see action and plenty of it.

I played youth Soccer up until my Freshman year in Highschool. So I appreciate the game more than some who never have played it. It is very fun to play. And I love the World Cup. But I like baseball a little too much, and our Pro Soccer league is still in its growing phase, but with Adu, hey it might catch on more. Its just that our football really developed here, along with baseball, so more of the people in the States feel more attached to those sports, than soccer. But more and more youth soccer leagues are popping up, I think, so more and more generations are growing up at least understanding the game. And so at least more people can least understand the game. And my High School won the regional my Senior year (regionals was the highest championship in the Bay Area) so that was a fun experience.

Soccer is hockey without ice, weapons, violence, and organ music.

Or scoring.

Or entertainment value...

To whomever wrote the initial post --- please note that your attitude is why a great many Americans sh*t all over soccer.

That, and we have a desire to be entertained.

If you want to generalize Football...Let's Generalize Soccer.

Bunch of fuckers standing there kicking a ball back and forth and making about 5 attempts TOTAL(combined) to score.

But it has a pretty field...i'll give you that.

Now...Rugby...a sport that combines the ideals of Soccer and Football are a perfect mixture...why isn't this the world's most popular sport?

Even though Stuff magazine ran an article on the 20 most gruesome sports injuries ever, and one of them was a Soccer player whose leg broke in a way that put a big curve in his leg. It was pretty nasty, I think the player who saw this happened is still going to therapy over the injury.

The one thing that I will give soccer crowds elsewhere is their enthusiasm. Man, those crowds can get loud... Sometimes putting some of our crowds to shame. But I still love Football, and our college crowds get loud as well.

well...Consider this...

In most those countries...it's all those pathetic people have.

America has more to play with...thus sapping our "euthusiasm"

Okey, don't you guys understand that I exaggerated in my first post? I watched SuperBowl this year, and loved it when Adam Venetiari scored the field goal.

And as far as you Americans have more entertaining sports, the only American sport is baseball of the major 4. Basketball was invented by Canadian James Naismith, I don't know who invented ice hockey though...

And I love NBA, and like watching NHL and MLB, if I recognize some of the players.

So everyone who is un-American is pathetic? Wow, you better thank those Brits who moved to that swamp of yours and killed Native Americans.

ummm...I was refering to the nations in Africa and smaller nations where these "riots"(showing more euthusiasm) occur...which the post above mine made mention of.

I didn't say YOU were pathetic.

The only reason to watch soccer is the World Cup or a international friendly with our rival Mexico. Bascially nobody cares for 4 years just like every other olympic sport.

If I really cared about soccer I would watch Fox Sports Espanol all day since that is the only channel that shows UEFA or Champions League or Premier League matches. But I get tired of Jueventes vs Real Madrid or Man U vs Liverpool or Boca Jrs. vs Racing. Sometimes ESPN shows some big games with that Irish commentator Shamus doing the play-by-play but for some reason I cant get into it.

Besides out soccer league is a joke MLS get lower ratings than Poker!

The Brits are the source of all RACISM~ not only did their decendents kill indians but they went on to send their criminals to Aussie land and went on to kill the locals there and went on holy crusades to kill off the nonbelievers in other lands.

Doesn't mud wrestling draw a 10.0 rating or so in the States?

well...I don't want to dig up the ratings history of what Trish/Stacy did during their mud/pudding match...but the all time highest rating WWE ever got was a 9.1.

So Mud Wrestling has NEVER garnered a 10.0.

I'm a fan of Soccer but I only can really get into it during the World Cup. MLS doesn't have a Philly team, and I can't bring myself to cheer for a team based in New Jersey. The quality of play in MLS simply doesn't match the standards of the rest of the world, and that hurts the sport in this country. I do think soccer is an exciting sport, particularly if you have a rooting interest in one of the teams.

I'd rather watch women's croquet. Soccer is dreadful, and I'm glad I didn't grow up around it.

Hmmmm ... post a thread on a board that's probably 75% American about how the most popular sport in their country sucks. Makes sense, I guess.

To say that American football "is mostly running 3 yards, faling, and getting 10 fatsos over you" is like saying your football is just a guy kicking a ball. It ignores everything that's actually, you know, exciting, and focuses on the most tedious action. (and the fact that soccer players run up to each other and hug when they happen to score a goal is more homoerotic than ANYTHING that happens in American football).

When I was in the UK last year, all my co-workers used to rant and rave about how their players ran for the full 90 minutes. Well, I watched it, and to be honest, they don't. Some sprint occasionally, but most of the players spend a fair amount of time either jogging or just walking (or even just standing there). They probably don't do much more running than an NHL defenseman does skating.

Lastly, the fact that you have to use a game from SIX YEARS AGO to give an example of a really action-packed game is laughable. When was the last one before that, late-80's?

Rising Star, you shouldn't have insulted American Football if you wanted a civil discussion regarding the World's Football.

I played Football for 14 seasons until I was 14 years old. I watch the World Cup every four years, and if there's nothing on but the sport I'll tune in. I also like women's football better than the men's.

One thing I love about the World Cup are the chants and singing from the fans. Simply awesome...

That would be Henrik Larsson (who you can see on the left in my sig). It was just as sickening as the Sid Vicious incident.

He came back though and is one of the most respected and feared strikers in Europe.

And another thing. Referring back to the original post in this thread where it was asked why you call it American Football when it wasn't invented by Americans. You wouldn't call it American Football in America, would you?

He invented it in Mass though, and if you come here claiming otherwise a bunch of people in Larry Bird jerseys will beat you down.

I quite like American Football, as we call it, in small doses. I wouldn't expect Americans to like soccer though; why would you when its such a minor thing over there?

In summary, the person who started this thread is an idiot.

I played organized soccer (over different levels) for about 12 years, and I can honestly say, it's the most fun sport of them all to play, but the most boring to watch.
