And1, Street Ball and the NBA

Recommended Posts

Guest Choken One

It only has sports teams because it has alot of people living there...it's not a media market like Chicago or NYC or Phily or Atlanta or Seattle or LA or SF or Boston...

It's just a giant city of nothing.

Still, it's a giant city.

When I broached the idea that politics are involved in the NBA, just look at Ronald "Flip" Murray of the Seattle Supersonics. For the first half of the season, he averaged 22.7 ppg and shot above 45 percent, but when Ray Allen recovered from his injury, Flip was relegated to the bench and rarely ever seen again.

It's almost like the NBA said, "Hey, we never intended to make you a star, thus you will not become one even on your own accord."

What's funny is that everyone here is telling Orale why these guys don't make it and won't make it and he seems unable to accept these arguments and keeps firing back with the same thing......like a brick wall.

Dude they don't have the skills to play in the NBA. Just because you can make a pass through your legs and then take 5 steps before executing a flashy dunk while a whole host of defenders just stand around and watch you doesn't mean you'll make it in the NBA.

Take the best AND1 team and put them up against the LA Clippers......the Clippers would eat them for lunch.

That's because he was replacing Ray F'ing Allen. You'd have to be a moron to keep a proven talent like Allen on the bench in favor of some rookie who had a few games.

And Cleveland, again, doesn't draw shit for basketball. If your talking about the Browns and Indians you have a point because Ohio is a football/baseball state.

Rafer Alston went to Fresno State, I believe. It took him a few years to settle down on 1 team, but it seems like he's going to be in Miami for a little while.

Ah here we go.....flamebaiting. See you say that to me and expect me to fire back with some kind of a "I do not! Fuck you response."

Whatever.

The AND1 guys simply don't have the talent or basketball knowledge to make it in the NBA. Plain and simple.

Most of those guys in AND1 and on the street are great one on one players and can put on impressive dunking exhibitions.

But when it comes to the fundamentals of basketball and the team concept....they suck shit. Plus they don't know defense.

That's why they aren't in the NBA.

Wow so basically we'll get a league full of Kobe Bryants?! This time maybe without the rape charges!

Streetballers don't play well in the NBA for two big reasons-

1. Asphalt and outside as opposed to laminated wooden floor inside. HUGE difference. Anyone who's ever played a lot of streetball then tries to carry their game over inside knows it's a big difference, affects a lot on how you grip and all that. Now I know AND1 plays a lot of games indoors, but a lot of streetballers play outside.

2. NBA rules. Way too many rules. How many of those treetballers you wanna bet get high as fuck and don't want to deal with all the league bullshit? For some people pride and freedom to do what the hell you want is greater than money.

Take the best AND1 team and put them up against the LA Clippers......the Clippers would eat them for lunch.

No. The Clips would still lose.

The NBA is already deluded with highschool kids adding the hood rats would only make it worst.

"hood rats" ;)

What's that suppose to mean ?

As far as the And-1 guys go, it's not like they can't play or that they lack basic fundamentals. Rather, as is the case with every coulda-woulda-shoulda-been ballplayer, they are usually missing something that makes the difference between streetball legend and NBA player.

For example, "Helicopter" (who played at Middle Tennesse State) has a small forward's game in a 6-foot-2 body. "Main Event" is a power forward/small forward type but he's only 6-foot-4. "Escalade" is just too fucking fat, and doesn't even have the height of an Oliver Miller. "Hot Sauce" is pretty small, and doesn't seem to have the best jumper. And though he can drive by anyone, he can't finish when he gets to the hoop.

A lot of these guys played some college ball, but mostly at D-II or D-III or at junior college ("Professor"). And I don't remember hearing about any of them when they were coming out of high school as far as recruiting. So right there you know that their game is lacking a little bit. But another reason why they didn't play D-I, although some of them have the skills? Grades. The same reason why Qyntel Woods was at a JC before going pro. The same reason why Jermaine O'Neal went pro instead of going to a D-I.

Then you're going to have the guys who were knuckleheads as kids and didn't play for their high school team because they fought with the coach or didn't work out in college because they were too spoiled and what-not. For example, "Alimoe" admitted on one of the streetball shows that he fucked himself over (he went to Fresno State) by being too immature in college.

Basically, I think the And-1 guys are just like any group of talented players, in college or high school or in the NBDL. Some of them could play in the NBA ("AO" had a tryout with the Sonics) and some of them are just missing something. And, honestly, there is a stigma that works against them and I'm sure is harbored by NBA front-office types. Just from reading this thread you can see the roots of that stigma.

I'm sure any of them are better than Slava Medvedenko

Agreed. If Slava just got a little tough and didn't have the whole "Deer In Headlights" look he could be kinda decent.

If any of them were better than Slava, they'd be on the Lakers then, I'm sure.

Slava did put up impressive numbers during Malone's absence.

Now if you said "Shawn Bradley", then I'd agree. I bet he's out of the league as soon as his contract expires.

It wasn't flamebaiting. I called you on the same thing that you called someone else on and we'll just leave it at that.

Slava doesn't even deserve to be a Laker, what kind of impressive numbers did he put up during Malone's absence?

Watch the guy during the playoffs. I think I've seen him make a total of 4-6 points and maybe 2 assists at the most throughout the ENTIRE POSTSEASON. The guy is totally worthless.

The other thing about AND 1 basketball is that 90% of the moves that are done are illegal. I would love to see someone just take an inbounds pass, run the length of the court without dribbling once and dunk the ball. Actually, I think I'll try the if I ever play basketball again.

I should have been more detailed in what I said I guess. He wasn't impressive the *whole* time Malone was out, but he did have a handful of 20-10 games if I recall. But to say dump him for one of the And 1 guys is pretty silly.

Also, I'm pretty sure you were joking (at least I hope) about the Clippers losing to them, but Elton Brand (or even Chris Wilcox for that matter) would eat those guys ALIVE. You could count on one hand the number of *NBA* PF's better than Brand. Plus I doubt any of them can shoot half as well as Magette or Q-Rich.

Let's not forget how many turnovers the AND1 guys would have against an NBA team. They'd try there fancy passes and dribbling that they can only do b/c nobody on the other team plays defense and get eaten up. Not to mention that they would have traveling called every 2 seconds.

Jason Williams (Grizzlies) > Professor (AND1)

There's a player named Professor?

Professor is the only white player on the AND1 Mixtape Tour.

Actually, most NBA players get away with traveling on a consistent basis. For instance, Shaq almost always moves his pivot foot but never gets called for it.
