They need a sweep against Pittsburgh to stay alive or else I really think they're through. Yeah I know it's only June. There's less than four months for the Cubs to get out of 4th place, and frankly, I'm scared. Relax, man. Cubs were 5 1/2 back in August last year before roaring back. Anyone psyched for the Cubs game today, though? Should be a great game. Prior returning is going to be awesome and the Cubs have always hit Fogg well. I'm thinking about taping it. EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted June 4, 2004 Lesson #1 of the nonsense of the save statistic. Dusty Baker places Joe Borowski in the game to pitch the ninth. LaTroy Hawkins, their best reliever, pitched a perfect eighth inning, and could likely have pitched the ninth. However, since its a save situation, the manager just has to use his heralded closer. And of course Borowski gives up a run. And right after Borowski gives up that single, he's pulled from the game. Why? Because its no longer a save situation, and Borowski's not good enough to be trusted with a tie game. What the hell kind of logic is that? The Cubs then had a chance to tie it up, but GAVE them an out with stupid small ball, something they suck at. Then Lee can't get the job done, either, once again. So of course, it comes down to Patterson. And if he's not striking out, he's popping out. If they offered to eat the whole contract and the trade went through then it would just be pathetic. This is why I'm enjoying the fact that the next baseball commish may infact be Larry Luchino. There were articles on the possability of it occuring on the net last year. I'm positive Luchino wouldn't allow through the trades Big George has been getting away with that he shouldn't. Patterson gets booed going 0-2, then has a standing ovation for being walked, then goes 0-2 again, including popping up with the tying run on third and everybody cheering and chanting his name. He then gets booed some more. He's oh for his last eight right now. According to Morrisey in the Chicago Tribune, Corey couldn't draw a walk with a crayon and a piece of paper, and referring to those face-high fastballs Corey just loves to swing at, "you'd need a cherrypicker to hit those balls." So let the losing streak continue, two games in a row where Hollandsworth has had the lone RBI, and two games in a row Borowski blows a save against the Pirates. I thought my south side brethren had it bad against Oakland, but then this guy goes and ruins Prior's return! In MVP Baseball, Borowski, Farnsworth, and Patterson have all been dealt. I'd say don't fix it if it's not broken, but it's safe to say it's broken right now. Hell with this only being JoBo's second blown save; nearly all of his outings have been struggles, as evident by his ERA. Go with the guy who's usually lights out. Contreras Draws Mariners' Interest By TYLER KEPNER Published: June 4, 2004 he Yankees were not alone in their initial assessment of José Contreras. Besides the Boston Red Sox, the Seattle Mariners also offered Contreras a four-year contract after he defected from Cuba in 2002. With Contreras frustrating the Yankees, Seattle is showing interest in him again. The Mariners are in last place in the American League West and are open to making trades, said one baseball official with knowledge of their plans. The official said the Mariners remained interested in Contreras, depending on how much of his contract the Yankees would pay. Contreras is in the second year of a four-year, $32 million deal. Unloading Contreras would be a coup for the Yankees, especially if they could get starter Freddy Garcia and the left-handed reliever Mike Myers in return. The Yankees would need a starter if they gave up on Contreras, and their left-handed relievers, Felix Heredia and Gabe White, have not earned Manager Joe Torre's trust. Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman said the Mariners had not told him of their interest. But Cashman said he expected teams to covet Contreras. "There are people who feel the way we do, which is that this guy has a gigantic ceiling," Cashman said. "Too many people have been at enough games and seen how exciting he is when he's on." Cashman would not comment when asked if he had talked to the Mariners about Garcia, 27, who may be the best starter available on the trade market. Garcia is 3-3 with a 3.01 earned run average and 75-46 in his six-year career. Myers would give the Yankees a left-handed specialist who has had more recent success than Heredia or White. Myers, 34, has held left-handers to a .219 average in 25 games, and the official said the Yankees had inquired about him. The Yankees could be hindered in trades by their lack of major league-ready prospects. But Seattle needs a young catcher and has scouted the Yankees' top prospect, Dioner Navarro of Class AA, within the past two weeks. Garcia can be a free agent after this season, and one of his agents, Chris Leible, said he is open to re-signing with Seattle. But Garcia, who beat the Yankees twice in the 2000 American League Championship Series, would be unfazed by a trade. "I think Freddy can adapt to anything," Leible said. "With his makeup and ability, he will do well wherever he goes." Publicly, the Yankees are supporting Contreras, who has a 7.11 earned run average and failed to finish the first inning of his start on Wednesday.
