Guest Mr. Wrestling Report post Posted June 3, 2004 I'd love to see TSN try to get Off the Record a deal to be aired in the United States in some form. Hell, OTR could be aired on Spike TV as WWE Programming whenever a WWE Wrestler is on. It would be in WWE Experience's time slot ONLY when WWE wrestlers are on because those seem to be very interesting interviews and I think could actually help get some fans educated about professional wrestling. Off Topic- I agree with the guy who said that American Reporters come across as ignorant whenever they interview wrestlers. What's even worse is when you hear people say "They don't get hurt." I remember when I was watching KOTR 1998 and Mick Foley was tossed off of the Hell in the Cell. My buddy taps me on the shoulder and says "He isn't hurt at all." I felt the urge to take him and toss him off 20 foot structure through a table and see how he feels. Mini-Rant over Back on-topic- I think Vince McMahon and Bret Hart meeting is a good thing. At least this means that Vince could at least get Bret to do his DVD. A wrestler DVD needs to have the actual wrestler commentating on it. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Vince said on Part one of the interview that there would be a Bret DVD and that was one of the main reasons for the meeting, I think more then likely Bret will get to pick every Match on the DVD. What was in Vince’s head when Angle said he wanted to face Lesnar, Hogan and Goldberg’s future and steroids in Wrestling. They go to the typical OTR opening. Landsberg says that he doesn’t think Vince thinks that he is serious because he has been on the show 5 times now. Vince laughs. Landsberg asks about Angle wanting to wrestle Lesnar at Mania X9. Vince said it was hard because wrestlers like Kurt want to wrestle hurt and WWE doesn’t want wrestlers to wrestle seriously hurt. Vince says that it is delicate situations where they went through Angle and his doctors and they said yes and no’s, said don’t do some moves that he may land on his head. Landsberg asks if Vince didn’t care about a guy who could have been crippled for his lives. Vince says that he cares about the guys and he can’t get long-term value out of the talent if they are hurt and crippled for long periods of time. Landsberg says they have trouble now with longevity, such as Austin who was on top 6 years ago and now is out. Vince says that it is hard with back and neck problems, but it comes with the territory otherwise don’t get into wrestling. Landsberg asks about Lesnar and Vince building him up. Vince says Brocks concern was more about not liking to be around people, not the road travel. Brock is an introvert, not lots of verbal around people and it is a problem they have with amateur wrestlers. Landsberg asks how crazy is it when Lesnar said that he was going to the NFL and Vince says it is pretty wild because Lesnar was just becoming a box office attraction and it hurt the company when he left. Vince said it blindsided him although he did know that when Lesnar chose WWE after amateur, he had an NFL offer on the table. Landsberg asks if he worries about having the bar so high that people need to go higher and higher, such as Edge. Vince asks if he meant that literally and Michael says yes. Vince says they don’t let people go up high a lot anymore. Vince says he is a father figure to a lot of guys and has to draw a line and no longer let guys do a lot of high spots like there were before. Landsberg asks if they can have a guy for a long period of time now and Vince says it is hard because it takes its toll. Therefore they always need the rising star such as Cena, Guerrero and Benoit. Landsberg asks about having WCW as a competitor and asks if it was good to have them and at times be able to take guys from WCW to fill the roster. Vince says it was good to get guys like Guerrero and Benoit from the WCW roster but only when WCW was a good competitor. They go to break as Landsberg says he is going to ask Vince about the purchase of WCW and if it was a good deal or not. Landsberg says that Vince bought his competition. Vince says he didn’t buy the competition; the competition was going out of business. He said he never thought Ted would ever go out of business but Ted left and then there was an assist in WCW. Landsberg asks if he still wishes if WCW was still around, and Vince says yes because it was good and had talent they could use. Landsberg asks if Turner will be able to come back into wrestling and Vince said no because the startup cost is just too much in today’s market. Landsberg asks about the talent roster on Smackdown and filling it. Vince says he can build around Cena and Guerrero and bring in new stars around those guys. Landsberg asks about a guy like Hogan. Vince says as far as Hogan is concerned, Hogan is probably a candidate for this years WWE Hall of Fame in LA. Landsberg asks about if he is done on the WWE active roster and Vince says yes. Maybe once in a while for the odd pop but for the most part Hogan is done. The investment isn’t worth it on Hogan anymore. The same with the Mr. McMahon character, he isn’t on TV anymore because it isn’t worth the investment. It isn’t worth getting that one PPV and no house shows. Vince now likes to invest in young talent. Landsberg asks why Hogan left the last time and Vince said it was because the WrestleMania payoff wasn’t big enough for him, he was upset and left. Landsberg asks if Hogan was asked to JOB to Big Show because Hogan has a reputation of not wanting to lose to some guys. Vince says that he doesn’t recall but it may have been one of the reasons as why Hogan left. Vince feels Hogan may have earned the reputation he has received. Landsberg asks about Goldberg and if Vince liked him and the contract. Vince said he did because he signed the deal. Vince said Goldberg did what WWE wanted him to do and the door is open. However, Goldberg doesn’t enjoy the day-to-day life in WWE and it is a business decision in investing in a guy who likes to wrestle day to day and will work the house shows. Landsberg asks about guys who live and breathe wrestling, and that it takes 4-5 days a week in wrestling not a few days like Goldberg or Hogan. Vince says it is true because some of the guys who have been on the roster for a long time love wrestling while those who have been there for short stints don’t necessarily live and breath it all the time. They go to break Quirky Fact: Vince McMahon once tried to promote Boxing. Landsberg says that Vince doesn’t watch OTR even though they always send videos. Landsberg asks how Vince would handle the Barry Bonds situation. Vince says it depends how seriously you take baseball and the commissioner of baseball should be taking the sport seriously, but may be conflicted because he once owned a team. He may not be able to do the right thing for the integrity of the sport. Landsberg asks what you do with Barry Bonds and Vince says there are a lot of ways to skin a cat. Vince says they should call on Bonds to test for the integrity of Bonds and the sport. If he doesn’t take testing then you take action, but if he is clean then you leave the guy alone. Landsberg asks how Vince handles it now in WWE and Vince says he doesn’t. They no longer test for steroids because it is expensive, even though they have the money to do it. They are entertainment and they don’t want anyone in the locker room to cheat themselves. Landsberg says that the problem is kids want to look good likes the guys on TV. Vince says guys take steroids because it helps them get back quicker from injuries and he doesn’t think they have any juice heads in WWE, at least he hopes not. Landsberg asks about the FCC. Vince says he likes controversy and is a fighter. As far as the FCC concerned, there isn’t anything left on WWE TV that needs to be taken action against. Landsberg asks if there is a reason for that, if maybe no longer having DX and WCW let them stop crossing the line and Vince said it is because both WWF and WCW were up against each other and it was a matter of who burned out first. WWF thought it would be WCW first and it was and he was thankful for it. However he wouldn’t want to go back to that time period again right now. E-Mail question: How is it to be a grandfather? Vince says he is now the luckiest guy in the world and he no longer has anything to complain about. They come back from break and Landsberg asks Vince to play the name game. Kevin Nash – Good guy, good humor. Scott Hall – Drugs and that is unfortunate. Lex Luger – Egotistic. Sting – Don’t know the guy. Doubt he will come to WWE because of the investment factor. Paul Heyman – Clever, not really clever but clever. Vince then plugs SummerSlam in Toronto. Landsberg asks what’s next for Vince’s business. Vince says international and the new Video on Demand such as the old Bret Hart matches. Vince likes the 24/7 because you can take a look at the old archives and the marketing of guys like Superstar Billy Graham. They shake hands and the show ends. Credit: Mark Cawthorne & PWInsider.com, 411mania The Score in Canada aired an interview with Vince McMahon today. Here are the highlights: Q- Now that TNA has a TV deal is it a good thing that the WWE has some competition now? A- TNA is not competition. They're in the wrestling business, WWE is in the entertainment business. It's a difference of philosophy. They figured the only true competition was themselves, hence the roster split. Q- Would he consider the split a failure at this point? A- Absolutely not. When they were together 70% of their audience watched both shows. Now 30% watch both shows. Claims maybe they did TOO well with the competition they created. [Commentary: not sure how that helps Vince's point] Q- Is Smackdown the weaker show? A- No. Production-wise it's far more polished. You see far more divergent styles of wrestling (mentions Rey, and Angle by name). Q- Wrestling has seen a lot of tragedies over the past few years. Does Vince have a help program in place? A- Wrestlers in the 80s and late 90s lived like rock stars. Today's wrestlers are seen playing video games, reading or surfing the net after shows as opposed to partying in bars. Vince claims today's wrestler is a lot smarter than those of yesteryear and that many wrestlers were sent to counselling. Some graduated, some didn't. Q- We just passed the 5 year anniversary of the death of Owen Hart. Does Vince want to comment? A- Owen was a wonderful human being and called it one of the most unfortunate accidents ever.
