Who's better: Edge or Christian

Recommended Posts

Christian always looks incredibly pointless to me. Whenever I hear his music hit I instantly think pointless and occasionally flip the channel if anything else mildly entertaining is on. Christian can wrestle fairly well and I like him best as a heel. I would like to see Edge as a heel but the potential for him to suck at that is pretty high too.

But I think I'll go with the potential that he might not suck at that so Edge >Christian

Edge, although they are both average wrestlers. Edge reminds me of Sting, a limited average worker who could be carried to good match. Christian reminds you of a late 80s/early 90s jobber, which wouldn't matter if he was a great worker, but he is not a great worker. He is like Edge, average. The only difference is that Edge is a more carriable wrestler. Keep in mind that I am going by 2002 Edge so I may have to wait and see what he does against a better worker.

It's a tough arguement to make in the sense that either one of them are really "ready" but Who is?

Vince himself said this is a period of testing new things out...

Who is better? Overall with the following things

+Working

+Character

+Mic Skills

+Charisma

+Luggage Ability (how well they can be carried)

Working.

Advantage Edge.

Each men has been a singles performer for about the same amount of time (each taking a "brief" return to the tag scenes...Edge with Mysterio and Jericho for X...each having another successful run as tag teamers). However and this is mainly only because of the quality of opposition for the moment, Edge has had a stronger singles career in terms of work...Being in matches with Angle, Benoit, Eddy will do that for you...while Christian was saddled with Booker T for a long time and Jericho doesn't carry as well as Benoit and Eddy does. So Edge pretty much wins this section by default.

Character

Advantage Christian

Christian's character isn't revolutionary or even creative but it's a well tested and time proven gimmick...Cocky Arrogant heel with the Bodyguard and the Sexy Valet. Very reminescent of a Young HBK...Christian has been great at garnering heat for his whole career, first for mocking the faces and the hometowns during the clowny run with Edge and then recently as the overblown cocky heel. Edge; while great as a cohort of Christian's show during their legendary run has been a rather...dull face. His "goofy" edge(pardon the pun) wasn't going to make him a headline main event and his current "serious" edge isn't getting over at all and is pretty much headed to the Heel role we expected him to have since he returned. Christian's character is more enjoyable and workable.

Mic Skills

Advantage Christian.

Even during the E&C heydey, it was Christian bringing the content. Christian's act allows him to be a better mic performer then Edge, who is a poor actor when it comes to conveying emotion as we have seen lately and comes off looking...goofy when trying to channel Jericho's Babyface act.

Charisma

Advantage Edge.

This is a close one...Edge has the bigger presence over Christian and can, with a good crowd elict a reaction. Christian struggled with that at first before aligning with Jericho and then moving into his current character.

Luggage Ability.

Advantage Edge.

This is the biggest seperation between the two of them. Edge has been carried and can pull the act of being carried very well, while Christian can't. Edge has a wider variety in his move set as opposed to Christian who relies on Chinlockery way to much and offers a rather unexcting moveset...Something a person of his character needs...that resilency is what made Shawn a step higher...Christian needs to establish that he can do more then the basics and chinlockery.

Overall...I wouldn't put EITHER of these two in the top "spot" but if I was forced to...I'd give it to Edge...because he brings in the final factor...Marketbility.

The women do love Edge...

and he does have that catchy entrance where runs to one side of the stage, points to the crowd, runs to the other side of the stage points to the crowd and says some unintelligible things

If Edge looks like a better wrestler its only because he's gotten to have programs with better workers. During his last run before the injury, he was working with the five most talented guys on the show.

When I first saw this topic, I was going to go with Christian as the better wrestler without hesitation, but a lot of you make very valid points, so I guess I'm kinda torn, now that I really think about it. I like both guys.

it makes Christian look weak to have to be surrounded by Trish and Tyson Botch-ko just for him to be able to get a win.

That logic would mean that the Horsemen made Flair look weak.

I know, I just think they're dead wrong.

Heels don't need to always look strong. Imagine how boring that would be? You NEED wrestlers like Flair and Xtian who while perfectly capable of getting it done in the ring perfer to take the easy way out.

It's entertaining and it;s why Flair is so popular to this day.

Christian entertains me far more than Edge has ever done. I have just never been able to get into Edge.

But you have to make it clear that the heel can get it done if they have to.

Honestly, they're relatively equal in terms of working ability. Christian did make some strides in his recent run with Jericho, similar to Edge's in his series with Angle and Guererro. It essentially comes down to the fact that *to me*, Edge has some sort of negative charisma where I find it hard to get behind him and really get into his matches. Hopefully the impending heel change will breathe life into his character. Christian on the other hand, is consistently entertaining, and has rebounded from his being buried (remember his losing streak and tantrum throwing days?) quite nicely. While I'm not sure he'll ever be a main eventer, I'm sure he'll be a consistent mid-upper mid card heel.

(at this point, it'd be somewhere around October or November, assuming Benoit still has the belt then.)

It should be obvious to anybody who has a pair of eyes, that Christian is a better wrestler, and entertainer, then Edge.

I think each is strong where the other is weak, which is why they had great success as a tag team and have had spotty records as singles stars.

Firstly, lets have a look at some of the matches these guys have been in as of late. Sure, Edge has put on some great matches that deserve applause, but compared to what Christian has done in his matches, Edge is nothing.

While they were overrated, Edge had matches with Eddy Guerrero and Kurt Angle that blow away anything Christian has done as a singles wrestler.

Christian's feud with Chris Jericho is arguably the best feud the wwe has had in a very long time.

It's been weird. It started out very strongly and turned into just another WWE feud, when it had the potential to be fucking great. I think the problems started when Trish overheard Jericho bragging to Christian about the bet. I don't think that was necessarily a bad development in the story, but it came too soon. Then, the direction of the story became so sappy and it's like they realized that doing the right thing -- Jericho and Trish uniting and kissing mid-ring at Wrestlemania -- would have left them with absolutely nothing afterward so they had to do the turn to bail themselves out. The angle should have ended at Backlash with Jericho going over convincingly, but continued on. Jericho should be in the World title picture right now and Christian should be feuding with Shawn Michaels.

The matches both men endured were purely spectacular. Both Christian, and Jericho, stole the show at the 2 pay per views they have had matches in, and one of those pay per views, was none other than WrestleMania XX. To steal the show at an event like WMXX, shows how great the 2 athletes are, and to me it really showed that both men could pull off great matches at any level, with just about anybody.

Jericho v Christian was simply the best non-world title match on the show, and even that is up for debate, as some preferred the Rock & Sock 6-man.

The other occasion when they stole the show at a pay per view, was Backlash. Christians match at Backlash was arguable the best match on the card after the night was over, and that's pretty hard to do when you have matches like Randy Orton vs Mick Foley, and the triple threat match for the heavyweight championship of the world.

Again, the highest accomplishment they could boast at Backlash was having the third best match on the show.

For 2 wrestlers who have been shoved in the mid-card and put at the start of the show to shine through like that, further proves my point that Christian can put on spectacular matches with just about anybody.

Then why hasn't he?

What has Edge done in the past month while he has been back? Nothing! Sure, he captured the tag team gold, but the matches he was in were mediocre at best. His match with Kane at Backlash was arguably the worst match of the show and only pushed down Kane who should have been winning every match leading into this current feud for the world title.

Edge v Kane was a bad idea, because neither guy could afford to lose. Edge has admittedly seen brighter days.

Edge's more recent matches with Chris Benoit and evolution, have been good, but nowhere near as good as Christian's have been. The best match Edge has put on since his return, has been his match against Randy Orton. Sure that match was great, but look at the match Christian was in on that same show. Christian and Jericho put on one of the best cage matches in quite some time now, and once again, stole the show with their brilliance.

I agree that the cage match was the match of the night, and I'd even say it's been severely underrated by most, but winning MOTN honors when Orton and Edge had a subpar match isn't a major accomplishment. It's just a sad indictment for everything else.

Not many people can manage to put on as many great matches with the same wrestler, but Christian did this very successfully.

No, typically, the best matches happen when two wrestlers feud over time.

Edge has been having constant matches with Evolution, and even with there being 4 members of Evolution, they are still turning out boring and a chore to watch. Now, if someone can put on this many great wrestling matches with the same guy without them getting boring, then he is clearly one of the best wrestlers this company has, thus making Christian clearly ahead of Edge for in-ring chemistry, and natural wrestling ability.

'In-ring chemistry' is something two wrestlers have together, not something one wrestler has on his own. I'd say they're about even as workers overall, with Edge having better offense and Christian being a better seller.

With that said, can you say that Edge is a better wrestler than Christian? Of course not.

I probably could if I wanted to, but I don't.

Secondly, it is clearly obvious that Christian has much better mic skills than Edge. Every promo Christian has had so far this year, has been close to perfect. He never makes mistakes, and gets huge ammounts of heel heat. I haven't seen a single promo from Christian where he hasn't gotten huge heat from the crowd, and where he hasn't been perfect with the way he talks, and with the way he maintains his gimmick. Edge on the other hand, is mediocre at best when it comes to mic skills. This is something that will hold him down alot when it comes to being pushed to bigger and better things. If he ever wants to be the world champion, then he seriously needs to improve his mic skills. Edge is, and will always only be given promo's on occasion when it is desperately needed. I expect his opponents to carry almost all of the mic work when it comes down to a feud with anyone. With that said, can you really say that Edge is a better entertainer than Christian? Of course not.

Christian outshines Edge on the mic. I won't disagree.

Finally, with Edge being sidelined for the better part of last year, he has lost almost all of what wrestling skill he originally had. He used to be a much better wrestler, but even back then, he was still nothing compared to Christian. Christian has been incredibly good for the better part of his time as a wwe wrestler and he continues to improve his already spectacular skills. Edge, on the other hand, is nothing of his former self and this shows in his matches. Even in the past when he was better, that was only when he had Christian as a tag team partner. Christian carried him through their years as a tag team and this has shown in both men's accomplishments as wrestlers. Edge continues to be stuck in the tag team divisions, whereas Christian continues to impress and continues to be put into very high profile singles feuds.

This is bordering on propaganda.

Might I suggest walking through the Edge/Jericho cage match from Smackdown in July of 2002, then walking through the Jericho/Christian match from RAW recently and comparing the two sequence by sequence. You're more likely to make your point.

:)

To conclude, Christian is clearly a better wrestler and entertainer than Edge, simply because Christian has much more pure wrestling ability, can put on countless numbers of matches with anybody without making them boring, and Christian obviously has much better mic skills and charisma then Edge.

Nice attempt at a three-point persuasive essay, and I won't say I disagree with you, but there are major flaws here.

1. What is 'pure wrestling ability'? Neither is specifically strong on the mat, if that's what you're implying. Is it moveset? If so, Edge has the clear advantage. Is it something else entirely? Explain yourself.

2. Feuds usually produce better matches than one-time meetings. Look at your favorite matches and you'll probably see my point. This doesn't make Christian unique, it makes him a normal worker.

3. The last is definitely an arguable point.

Because Benoit and Bret were MASTERS on the mic. That doesn't have to mean much.

Bret was actually great on the mic, far better than anyone currently in WWE except for maybe Rock and Jericho. He wasn't a catchphrase machine, but in terms of conveying emotion, explaining his actions and hyping a match without sacrificing realism or credibility, Bret smoked most.

I don't know that anyone currently in WWE could have made the Hart Foundation angle work. Bret's range of emotion, rage and heartbreak, is what made it a success.

It should also be noted that E & C, even as a tag team, weren't 'great on the mic', they were merely really funny. Brian Gewertz has taken a lot of blame for Edge's current lackluster speaking skills, because there was never a point when he was taught to do a serious promo.

Let's breakdown this "pure wrestling ability" that Christian supposedly has.

1) Matwork- Does none, has shown no skills for such aspect. Headlocks do not count.

2) High flying- The occasional death bump to the floor also doesn't count.

3) Selling- Does well at this, though he tends to be spotty at times.

4) Striking- Does Christian even throw punches or kicks or anything resembling a strike?

5) Impact of moves- The Unprettier needs to go. Badly. It takes too long to set up and after being a finisher for a long time it still isn't nearly as over as it should be. Ditto for the reverse DDT variations. The addition of the reverse tornado and the texas cloverleaf are helping him but he really needs a new finisher.

6) Submissions- The Texas Cloverleaf works fine, though he only recently added it.

7) Power moves- Yeah, right.

The dude needs more then a bit of improvement before I'd consider him to be anything resembling a "pure wrestler".

Christian actually used a great powerslam at Unforgiven 2001 against Edge, and I wish he'd find a way to keep it in his arsenal. It looked great.

yep, christian has often been labelled a "great worker" in net circles and every time i heard that i'd just say "wtf" .because for a "great worker" i dont think i could name more than 2 great singles matches hes actually been in!

i must admit though, the whole jericho feud has really brought him into his own, charactor wise, and he has been looking better than i have ever seen him..i still dont rate him too highly in the ring, but as a personality he's doing great right now...

i'd be inclined to say edge is the better worker but as many have already mentioned, hes spent the entire last 2 years in feuds with people like benoit, eddy and angle and that makes it hard to judge...

until one shows me soemthing really extra special, i'd have to rate them about equal right now..
