With Spidey's top single day and second weekend records having already fallen to "Shrek 2," ComingSoon.net reports that the third "Harry Potter" also has broken Spidey's opening day record...

 

Warner Bros. Pictures' Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban broke the opening day record set by Spider-Man on May 3, 2002. The third installment in the popular "Harry Potter" franchise pulled in an estimated $41.2 million from 3,855 theaters on Friday, surpassing Spidey's take of $39.4 million from 3,615 theaters. It is also on its way to beat Spidey's opening weekend figure of $114.8 million. "Prisoner of Azkaban" carried a production budget of $130 million.

Thats freckin nuts. Its pretty crazy what movies are making these days. It just makes me wonder just how much Spider-Man 2 will rake in the first day.

I was iffy about someone else taking over from Chris Columbus as director, but it seems as though Alfonso Cuaron did a damn good job.

 

The first film opened pretty big, so did this one moreso, but what about the second one? Did it have a huge opening gross?

It has an 89% rating at rotten tomatoes and many people are calling it one of the best films of the year.

 

Shrek 2 was so far below Harry Potter in terms of quality it's not even funny.

 

The plot of Shrek 2 was the one thing I hated about Shrek 1 (Waaaah Fiona may not like me boo-hoo) and the fact that Shrek 2 never made you attempt to care about the characters made me bored throughout most of the movie. At times the movie was very very funny but it just didnt try to be funny enough.

 

Whereseas like Harry Potter which scared the crap out of me and is so well done that it had me caring for the welfare of the characters which Shrek 2 was incapable of doing. I left the theatre out of breath. Harry Potter was also smart in that whenever the movie got a bit too scary they made sure to inject some humour into it and lighten the mood just a bit.

 

The fact that Shrek 2 is making all this money is kind of sad since it is very far below the level of the first one.

Considering he's one of the producers and Harry Potter 1 and 2 both opened to 85+ levels- I don't think he's too upset.

Columbus was getting burnt out, so it was his choice to not direct the third one. I just saw this movie, and it was good. The new director added a lot more darkness, which I think is what the third book contained more of. The actors are begininning to show their age, as all the boy's voices have deepen, and the blond hair kid is now taller than everyone. But, a good job. I liked it, definately worth checking out if you read and loved the books, or if you liked the first two. There were some nice twists here and there, and I thought that the new director was a good choice.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is the third highest grossing film of all time. Columbus has nothing to be ashamed of. This one had the advantage of being based off of a better book, and being released in the summer.

Yea- I admit it. I was scared for much of the movie. It was very dark and I have no idea how it got a PG rating.

 

And the first Harry Potter is not the third highest grossing film of all time. Internationally may be but def not domestic

Potter 3 rocked ass. It deserves to be a huge moneymaker...but I think adjustments to movie prices need to be made so that "record breaking" actually matters.

Yea- I admit it. I was scared for much of the movie. It was very dark and I have no idea how it got a PG rating.

It was dark, but think about the content - a little bit of fantasy violence, no profanity, no sex. Scary stuff, yeah, but that's the rating to go with. No shame in being a bit freaked out, though. The dementors were handled really well and would have fit well into any sci-fi/horror movie. Great touches with everything getting icy, too. The little kids in the theater I was in were flipping out.

Spiderman 2 shall break Potter's new record. More theaters, more screens. It is bound to happen. Theater records will continue to be broken, for multiple reasons.
