One thing I admire about America....

Recommended Posts

As some people may or not be aware, there is the third biggest sporting event in the world taking place next week(Euro 2004), and one thing that a competition like this does(along with the World Cup) is sort of bring people together, I know it sounds twee, but it generally does, now I was listening to a radio phone in today because I was bored, and there was some nobhead on there, saying that we shouldnt fly the flag of St.George because it is racist(it reminds people of slavery and the colonies and all the black repression), he even said that it should be changed! The thing I admire about American's is that they are geniunly proud of their country and will fly their flag and be proud of it, why do we have to be ashamed of our flag over here, and have lefty liberals tell us its a sign of repression?

You really need to read American media more often.

And I thought you were going to talk about the e-mail I just sent you... :(

Is that true? Because that is the honest impression you get, that the flag is hoisted around proudly, oh and re: that email KKK is god, and I apologise for sending shit to his email account.

Well, in a country of 300 million there are a LOT of people here that are just as bad as your loons over there.

I just heard a few days ago that the ACLU made the LA County take down some stupid ass tiny cross on it seal. I mean, Jesus Christ (pun intended), I don't like religious freaks, but this is even worse, imo...

Yeah, thats a perfectly fair comment, theres no way in hell you can generalise 300 million people and I apologise for it

I remember there being a scandal here in Massachusetts, at Harvard, where a southern student had hung the confederate flag so that it was visible through their window ... all it took was one person to complain about how racist it was, and how much it bothered them, and next thing you know the flag was demanded to be brought down.

Of course Harvard is in the People's Republic of Cambridge, so normal US laws don't apply.

The ACLU won't let a confederate flag fly ANYWHERE that it might be seen. Nevermind that maybe the guy with it had a great grandfather that served in the CS army or something. Nope.

For the record, no, I'm not one, but I get real damn sick of the Green Party on my campus threatening people that have one in their dorm rooms.

The ACLU once fought to desegrate public schools. Now they fight for murderers, pedophiles, racists, and terrorists.

I see where you are coming from Barron. Americans generally seem patriotic and are proud of their flag. I think the main problem with the English flag is that it has been "hijacked" by facist groups.

As much as I dislike rapists, murderers and pedophiles they have rights too. Which is a good thing as if scum has rights, so do I.

On the other hand: Freedom of speech shouldn't be restricted on the grounds of "it's offensive." I'd let the confederate fly if .. I was in any way southener or really cared for it. Sod all who dislike it, I have the constitutionally guranteed right to be as insensitive as I want to.

The fact that it's such a tiny thing makes the people who get upset at the ACLU over it as petty as they claim the ACLU is for wanting it gone.

Nah. People want the ACLU gone regardless. This is just more fuel to the fire.

Did you not pay attention to why they wanted it gone? The cross is supposedly a symbol of "the influence of the church and the missions of California."

And they ignore that CA was started as RELIGIOUS MISSIONS for the most part. Kinda hard to ignore, you know, THE HISTORY of the state.

Again, they mistake "seperation of church and state" for "no religion whatsoever in anything remotely state-related".

This will seem callous but:

Boohoohoo poor oppressed peoples of California, labouring under this religious monopolism on .. whatever.

California's city names sound mostly Spanish to me. And by god the Spaniards were as Catholic as it gets (well, maybe not as Catholic as the Italians.) It's like changing Santa Cruz into Santa Religious Symbol.

Who was hurt by this little cross? I mean .. seriously, who bawled their eyes out at night because they had to gaze upon a cross? That's the history of this place and unless I'm mistaken you're not required to kiss the coin and pray at least once day, under the penalty of death.

I like the ACLU, I found their booklet on "what to do when you're being arrested" to be rather helpful. But I can't get friendly with the idea that we all must conform and tone down as to not offend anyone.

Does Argentina cry for me when College Feminist X or Eric Idle mock "the great white males" ? I think not and I wouldn't want it to either. People need to grow a thicker skin.

No it's not.

Problem is the ACLU does stupid shit like this all the time -- I heard that at one time they wanted La Cruces' (sp?) name changed.

Isn't there better things for them to worry about, like *insert dramatic music* THE PATRIOT ACT?...

Well I can understand them wanting that tiny cross out of there I mean...

OMG~!

That's the Roman Goddess Pomona! How DARE Los Angeles county try to parade the religious beliefs of Roman pagans on our secular society? Didn't they read the " Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion" part of the First Amendment?! This is an OUTRAGE~!

Nobody of any other religion contributed anything?

Early on?

Nope.

Catholic missions were basically it.

It'd be like asking Utah to dissociate itself with any mention of the Mormon Church.

The confederate flag is the symbol of a group that commited treason against the United States of America. Personally I think it should be banned completely.

The absolute right of the people to unilaterally dissolve all powers of the federal government is clearly stated in Virginia's ratification of the Constitution.

Virginia wasn't the only state fighting for the confederates in the civil war.

Probably true.

However, it does disprove your notion that the entire group committed treason.

Regardless of whether or not we are dealing with treason in the technical sense (although I would certainly say it's a better use of the word than the way Ann Coulter applies it), I don't see why people would want to honour a flag that represents an army that fought against the United States of America. I particularly don't get why Republicans defend it when Abraham Lincoln was the president of the USA at the time.

While we're banning flags, let's ban the American flag, since it represents a group of people committing treason against the United Kingdom. Sure, we're not run by the UK now, but they're still a strong ally, so we should honor them, right?

Hey, while we're at banning flags of nations/groups of people that have done wrong to us, why not ban the German, Japanese, Russian, and Mexican flags as well? I mean, sure, none of them committed treason against us, but quite a few of them did declare war on us, and the Russians were the enemies of the US for 50 years.

The reason the Confederate flag isn't banned is because that would be a First Amendment issue. If somebody were to display a Confederate flag, be it because they believe in Southern freedom or have a great deal of Southern pride, let them. Government cannot pass a law denying the right of free speech and expression, right?

Also, I'm not so sure if I'd consider the Confederates to be guilty of treason. Does it not state in the US Constitution that the people have the right to revolt if they feel the government is not doing its job?

I understand why it should be okay to have a Confederate flag and all, but part of me just feels icky about supporting that notion. Anyhow, I guess if you're a Southerner who takes a lot of pride in your heritage, then I guess it's permissible, but quite frankly, I don't know why I see so many Confederate flags in WISCONSIN. Those are just racist and ignorant jerks taking advantage of freedom of expression.
