alfdogg 0 Report post Posted June 12, 2004 I was reading yesterday's Indianapolis Star when I came across this comment from Charles Oakley, regarding Larry Bird's comments about white superstars. "I respect Larry, and he's right. He's got a lot of white stiffs on his team right now that aren't doing much." That was just a random quote, so I don't know if he was talking about the Pacers or the Celtics, but that's irrelevant. The fact is those "white stiffs" are, you know, IN the league, unlike Oakley who was cut from a borderline playoff team. Discuss.
2GOLD 0 Report post Posted June 12, 2004 Oak in his prime was a good enough player, he's getting up in the years now though and when you lose a step as a rebounder you are just not going to be on the high list of players anymore. But if he is commenting on a line from Bird, then I don't see the problem. Oak is an old man and he could still probably outplay lots of the young talentless hacks in the league right now. If these kids are so untalented, why hasn't some team figured it out and exploited the advantage?

If these kids are so untalented, why hasn't some team figured it out and exploited the advantage? Basically his age and attitude. Oak has become a very bitter old man and he can't play the minutes he used to be able to play. He can still outrebound plenty of them but no coach wants anything to do with him anymore. He's not the most liked guy in the NBA.
Steviekick 0 Report post Posted June 13, 2004 He was retired, and Jeff Van Gundy wanted to bring him back to try to motivate the Rockets to be a lot toughter and physical in their playing. They didn't necessarily want him their for the playoffs, but moreso to just help out in prepping for them. If you looked at their series against the Lakes, they definitely showed why JVG thought they needed to toughen up.
