geniusMoment 0 Report post Posted June 19, 2004 In the 9th Graves walked the leadoff hitter with a 1 run lead on 4 pitches. Sanders swings at the first pitch he sees, which was a ball, the next pitch is a ball. The next pitch is a hanging slider, which Reggie misses and Renteria is thrown out trying to steal. Sanders then swings at a ball in the dirt and pops out. So far in the inning, 8 pitches 7 of which would have been balls. But there are two out and no one on, you figure Graves at least has a shot, no this is Graves. The first two pitches to the next batter both balls. He then hangs a sinker which Anderson smacks for a hit. Lankford comes up, the first two pitches, both balls. Lankford then hits a 85 mph fastball and gets a double. That is pathetic, an absolute embarassment, a poor excuse for a pitcher. Womack then gets a luck hit, he would have beaten it out without the bobble and the game is tied. Another blown save by Graves, that is 3 blown saves in his last 4 chances. 85 mph fastballs and hanging sinkers suck, you suck Graves.
Guest Anglesault Report post Posted June 19, 2004 So, what are the Red Sox doing?
KingPK 0 Report post Posted June 19, 2004 Lowe apparently passed the suck bug to Wakefield. But Ortiz and Manny just went back-to-back, so it's 7-5 Giants. The Giants aren't shying away from playing small ball at all. They're taking those walks Wake is piling up and are making runs out of them.

Bruiser Chong 0 Report post Posted June 19, 2004 And Ock, I agree completely about the MLB team pages. The people on those boards makes everyone here look like brilliant. Bruiser, that's one of your best posts ever I was wondering if anyone would notice. And what's with Vasquez? Two wild pitches, a double and an error. One of the few times I need the Yanks to win and this goes down. Fantastic.

Guest FrigidSoul Report post Posted June 19, 2004 There's absolutely no pitching in this game. The Red Sox are getting extra batting practice in tonight while the Giants can only wonder why 9 runs isn't enough.

Guest FrigidSoul Report post Posted June 19, 2004 After checking the digital guide the Fox game of the week is Red Sox and Giants. Probably because its Pedro vs Bonds. I hate the Fox broadcast team. They're horrid.
Bruiser Chong 0 Report post Posted June 19, 2004 Don't look now, but the D-Rays have won nine straight, are only four games under .500 and are... 8 1/2 games behind the Sox. Oh well. No one expects them to even finish anywhere but last place, but they're really looking solid the last couple of weeks, after going the first part of the season without being able to grab back-to-back wins. MarvinisaLunatic 0 Report post Posted June 19, 2004 Want some statistical proof as to how bad Sidney Ponson has been pitching this year? 120 hits in 87.1 IP 64 ER 6.60 ERA 3-9 It was brought to my attention on an O's forum that Ponson is on pace to allow 314 hits in 228 IP. They also posted this list of the pitchers in the last 50 years that allowed the most hits in 200 + Innings (all time records go back to the 1890's and are in the high 300's): HITS YEAR H IP 1 Tommy John 1983 287 234.2 2 Jim Barr 1977 286 234.1 3 Rick Mahler 1986 283 237.2 4 Rick Mahler 1988 279 249 5 Billy Hoeft 1956 276 248 6 Geoff Zahn 1980 273 232.2 7 Mike Torrez 1978 272 250 T8 Tanyon Sturtze 2002 271 224 T8 Bob Friend 1961 271 236 T10 Ray Burris 1977 270 221 Granted, I seriously doubt Ponson will be allowed to remain a starter if he stays on that pace (and on pace for 21 losses) but just the thought of a pitcher being on pace for 300+ hits in 220 IP drives me nuts. Not all of this can be brought on Ponson, as a lot of times the defense that was supposedly going to be great has just sputtered, allowing for extra at bats and usually the Orioles Pitchers seem to get burned by that (a lot). But the main problem for the Orioles Starters other than Ponson hasn't been the # of hits allowed, its been the # of walks allowed, which is more of a sign of their lack of experience than anything. In the offseason when I heard that they resigned him I was happy although in retrospect I should have been tossing stuff at the TV when he had the press conference. 3 Years 22 million..not the worst contract that the Orioles ever agreed to, but the fact that he is now 3-9 and lost 6 straight starts, it stinks. This was the guy that was expected to at least be the veteran (as much of a veteran as he is) leadership for the rest of the pitchers and the team as well. But instead he shows up god knows how many pounds overweight and pitches like crap. In the situation the Orioles are in (last place now that the Devil Rays are suddenly red-hot) and it looking like they'll have another crappy year, they might as well put him in the bullpen and bring up someone and let them have a go at it instead of continually letting Ponson pitch like the hitters are hitting off a tee. Guest Anglesault Report post Posted June 19, 2004 But instead he shows up god knows how many pounds overweight and pitches like crap. Correction. He showed up looking like Sidney Ponson and pitching like Sidney Ponson. I still have no idea why people got all excited when he was signed again with the O's. 2003 season aside, it was still Sidney effing Ponson.
Guest FrigidSoul Report post Posted June 19, 2004 His problem is he doesn't respect the ability he was born with or the game enough to come in at playing shape. He's supposedly 25lbs heavier than what he was last season and had gained 10lbs already by the time the Orioles signed him to the 3 year deal. If he plays at a good weight then he can control his fastball more. Its like Bartolo Colon, the fatter he gets the harder he throws but with it he loses command. I still have no idea why people got all excited when he was signed again with the O's. 2003 season aside, it was still Sidney effing Ponson. True that he really has never been anything special but hes also been at least fairly respectable and people were at least hoping that he would be able to come close to last year, but its not even close. As far as the weight is concerned, I feel thats probably his #1 problem but at this point simply losing the extra weight (which wont happen overnight) won't fix his problems. HOPEFULY they'll put him on some sort of training/diet in the offseason and get him to lose some of that weight and he'll at least be back to normal instead of this horrible season. EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted June 19, 2004 Marvin, the problem with that analysis is that there is increasing evidence that pitchers have less control over hits allowed than we once thought. Ponson's been one of baseball's unluckiest pitchers so far this season in that regard.
Fuzzy Dunlop 0 Report post Posted June 19, 2004 I liked AS better before. Hating the Yankees as much as I do, it was always so much fun to see him get all worked up. Bored 0 Report post Posted June 19, 2004 Yup. I actually can't blame Macha this time as Mulder had thrown 123 pitches and they needed to try to score another run in the 9th so pinch hitting him was the only option. The bullpen is just pathetic all the way around. Beane is also completely handucuffed because he can't release Mecir and/or Rincon, who are both just useless at this point, because ownership won't eat their salaries and Beane can't make a deal for a reliever because there is no open spot on the roster. So frustrating because the division looks right their for the A's to take but the bullpen is holding them back. I have to think they've cost them at least 10 wins this season. All bullpens blow games but only the Indians are worse.
Spaceman Spiff 0 Report post Posted June 19, 2004 The Phillies should make Polanco their utility infielder and have Utley start at second Better yet, play both Polanco AND Utley, and bench either Rollins or Bell. And as Pinjockey said, heaven forbid they cut Doug Glanville. You can't find a .500 OPS just anywhere. Does Utley have the arm to play 3rd? I don't see any reason to sit down or trade Bell at this point (at least not without getting a 3rd baseman in return). CF is the position they need to address. Byrd's been atrocious all season. Went to my first game at Citizen's Bank last night. Beautiful stadium.
the pinjockey 0 Report post Posted June 19, 2004 Wasn't he worse defensively at third than second? CBP is nice. I am going tomorrow. Kind of disappointed though, as I was hoping to see Grienke, but he goes tonight. Instead I get the classic Dannys Reyes - Brian Powell matchup tomorrow.
