The jinx is in!

Recommended Posts

So my team is getting jinxed. Damn. No seriously has anybody picked up the College Football preview that's out now?

In it the writer says something to the degree of "Oh well OU is the best team I've checked out in the preseason in the past 8 years. I have them ranked #1 and i think they'll dominate there conference and title game and then easily win the national title. Oh by the way when all is said and done I think everyone will be saying they're the greatest college football team of all time!"

Now that's all well and good sir. I'm glad you feel that way about my team but......ARE YOU TRYING TO JINX US!?

God damn. Everyone started saying that last year(even me) and they got whipped by 28 points in there conference title game! God! I now expect them to get shut out by Houston at the start of the season! Or Bowling Green! Hell they may even get shut out by Baylor!

Anyways.....anyone seen the preview? Anyone believe in jinx's and has had your team praised like that only to see them fail immediately? Share your jinx stories!

The Mid Majors are considered minor league teams but the NCAA when it comes to football, so yes they will be.

Also, OU is the best team in the Big 12 and possibly is the best team in College Football on paper. That's not a jinx, that's just fact. How they translate onto the field remains to be seen. But the guy can't lie and say "well, they look ok and might stand a chance" when that's not the truth.

I'm curious where Tennessee will stand in a preview for what will be a rebuilding year. I'll be pretty happy with a Cotton Bowl bid this season. I'm pulling for them to win it all of course, but out of the SEC (once again, YOUR National Champion will come from tha dirrty south) I see either Georgia or LSU.

I guess this topic is as good as any to plug that I'm going to be putting together a college football pick 'em contest for the entire season instead of just the bowls. And yes there will be a prize for the winner. I'll post details when the season gets closer.

USC vs Florida

Texas vs Tennessee for the rights to wear orange and the use of T

Michigan vs LSU

OU vs Alabama

FSU vs THE Ohio State

Miami vs Nebraska

Teams to be ignored because they all have 1 or 2 loses against teams they should of beaten from smaller conferences: Washington, Kansas State, Colorado, Georgia, Michigan State.

Well I know they are that good. I'm there biggest fan on this board. I go to there freaking school and play another sport for the same school. But I just don't like it when people start spouting off "best team ever" until all is said and done. I made the mistake of saying it last year and look what happened! I know how good they are and I personally do feel they should be #1 in every poll again. But I don't want anyone saying "best team ever" until they finish the season and there stats and performance are better than 1995 Nebraska.

And I don't actually have the preview. It was read to me over the radio. But I'm going to go to the mall tonight and see if I can grab it.

OU vs. Alabama? In what?

I don't know what Alabama will be worth and most people I've heard are picking the Orange Bowl to be OU vs. USC. Though personally I'm pulling for OU vs. Miami.

In a bowl game presented to you by Papa John's Pizza and Coke.

Are you serious with your predictions?

No way Florida makes it to the title game.

Texas won't be anywhere near a BCS bowl. But they may be able to play Tennessee in a lesser bowl.

Alabama won't make it to the BCS where Oklahoma will assuredly be sitting no matter what.

And Nebraska will probably get nowhere near the BCS while Miami will most definetly be there.

Here's how I shape up the national title race

USC: Should be able to run through the schedule undefeated. They'll beat VT in August and get the second best team in the Pac-10 Cal at home.

Oklahoma: Barring any unforseen circumstances (i.e. last year's Big XII title game), they should also be able to run through their schedule undefeated and get to the Orange Bowl. The game against KSU up in Manhattan could be tough, but OU has the edge due to KSU having to break in new talent.

Georgia: Tons of talent, but the schedule is killer. They get LSU in Athens, but have to figure out how to beat Florida and also win what will probably be a tough game at Auburn and the SEC title game, most likely a rematch with LSU.

LSU: Great defense and running game, but losing Mauck's experience is going to hurt them. Factor in an extremely tough SEC schedule (going to Georgia and Florida) and LSU probably won't win the national title again this year, but are a good possibility for a BCS bowl.

Florida State/Miami: Whoever wins the first game has a shot at the Orange Bowl, but each has to deal with problems after that game too. Miami not going to have those breather games like they had in the Big East in the ACC. A potential landmine game for the Hurricanes will be in up in Charlottesville against Virginia. They also have what I believe is a HUGE question mark at QB with Berlin. Florida State has to worry about many new defensive starters and the usual Chris Rix fuckups that will happen during the season.

Ohio State/Michigan: Both have to break in new QBs and other starters. Both could be monsters in 2005 when OSU's Justin Zwick and Michigan's Matt Guiterrez get the experience they need.

With that, here are my BCS bowl projections:

Orange: USC(Pac-10 winner) vs. Oklahoma(Big 12 winner)

Sugar: Georgia(SEC winner) vs. Florida State(ACC winner)

Fiesta: West Virginia(Big East winner) vs. LSU(At-large)

Rose: Ohio State(Big 10 winner) vs. Cal(At-large, this team will suprise this year)

Mid-major BCS possibility: Utah - Urban Meyer has something very special going with the Utes. He will be the next coach to be hired by a big time program.

I don't think the KSU game will be tough for the simple fact that OU has a history of coming back the next year and destroying the teams that beat them. At least recently. Look what they did to OSU and A&M this year!

The game that worries me for OU is the OSU game. They've proven it's tough to win in Stillwater. Then again without Josh Fields and Rashaun Woods.....

What coaches does every think are in danger of being fired after this year? I'll throw some in to start:

Mack Brown(Texas): If they somehow beat OU this year, Brown is off the hot seat for another year. Another 65 points scored on the Longhorns may mean that Brown could be out of Austin.

John Bunting(UNC): 2 and 3 win seasons won't be tolerated most likely by the UNC people.

Ron Zook(Florida): Extremely unfortunate, since most UF fans still clamor for Spurrier. If Zook can beat Tennessee and keep the streak over Georgia going, the Gators should be able to get to the SEC title game, which should buy Zook another year.

Well I know if Bob Stoops doesn't win the National Title all the bandwagoners in Oklahoma will be screaming for his firing. That pisses me off so much. He's one of the if not THE best coach in college football. He has 4 years where he doesn't win a national title and people call for his firing.

I wasn't around at the time but I wonder if people went crazy and wanted Barry Switzer fired when he didn't win.

He's been coaching in Oklahoma for 5 years and has never had a losing season. He's only lost like 2 games at home in those 5 years. Get over it bandwagoners. He's a good coach.

Anyways I think Mack Brown would be fired...he will never beat Oklahoma....never.

My picks are from a casual fan perspective as you can see it is just a random draw of the "big name" schools which has the potential to get the big ratings and money.

Come on did anybody seriously think that LSU had a chance to be National Champion at the begining of the season?

Michigan looks real deep this yr, I was at the spring scrimmage, and I will say this Gutieriez has way more mobility which can add a new element to our offense this season. I would be shocked if Michigan lost more than two games this season.

Anyone have any news on Mike Williams appeal process?

I have a feeling Georgia (Green, and Pollack) will be on the cover of the SI CFB preview addition.

The Gophers might have their best team in 40 years. New QB in Culpito, but the O-Line is outstanding, and the running game is the best in the country. The D's very talented, and if they can play up to their potential. A Big 10 championship isn't out of the picture. At least making a New Year's Day Bowl would be nice.

Ok guys I picked it up. Phil Steele's College Football Preview vol. 10.

They have several different regional covers. They have an ACC, Pac 10, Big 10, Big XII, SEC, Alabama/Auburn, Texas, Florida, and National covers.

I got the National Cover which features the Orange Bowl Logo in the middle of the cover and says "Who will be #1?" and around the logo are Matt Leinhart of USC, Jason White of Oklahoma, and Corey Webster of LSU.

Alright here's the deal. If you want to know what he says about your team ask me. And I will type up his final thoughts. I'm not going to give you the full page read where he tells you about the QB's, O-Line, and so on. But I'll give you his final thoughts.

Here's Phil's Forecast for Oklahoma:

In 2000 Oklahoma did not have a single starter miss a single game due to injury and benefited from +7 in turnovers. They stunned the nation by winning the National Title despite not being ranked in the Preseason Top 20. Oklahoma actually went 6-2 in conf play in both 2001 and 2002 not even getting to the Big 12 Title Game. After the regular season last year, there was talk about whether Oklahoma belonged among the NCAA's best ever. They simply destroyed foes and in Big 12 play outscored foes by an amazing average score of 51.5-11.3 and outgained them by 266.6 ypg!!! There was talk prior to the Big 12 title game that they could lose and still get to the National Title game. As a result the Sooners came out a little flat and were crushed by Kansas St. They then were beaten in the Sugar Bowl by LSU for a stunning 12-2 finish. When I look at this year's Sooner team my first reaction is WOW! This is the 10th edition of my preseason magazine and the Sooners are clearly the best team I have analyzed heading into the preseason. They have 17 starters back including Heisman Trophy winner Jason White and rank in the Top 20 in all 8 position categories. Showing there dominace, OU has an amazing 11 players on my 1st team All Big 12 squad. While the Sooners have had their slip ups in the past years, this year they could easily go 11-0 and then win the Big 12 Title Game solidly. I see the Sooners not only getting to but winning the Orange Bowl and bringing home Stoops' second National Title.

And under his preseason Top 40 he ranks Oklahoma #1 and says

Last year the Sooners were being called the greatest team of all-time in college football after a dominating 12-0 regular season but came up short in the postseason. Only one team in the country ranks in my Top 25 in all 8 positiong categories and that is the Sooners. This is the 10th year of my college football preview magazine and this Oklahoma team is is the most talented team I have evaluated in the preseason in that span. They have 17 starters back including the 2003 Heisman Trophy winner. They have my #1 rated offense and my #2 rated defense this year and if they maintain fairly good health will be at least a TD favorite in every one of their games. The Sooners last won a National Title at the Orange Bowl and hope to return there this season. I will call for the Sooners to go undefeated and possibly be the greatest team ever in College Football.

I know that he's just giving his honest opinion....but damn I'm afraid he may jinx us.

I'm curious where Tennessee will stand in a preview for what will be a rebuilding year.

Tennessee:

It's interesting to see how Tennessee fans view their program since Phil Fulmer won them a National Title in 1998. You would think the Vols have had two straight horrendous seasons the last two years based on the amount of pressure Fulmer is under. It's true, in their last two bowls they have been noncompetitive getting blown out by both Maryland and Clemson. Tennessee has not been as dominant as their National Title team but has now been to 15 straight bowl games, a school record and the longest streak in the SEC. They did have a streak of 7 straight Jan 1 bowl games snapped in 2002. Over their last nine years the Vols are 59-16 in conference play(best in SEC). Last season they tied for first in the SEC East and finished regular season #6 in the AP poll and still did not get a BCS game. They ended Miami's 26 game home win streak, but somehow fell all the way down to the SEC's #5 bowl. Last year they had to replace 8 NFL DC's which tied Miami for the most and had just 11 starters back. This year they have just 9 straters back. On defense they lose 4 of their top 6 tacklers, while on offense, QB Clausen must be replaced. The difference between Tennsessee appearing in the SEC title game and finishing #5 in the bowl slot was probably one play against Georgia. This Vol team, despite only 9 starters back, could be on of the surprise teams in the country as most of their SEC road games are winnable and they have 7 home games. The key could be Oct 9th on the road vs. an extremely loaded Georgia team. Despite this clearly being a rebuilding year fo the Vols, I feel they've underachieved the last two season and they have 14 player on my all-conf team which is the most in the league. There is a possibility they could be favored in 10 of their 11 games this year and should ahve a better season than most people will forecast.

Damaramu, can I ask what - if anything - the preview says about the CSU Rams? I'm thinking it'll be an off-year, what with Van Pelt graduating and all, but I've thought that in the past only to be pleasantly surprised.

CSU Rams:

Sonny Lubick has recorded ten straight winning seasons which is the sixth best of current coaches. In the 100 years of football here, prior to his arrival, CS won or shared 9 conference titles. Lubick has rattled off six in the past 10 years, 2nd in the NCAA to Florida St. In 200 they finished #14 in the polls, their highest finish ever in a 10-2 season. In 2002 they appeared poised to top that total but lost their last two including the bowl. The team has now won at least 7 games for 10 straight years. Last year they had 15 starters inlcuding super AB Bradlee Van Pelt and only lost 13 lettermen. Coming off a 10-4 season, they suprisingly went just 7-6. They neede to win their last two games just to make it to a bowl. They did have a tough loss vs. Utah where they had the ball at the end of the game and fumbled and it was returned for a TD and were also upset by Wyoming. Despite their mediocre 4-3 MWC record, they outgained league foes by an avergae of 53.8 ypg, the second best mark in the league. One factor that has me exicted about Colo St. this season is the fact that they were -15 in turnovers last year(their worst mark in the Lubick era)and still managed to get to a bowl. This year they only have just 10 starters returning and must replace 20 lettermen. They do get 4 MWC home games. Even with the loss of Van Pelt, I think the offesne will be solid and still be one of the top in the league. My biggest question mark this year is the defense which has just 3 starters back and appears simply average in all areas. The 3 returning starters are Lubick's lowest ever. These are usually the type year's that Lubick does best. The last time he had only 10 returning starters was in 1999 and the team went 8-3 in the regular season, winning the conference title. With 4 conference home games, I expect them to contend once again and record the teams 11th consecutive winning season.

Top 4 Heisman Contenders:

1. Timmy Chang, Hawaii

2. Matt Leinhart, USC

3. Jason White, Oklahoma

4. Darren Sproles, Kansas State

Funny thing is that I'm getting the general consensus from this magazine on the Big XII conference is "Oklahoma is winning it all the rest of the Big XII will have to eat there dust. Oh but Texas has a chance at the National Title....but they have to beat Oklahoma. Which they can't do."

Which is actually true. My prediction is that Texas will never beat OU as long as Mack Brown and Bob Stoops are the head coaches. Bob Stoops is like the best coach in the country and Mack Brown......well he has problems.
