Masked Man of Mystery

Couple of UFC questions

What precisely are the normal fight rules for UFC ie match length and illegal blows, and on the PPV DVDs do you get ther complete fights?

Normal Matches:

Three 5 Minute rounds.

Championship Matches:

Five 5 Minute rounds

The main rule is that there is no kicking a downed opponent - which means if an opponent is on all fours, you cannot kick or knee them. PRIDE, however, *does not* have this rule. The rest of the rules are just fair sportsmanship - no eye gouging, small joint manipulation (pulling on fingers), no holding on to the fence, hair pulling, strikes to the spine or back of the head.

I don't have the Event DVD's, but I do believe you get the full fights. HOWEVER, on Ultimate Submissions/KO's, I don't know if that is true (I heard you don't... I may be wrong).

Actually, fighters in the UFC can knee and kick their opponents while said opponent is on the floor every usual place except the head.

Also headbutts & downward elbow strikes are illegal.

Is it still illegal to throw kicks while wearing shoes of any type?

I know that was illegal in some of the early UFCs, but I honestly don't know if it still is.

But I'm pretty damned sure fish-hooking is still illegal.

Yep, fish hooking is still illegal.

Also, I'm unsure, but I don't think guys are even allowed to wear wrestling shoes at all anymore, thus negating wether or not it's legal to kick with them.

Guest Man Of 1,004 Modes

Damn, I haven't watched a UFC since like 1996. Seems like the rules changed quite a bit.

On Ultimate KOs, you don't, other than like Tank Abbot knocking someone senseless in 5 seconds or something, which is why I asked. Those DVDs really aren't worth it, even in the combo package, and the second one is definately worse because they waste time have Liddel and Mike Goldberg waste a lot of time saying very little.

You do get the full fights as well as all of the prelim fights. They don't show the entrances for all of the fights, but that really isn't an issue after UFC 43 (the last appearance of the ramp and entranceway, IIRC). There are also some extras starting from UFC43, mostly consisting of a couple of post fight and prefight interviews and maybe a vid package or two.

Most Pride FC dvds include the same "Best of Pride" highlights as an extra. Its 1997-present stuff featuring Gracie vs Takada fights showing Rickson beating Takada then Sakada beating 3 Gracies then it shifts to some Kerr or Coleman fights.

I think starting at Pride 19 (Bad Blood) they started to pack on some good extras. I haven't seen any of the newer ones in stores yet, but according to Sherdog descriptions they look pretty good.

Should I get UFC 44, UFC 45, or UFC 46? Which fight is better Couture vs Belfort or Couture vs Ortiz? How was the undercard on these shows?

Couture/Ortiz by default

As for the shows I would go

UFC 44 - This show was pretty awesome. Only 2 of the 9 fights going to decision and those 2 aren't too shabby.

UFC 46 - I haven't watched this whole show yet (just picked it up today). But I liked Lee Murray/Jorge Rivera, Sims/Mir II, and Penn/Hughes. And I haven't watched Verissimo/Newton yet, I am interested in seeing him again since the Hughes fight. You certainly aren't going to get this for Couture/Belfort.

UFC 45 - Yves Edwards/Nick Agallar was good, Baroni/Tanner I was entertaining standup and then all the side drama, Abbott/Cabbage had the freakshow quality to it, and Hughes (spelled Huges on the match list sheet)/Trigg was good.

The only way you could not know the story of Couture/Belfort II was if you didn't follow MMA at all. Anyways, it was a bullshit cut that stopped the fight in fifteen seconds, and that card isn't very strong. I'd take UFC 44 or even 43. One that I was interested in but haven't gotten yet is 39. Tons of extras, and the card looks strong as hell. Haven't seen it yet but I know the results of what matters anyway.
