Guest FrigidSoul Report post Posted July 9, 2004 the Phils turned down an offer from Oakland that would send Chase Utley and Gavin Floyd to the A's for Barry Zito. That would have been a terrible move by the Phillies. As for Benson who knows? He's really not worth anything, but some team desperate for pitching(like the Dodgers) could go after him. Since Dodger stadium tends to lower ERAs he may do well there.
treble 0 Report post Posted July 9, 2004 That Jays win tonight was awesome, after blowing the lead in the 8th they comeback and score 4 in the 9th off of 2 HRs, one by Dave Berg and a walk-off shot by Delgado. They're in their non-sucking mode right now, it seems, although it was just against a last-place team.
Guest Anglesault Report post Posted July 9, 2004 He'll simply blow it off and say "This is not the Bobby Abreu show" and cut off callers. Abreu was able to make tomorrow's sports radio bearable up here, though. If the Mets would have won, I would have listened to dozens of Mets fans talking about how-I shit you not- the Mets are now the odds on favorites to win the World Series. Guest Anglesault Report post Posted July 9, 2004 Because I'm a fucked up human being, I decided to look at some of the teams from the shitty era. There are names there I hoped I'd never see again. Mel Hall nearly sent me into spasms. And Wade Taylor. I'm gonna go cry now.

The Mets fans I'm around tend to be more realitic, but maybe that is an upstate New York thing. The Met callers on the FAN tend to blow every win out of proportion, so I can see why you are coming from Anglesault. In my opinion, no Met fan should ever have the right to be cocky. Even when we swept the Yanks, I knew it wasn't THAT big of a deal.
Bruiser Chong 0 Report post Posted July 9, 2004 Houston loses again, leaving them just a game above .500 and nine and a half games out. If they lose the series to the Dodgers and the Cards win their series with the Cubs, the Stros may be screwed as far as the NL Central goes.
strummer 0 Report post Posted July 9, 2004 Anglesault, what about these names: Mike Gallego, Bob Geren, Dan Pasqua, Bobby Meecham, Wayne Tolleson, Steve Farr, Paul Assenmacher, ~Andy Hawkins~!, Kevin Maas!, Rich Monteleone, Melido Perez!, Dave Island, Scott Kaminiecki, Hensley "Bam Bam" Muelens, Spike Owen, Ken Phelps, Jeff Johnson, Don Slaught, and the immortal Rick Rhoden! Did you see the Andy Hawkins no hitter that he lost 4-0, AS? What was that, 89 or 90, against the White Sox?
Guest Anglesault Report post Posted July 9, 2004 Did you see the Andy Hawkins no hitter that he lost 4-0, AS? What was that, 89 or 90, against the White Sox? I missed that fiasco (thankfully), when I went away for the weekend with some friends. I came home, saw the look on my dad's face and knew the Yanks had done something. Never would have guessed it was THAT.

If they lose the series to the Dodgers and the Cards win their series with the Cubs, the Stros may be screwed as far as the NL Central goes. I truly believe that if the Astros continue to falter and look out of it by the trade deadline then they'll become sellers. Of course they'll only give up Beltran and Jeff Kent IMO but still, its their admitance to failure. They also wouldn't be in this predicament if they hadn't of traded away Billy Wagner. They really made their bullpen too thin by giving up Wagner and now Dotel for a rental player.
Bruiser Chong 0 Report post Posted July 9, 2004 I thought it was a bad move when they gave up Wagner, but figured with Lidge and Dotel, they'd be okay. When they gave up Dotel, I thought it'd be a boost for their offense, but at the same time, it left Lidge, a guy who was the 7th inning guy last season, as the closer. Make no mistake, he's been great in the role, but they've got no one else who's nearly as lights out as Lidge, Dotel and Wagner were the last third of the game last season. sfaJack 0 Report post Posted July 9, 2004 Anyone else hear these insane Clemens back to Boston or New York trade rumors? How the hell does stupid shit like that get started?
Guest FrigidSoul Report post Posted July 9, 2004 I'm actually reading various internet sites that are saying Clemens would be open to being traded right now. Evidently he said something along the lines of him not having anything left to prove so he's only playing now to win. I believe he's also upset with the amount of time Pettite has missed after doing so much to get Roger to sign on. Randy Johnson is open to a trade. He said Boston isn't on the top of his list of places he'd like to go but he'd be willing to pitch on the East Coast if it was for a serious contender. Right now he's said he would wave his no-trade clause for the Yankees(that bastard) and The Angels. Don't expect RJ in pinstripes or Clemens returning to the Yankees anytime soon though. Both the owner of the D-Backs and the owner of the Astros hate Steinbrenner and do not like dealing with his team. Something tells me if the Yankees wanted RJ then the D-Backs would screw them by taking whatever they have left for prospects along with making the Yankees take Matt Mantai's contract as well. EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted July 9, 2004 It would take a lot to get the Big Unit, and I'm not sure the Yankees have the prospects necessary. The Diamondbacks have Johnson under contract for next year, so they have no reason to trade him unless they're blown away by an offer.
sfaJack 0 Report post Posted July 9, 2004 Eh, the only article I've bothered to read on the Clemens deal was a link to a NY Daily Post and wasn't even about Clemens, really. It had to do with Randy Johnson and cited a source "familiar with Johnson's thinking" (whatever the hell that means) who also said "same thing with Clemens in Houston" in regards to Johnson being frustrated with Arizona's struggles and possibly wanting a trade. Link It gave me a pretty good laugh because there is no fucking way Roger Clemens is going to be traded from the Astros this year. None.
EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted July 9, 2004 Anyone see this? A possible 4 player trade between the Phils and Cards. Millwood and Polanco for Morris and Kline. Ugh. Morris isn't any better than Millwood, and Polanco is worth more than a middle reliever. Even if Kline is a local product. I heard on WIP that Peter Gammons said that the Phils turned down an offer from Oakland that would send Chase Utley and Gavin Floyd to the A's for Barry Zito. Worst offer I've heard in quite awhile. I can't blame Billy Beane for trying however. The only hitter in the line-up for the Yankees tonight with an average above .300 is Miguel Cairo. And oddly enough, he's still their least productive hitter. The Yankees are the poster-children for the effectiveness of plate discipline. 10th in the league in batting average, and second in OBP, and runs scored. Bored 0 Report post Posted July 9, 2004 http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c...SPG827J3SQ1.DTL GIANTS NOTEBOOK Bonds to enter Home Run Derby Henry Schulman Friday, July 9, 2004 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Barry Bonds, who swore he'd never participate in another All-Star Game Home Run Derby, has agreed to take part in this year's contest in Houston on Monday and join the three other active 500-homer hitters, Ken Griffey Jr., Sammy Sosa and Rafael Palmeiro. Bonds announced his decision Thursday after Major League Baseball agreed to compensate him for the day of rest he will lose by taking part. In discussing his reluctance to be in the derby, Bonds said, "I don't need to be doing that stuff. I need the off day. That's important from my point of view, especially when we're in the race. I fly from here on Sunday, no off day, basically do a home run hitting contest, play in the All-Star Game the next day, fly home with my family, then fly all the way back to Colorado Wednesday (to start the second half). At my age, soon to be 40, a day off is very important." Bonds' participation is important for MLB, which has invited all living 500-homer hitters to Houston. Bonds won the Home Run Derby in Philadelphia in 1996. He will join Sosa, Griffey and Jim Thome on the NL team. Palmeiro leads an AL team that includes David Ortiz, Hank Blalock and Jason Giambi. sfaJack 0 Report post Posted July 9, 2004 Eh, Bonds is Bonds. What can you do? I don't blame him for wanting a day off, but to ask for extra compensation is a bit much. Just sit it out if it's that big of a problem Barry...I promise not to miss you. I have found it sort of puzzling that, in a stadium with a very short left field, 7 of the 8 HR Derby participants hit left-handed. It's also equally mystifying why MLB has chosen to have the roof CLOSED for at least the first hour of the Derby, thus possibly robbing us of seeing someone blast one over the train and out of the stadium. Go ahead and get your bitching out of the way... Bonds is right, The Derby is a risk for him to take and who knows if the Compenstation was money... All Players crave days off and while the other participates are sacrificing their day off...Bonds is the only one knocking down on History's door. What's More important? That he hits in a overall meaningless Derby or gets 715+? So if he feels like he should be covered for taking the risk of the derby...i have no problem with it. Sure he is doing it for more money, but I'm a asshole like that...make more money when you can if you can get away with it is perfectly fine.

the pinjockey 0 Report post Posted July 10, 2004 Taken from the latest Stark R&G article Meanwhile, teams that have talked to the Phillies say they have explored deals for just about every pitcher with any shot to be available -- Benson, Lowe, Barry Zito, Randy Johnson, Ramon Ortiz and even Gil Meche. They also undoubtedly would have interest in Jamie Moyer, Paul Wilson, Cory Lidle and Tony Armas Jr. if they ever make it onto the market. But they've been telling clubs they won't deal Utley, Ryan Madson or their two elite pitching prospects, Gavin Floyd or Cole Hamels. And they would only trade Eastern League home run leader Ryan Howard for a player they could keep beyond this season. This is the stuff I am sick of. Why would you tell teams that none of your top four prospects are available? What would it hurt to at least find out what you could get. Especially for Hamels, who I am really starting to worry about his arm. I am not saying trade Hamels for the typical stopgap reliever or anything, but at least listen. The Phillies always seem to do this, never trading prospects when their value is highest and end up having them fall back to Earth and become essentially worthless. Rob E Dangerously 0 Report post Posted July 10, 2004 Royals lineup tonight 1- Relaford (3B) 2- Graffanino (2B) 3- Sweeney (1B) 4- Harvey (DH) 5- Mateo (CF) 6- Stairs (RF) 7- Berroa (SS) 8- Dee Brown (LF) 9- John Buck © I can think of at least 3 things wrong with this lineup #1: Desi Relaford batting leadoff. But, Tony Pena, AL manager of the Year, insists on giving Desi insane amounts of playing time. Even if Graffanino is a better leadoff hitter. #2: Mike Sweeney is the best RBI man on this team, and Pena refuses to bat him fourth. Ken Harvey would be a much better #3 hitter. #3: Ruben Mateo batting 5th? I'm thinking we have a better right-handed hitter to bat 5th.. like Berroa I'm not too negative on Sweeney playing the field, even after missing 6 games with back spasms
