This Week In Baseball

Recommended Posts

On Baseball Tonight, which ironically aired this morning, they just said Griffey is out for the All-Star Game and the Home Run Derby. So, who should replace him?

Also, Dusty Baker has denied that he'll have Prior come in for long relief for Kerry Wood in tonight's game, which is kind of a shame.

I'm thinking Beltran's the best replacement for him, since he deserves to be in the game and plays Griffey's position, anyway. Figures Griffey would spoil the first time the entire outfield were members of the 500 Club.

Jayson Stark is saying the Red Sox and Phillies are discussing a deal.

Derek Lowe for Milwood.

I don't see how that really helps either team. Red Sox payroll goes up and they probably win 3 or 4 more games than they would with Lowe. The Phillies cut payroll but their pitching staff becomes even weaker.

I'm obliged to think its bullshit.

Man, if that one went through, I'd have to send my condolences to Al.

God dammit! Griffey's hurt again? I hate everyone in that NL Central except the Cubs(and I ain't no Cubs fan)and Griffey was a bright spot for me. Dammit. Figures the one guy I like watching in the division that I hate(but is always on TV in my area!!!!) gets hurt.

Mariners released Rich Aurilia. Just puts a nice bow on the terrible offseason decisions Bill Bavasi made.

Funny considering that's the replacement they wanted for Carlos Guillen. What a bunch of idiots.

And it's official, Beltran will be the replacement for Griffey.

The Angels have just sweeped Toronto in Toronto for the first time in quite a while.

Most of the guys are back from injury now and we are looking in good shape - we just need to make sure we win the upcoming division series' against Texas.

Although some more help in the bullpen with a starter wouldn't go amiss.

Manny Ramirez said he couldn't play today because of a tweaked hamstring or something. While I'd normally be all over the guy he hasn't had a game day off in forever and while I love Schilling I don't think him giving shit to a guy who plays everyday when he plays once every 5 games is justified.

I also don't understand why Doug Mirabelli had to play today when Varitek gets the next 3 days off anyways. I understand he's been catching Wakefield for the past 2 years exclusively but there's no need for it here.

With Manny not in the line-up he should have had Youkilis playing first and Tek catching. That would have helped the offense out alot more than Doug Mirabelli and Dave McCarty. Of course Wakefield giving up homeruns as if it was 2001 isn't helpful.

Don't these minor injuries Manny has always pop up right before the All-Star Game? Seems like he has sat out quite a few in recent years. Obviously reserve judgment to see if he does pull out again.

In other news Octavio Dotel once again pitched like crap today, although wasn't a save opportunity. This bullpen is just cursed.

In 2001 he had a hamstring problem

In 2002 he had a broken figure from that stupid head first slide

Last year he called in at 6am and said he couldn't show up to the last game before the All Star Break because his mom fainted

Today his hamstring was bothering him

If it really is bothering him then he should pull out of the All Star game

After Matt Stairs was hit by Mike DeJean (with 2 on and 2 out).. Rudy Seanez throws at Jose Leon.

Marvin, why is Jose Leon around?

I'm not Marvin but I would guess its the same reason as why Rudy Seanez is still around.

I'd take Seanez and his 5.68 ERA over Leon and his .148 BA

;)

I think Seanez is here due to a good AAA showing (he was called up after the team released Leskanic)

Doug Mirabelli makes me look like a fool by crushing a 2 run homer.

Holy shit. Back-to-back homers ties the game in the 7th. With the homer Damon extends his hitting streak too.

And Damon hits ANOTHER damn homer. He can look like Grizzly Adams all he wants if he's going to produce like this.

Just think, a few weeks back everyone wanted Beltran trade here and then damon trade elsewhere for nothing.

Don't get me wrong, Beltran is an amazing player, but he's a rental and he's a waste of prospects that this team needs for a pitcher.

When do the Orioles play NY again? It would be nice for Huckaby to do his flying kneedrop onto Jeter's shoulder once more.

And the Sox can't make the comeback, as they leave Johnny Damon on third to end the game.

Elsewhere, Dan Kolb gave up his first extra base of the season. Two, in fact; both homeruns, giving Cincy a 9-6 lead in the 9th. Figures, since I just picked up Kolb a couple of weeks ago.

Ya, its kind of disheartening because with the way they have been playing they should have swept Texas. Bone headed play by Reese to get picked off and no pinch hitter for Kentucky Fried Kevin Millar ended up hurting. Can't win them all though and at least in the second half they'll be healthy.

Griffey Jr has a partially torn hamstring by the way. Yeowch.

Gammons also said that there's a deal in line already if Houston falls out of it completely. 3 team deal

Dodgers get Beltran

Oakland gets Jeff Kent

Houston gets prospects from both LA and Oakland.

Has Kent actually agreed to waive his no-trade clause? Word flying around here last week was that it was "doubtful" he would.

No clue. Just passing along what Gammons said on the Futures Game. It could be complete bullshit, but I thought I'd place it there because Gammons usually has an inklan on what's happening.

If Houston was trading players and getting ready to retool for next season though rather than make a run for things then I'm sure Kent would wave his no-trade to be a part of a WS contender.

Kent ripped A's fans a few years back when he was with Giants for I guess taunting him or something. Kent is known for being uptight so I don't know if he'd want to play for a team with such a loose clubhouse atmoshpere. All that being said I'd take him as a rental. Of course all of this is just Gammons probably throwing shit against the wall to see if it sticks and it won't happen if the Astros are still in the Wild Card race on July 31st, which seems likely they will be.

Not if they keep dropping games like they have been. They're down 3-2 again today in the 8th, which means we're prepping for Gagne time. Actually, scratch that, since just as soon as I typed that, Paul LaDucha hit a grandslam, making it a five-run game.
