USA Patriot Act Survives House Vote to Weaken It

An effort to eliminate one of the most controversial parts of the USA Patriot Act was narrowly defeated in the U.S. House of Representatives Thursday.

By a final tie vote of 210-210, the Republican-controlled House defeated an amendment that would have barred federal agents from getting information from bookstores and libraries on their patrons.

The Bush administration had threatened a veto if it passed.

The amendment was supported by Democrats and some Republicans.

The initial vote was 219-201 in favor of the bill, but in a move that infuriated the bill's supporters, House Republican leaders extended the usual 15-minute voting period by 23 minutes.

That gave them time to persuade several Republicans to switch their votes.

It's called dirty politics. What else do you expect from an administration being run by George W. Bush? He lied about his National Guard service, then destroyed evidence. He lied about snorting cocaine. He even lied about his traffic accident.

I consider just about everything the current administration does to be suspect. I'll feel much better when the eventual impeachment trial of W. Bush uncovers just how many skeletons he's been shoving into his closet. You can't escape justice forever, you lying sack of shit, President Bush.

It's called dirty politics.

If you wish to refer to it as such.

Such as?

He lied about snorting cocaine. He even lied about his traffic accident.

I suppose evidence is soon forthcoming.

Good for you.

Not if he destroyed the evidence.

Anyways what does this all mean? It sounds to me like they're keeping people from using documented evidence as evidence. For example...

Person A - Prove to me that I did that!

Person B - Ok, well this person you once worked with that wrote a book detailing the incident says right here that they saw you do that.

Person A - You can't use that! Doesn't count! Find another means!

Maybe I'm not seeing the dirty politics here. This happens all the time; a bill almost gets passed, but the majority party stalls, rallies its troops, and shoots it down. To say that this is some sort of "Overarching Conservative Conspiracy" is moronic because this is what Congress is designed to do.

And love the Cocaine stuff, I really do. Of course, had we been talking about a simple man off the street who hasn't done Coke in 30 years, you'd be reprimanding yourselves for your own treatment towards what happened. Forgive and forget, remember?

Shhhh.

You're not supposed to point out how hilariously hypocritical he is. It's bad manners.

You mean to tell me that on Capitol Hill people tend to bend the rules a bit to get their bills passed?

H-O-L-Y S-H-I-T-!

You may have stumbled onto something here. Why, next thing you know, there may be these other people in Washington that go to elected officials and try to convince them to vote a certain way.

How about shedding some light on that practice?...

Haven't you caught on yet. Everything's a conservative conspiracy. Haven't you been coming to the meetings lately?

S

So he's stuck in a Catch-22 where he can't be found innocent, even if he is?

Of COURSE we all realize that our representatives bend the rules to get their bills passed.

But it's only a bad thing when the Republicans do it. When the Democrats do this, we're supposed to look the other way.

I'm rather shocked I have to point out the obvious here.
