Benoit DVD Discussion Thread

The Paul Orndorff footage was pretty damn sad....

Overall though, this is a bitchin' DVD. I love it. The Al Snow match was a pretty damn good beating, and I love the Japan stuff.

And I wish 2 Cold was still around in the states. He was the shit back in the day.

Paul O? elaborate please.....

There was a brief clip of Paul Orndorff in 2000 where he didn't get the surgery he was told to get and how he broke down.

Benoit talked to him and he was convinced by Orndorff to get the surgery.

Having actually said down and thoroughly looked at a few matches, I can positively give the following star ratings:

Benoit Vs. Angle - Cage Match, Raw: *** 1/4

Benoit Vs. Angle, Royal Rumble '03: **** 1/2

Benoit Vs. Booker T, Great American Bash '98: * 3/4

Benoit Vs. Guerrero, October '95 Nitro: **

Even the stuff that isn't rated highly (take the Nitro match) is awesome to have historically. Some great spots in it, especially for it being a 1-hour TV show. (And a major blown one, heh).

Booker/Benoit was a HUGE dissapointment, and they had many better matches in the series. Restholds hurt this. As did Benoit controlling the ENTIRE match, only to go down to three straight blows (one of which MISSED Benoit clearly) and lose.

Angle/Benoit Rumble is amazing. The end sequences are what WRESTLING IS ABOUT. Drama, surprise, and put both guys over huge.

The cage match is very great. The three "big spots", mixed with good matwork, Benoit nailing 9 Germans, but gets a little repetitive at times. Still, great to have a copy of.

WHAT?! That match was great. Why such a low rating?

Benoit really needs to bring back the rolling snap suplexes into his arsenal.

BTW, anybody else think Orton is crazy enough to take a wildbomb at SummerSlam? This DVD is gonna expose a whole new generation of fans to it's deadly death and it's a long shot but perhaps Benoit will bust it out.

Thank god I found mine at Best Buy in Aurora (23.99, but marked down to 19.99). God, those matches in Japan rocked. Honestly, the only "not great" matches were the Sabu and Booker T matches, although I can see why both were included. I really enjoyed the main feature as well. This DVD is truely a must buy.

On the Benoit vs Liger match which I gotta get around to rewatching -- Benoit's headbutt was a little more powerful here as it could end a match. He was more likely to pin someone with it. The german suplex with the bridge was more powerful too and I can't remember if he used it/tried for it or not but the belly to back suplex off of the top rope was very powerful as I believe he beat Liger/guy I can't remember right now and Owen Hart with it.

On Benoit vs Sasuke it's kind of an upping of the famous Dynamite Kid vs TIger Mask series. DK vs Tiger Mask for the 90s if you will. It's also a tribute to the tournament in the same exact building where Dynamite Kid fought Cobra for the WWF title in a tournament back in 85. The finish of Benoit vs Sasuke is a tribute to the closing sequence of DK vs Cobra where DK does a gutwrench suplex off of the middle ropes. An upgrading if you will.

You mean to tell me you are an announcer for the WWE and you don't even know who Lyger is?

Honestly, I'd be shocked if many people in the company aside those who have frequented Japan or if any of the McMahon family are really familiar with many Japanese wrestlers. I'd even say about 90% of the WWe fan base has no clue who Lyger is.

Hell, Chris and Dean were pretty clueless about what's going on in Japan now (60-70 companies one of them stated) . Being in the WWE is a *really* demanding job. Granted he should have done some homework and been able to tell the difference between that and Lucha, but's lets not get crazy here.

-Paul Jacobi-

I didn't start watching Puroresu until I was about 17 or 18 and I knew who Lyger was WAY before that. It's mainly because of his run in the early 90's in WCW that I remembered him from. Now, I figure most people in the WWE SHOULD or WOULD know who he is. Even if they don't......they should have done their homework before presenting something like this on a DVD. It's understandable......but not inexcusable.

WHen I was up at an autograph session with Benoit there was a Q & A beforehand. Now of course the 400 or so people there would've been more hardcore than other fans but nontheless when Benoit mentioned Lyger's name some people definitely knew who he was. I was very happy with the pop he got. NOthing near the other WWE superstars but enough to put a little smile on my face.

By the way how much mentioning of the Dynamite Kid is on the Benoit DVD?

A decent amount to start the DVD out. Basically about Benoit/Benoit's dad/Benoit's friend talking about the similarities between the two. Benoit also has a nice little story about the first time they met.

I bought the Benoit DVD today, and I have seen a little bit of it already. I love it.

Thankfully, we still have the option of listening to the original Japanese commentary. The English alternative was annoying and dull in my opinion.

I'm not a Benoit fan, so to speak, and I want to know if the disc is worth it purely for the wrestling.

As much as I liked Benoit before, this DVD really helped me respect him and his accomplishments even more. Chris himself told everything so candidly and came across as such (still) a fan of this business and a true master of his craft.

I guess to rephrase that, the Rey 619 DVD gave me a knew respect for lil' Rey-rey. I never cared much for him, but I'd now call myself somewhat of a Rey fan. Will this DVD make me a Benoit fan?

I would honestly say, yes.

Yeah, we posted at the same time.

I do like Rey, now. Eddie, Booker, RVD, Angle, Jericho...a lot of people, I guess. I've just never saw the huge appeal of Benoit. I've seen a couple of his ECW matches, almost all his WCW and WWF matches, and that's it. While there were definitely some great matches there, it just hasn't connected with me the way Steamboat, or even Eddie, has. I'll get the DVD, hopefully it will change that.

My favorite quote from the dvd commentary from the match with Regal is "No wasted motion". That has to be one of the greatest counter-to-counter non stop action matches I have ever seen. After watching that match I now want to see a heel Regal challenge Benoit for the title in a 30 minute Ironman match.

I finally picked up this DVD. I had it on pre-order from DDD, but it didn't ship on the 27th, so I called and asked about it, and they told me that it wouldn't ship untill mid-August. I proptly cancelled my order from them, then drove straight to Best Buy to pick it up, for about $4 more.

This is going to be great. So far I've watched part of the SJC 94 finals match, and it just so odd watching this on a WWE DVD, even odder watching it with the Japanese commentary. I've only watched about half of it, and I also believe that this moron with Dean and Chris is a freaking jackoff. It's like they got some ten year old, a ten year old who knows nothing about wrestling, to join them on commentary.

Ugh.

It's funny though, but they really should have got someone else to do it. Then again, maybe they put him on there to look like a moron in the first place.

Benoit vs. Sabu from November to Remember is the biggest waste of an extra I've ever seen, since the ENTIRE thing is covered in the main feature. And it's a travesty that not one match against or with Jericho was covered, here. WWE could've gone with any one of these matches:

Backlash 2000 vs. Jericho

Judgment Day 2000 vs. Jericho

SummerSlam 2000 vs. Jericho

with Jericho v. HHH/Austin

Super J-Cup 1995 match

Well I just watched the main feature and I was impressed. I didn't know a lot of Benoit's early years and I learned a lot. Most of the footage was new to me and now I respect Benoit a lot more. I'll get to the extras this weekend.

I'm hoping that in the future, they have a Chris Jericho and Chris Benoit: The History DVD. They have so many good matches together, that it could easily be a DVD. Maybe after just one more feud for the World Title to round it up, they could make one. I'm thinking that there's GOT to be a reason for no Jericho stuff, and I'm really hoping this is it.

The #1 thing I want out of the Benoit title reign is a Benoit vs Jericho heavyweight title match. They didn't do it in Winnipeg for whatever reasons but I just hope they don't wait too long and as a result we have a titleless Benoit by the time he fights Jericho.

To add on to Leon's list -- The bloody IC title Smackdown match between them and the Rumble match were great too.

They don't have a "HHH Vs. The Rock...Their Matches" or "The Best of The Rock Vs. Stone Cold: The Rivalry" DVD....

Not to those suggested DVDs are better...but you can see what I'm getting at. Unfortunately, keep wishing.

But I just can't think of a logical reason why they'd leave off that rivilary all together from the DVD. Not that I'm really complaining, since I got most of Jericho/Benoit matches on tape, but it seems truly odd.

I am still trying to figure out why I can never buy Jericho merchandise at live WWE events.
