Cable Descramblers.....

Recommended Posts

I'm sure most of you have switched over to digital, but for those of us still with analog, I have a question for you. My, uh, friend, is in the market for a cable descrambler, so he, ummm, doesn't have to pay money to rent a box from the cable company. He's seen a lot of them for sale on eBay ranging from reasonable prices to prices int he mid hundreds. He has also heard that most cable companies now have ways to send out bullets to cause the box to stop functioning correctly, and also provide them with enough evidence to bring you to court. Is there anyone knowlegeable on this subject who could help my friend out? Can anyone suggest a good box for him to use?

Most areas have all the premiums and PPV on digital anyways so you aren't going anywhere.

Plus if you get caught... not fun.

If he gets caught, he's going to go to ass-pounding federal prison.

it is legal to own and sell them, it is only against the law to have them hooked up, and unless you personally let a cable man into your house, you aren't going to be seen with it hooked up.

Not true. Most cable companies can scan for illegal boxes. They can also send a signal thru the cable line to see if it's one of their boxes or not. I imagine this is easier with digital cable, since it's IP-based, and any digital descramblers that might work should be ludicrously easy to find.

I think this is a techie issue, so I'll move it there.

I personally know someone who was caught with a descrambler hooked up and the cable tech just messed with their digital box and it didn't work no mo'. They then spent the next few months trying to re-hack and descramble stuff but everytime they got something working it seems the company would remotely fry the box or it would "just stop working." One day they were just sitting around watching TV when they noticed a cable truck outside their house, the tech simply cut the cable to their building and then they were really SOL!

Well, I know in Canada that was (is?) a legitiamte buisness, and was much easier to accomplish because you could just go to any electronics store which had the equipment and get a card and receiver that would give you access to everything, and it was (is?) totally legal. In America though it was much more difficult, you had to have own equipment and cards and receivers and you would have to keep re-wiritng it, and it was a lot more trouble then it was worth. That's what I remebmr hearing anyways.
