A matter of opinion (Perhaps the first of several)

There's no real thinking behind this, but I figured I'd see how the TSM people feel about this. I suppose a poll might have worked better, but I'm looking for actual discussion, not people just stating which choice they voted for.

 

Anyway, this first matter of opinion (And if response is good, there might be more), I ask the question:

 

Which kind of quarterback do you prefer, the Bernie "Just be glad I dropped back to pass" Kosar type or the Randall Cunnigham type? Also, if you wish, mention your favorite quarterback of the type you favor, both, or whatever.

I prefer a quarterback who is gonna win and get the job done. Doesn't matter to me if he is mobile or not. My Redskins won with immobile QB's like Theismann and Rypien, but again it doesn't matter.

 

I will say it is more fun to watch a QB who can make plays with their feet like McNabb and Vick.

I prefer old school drop-back quarterbacks, although I'd like the quarterback to have some scrambling ability (just to avoid sacks or whatnot). I am not a fan of the Culpeppers, Cunninghams, McNabbs, and Vicks of the world. They run too much for my liking.

Well I did prefer my stationary pocket passer at OU until he stood there and got his ass sacked 13 times in the Sugar Bowl........so maybe I want something mobile.

 

How about somebody that can go mobile and throw it deep?

Up here at the UW games it was much more fun to watch someone like Marcus Tuiasosopo than Brock Huard. Mobile QBs all the way.

The perfect quarterback would thing pass first and run second. Now Micheal Vick is a glorified running back that can throw the ball.

I'll say the pocket passer who has a great completion % but can scramble when he needs to. Basically guys who can throw for 60%+ while running for 100-300 yards over a season. Guys who fit this profile would be the following, Yards = Av. per Game w/most rushing yards in a season.

 

- Brett Favre(14 yards)

- Joe Montana(18 yards)

- Warren Moon(17 yards)

- Bart Starr(12 yards)

I think I'd rather take a stationary passer. Obviously the chance of getting sacked is even more so but a freak Michael Vick like injury is a lot more likely with a scrambler and I'd rather him just have the wind knocked out of him and not have his leg shattered.

 

But yeah, basically a cool calm type who can scramble when he needs to but his main objective is just making the good play and I'm of the opinion that the good play is usually gonna be the drop back and pass personally.

Obviously a mobile QB presents more options, but some of my favorite QBs are guys who can just drop back and chuck it. Guys like Warren Moon and Byron Leftwich. I also like short running QBs, although most of them don't get to the NFL: Brad Banks, Charlie Ward, Josh Harris (Bowling Green).

When I see a team headed by one of these run-first, pass-second QB's win a championship, then maybe I'll believe that. The whole position of quarterback revolves around the idea of the forward pass, when you take that away, you just have a bunch of guys who can run, and a quick enough defense can stop them.

 

Now, on the same page, you can't have a completely immobile passer either because defensive guys are getting stronger and faster, and quarterbacks need to become smarter and more agile as well to avoid them and make quick decisions.

 

My personal favorite QB is obviously Brett Favre, but I have a lot of respect for Elway, Marino, and Kenny Stabler, as well as Moon and to a certain extent Cunningham.
