Bored 0 Report post Posted July 31, 2004 Just being reported by ESPN News. Details coming, four teams involved. Definently know the Expos are the 3rd, don't know who the fourth is.
Guest Smell the ratings!!! Report post Posted July 31, 2004 I've heard Gonzalez and a minor leaguer to the Expos for Cabrera, who is presumably part of the Nomar deal
Bruiser Chong 0 Report post Posted July 31, 2004 So the BoSox got Gonzalez and prospects? Any word of Clement is involved in this deal? If so, I'll be torn on the move, but if not, I'm all for it.
Bored 0 Report post Posted July 31, 2004 The rumor was Matt Clement and Orlando Cabrera go to the Red Sox. But that was when it was a three team deal.
KingPK 0 Report post Posted July 31, 2004 I'm willing to wager that Clement went to Boston. I was wondering why Nomar hadn't been playing the last few games. "His heel is acting up" just seemed like just an excuse.
Bruiser Chong 0 Report post Posted July 31, 2004 I'm hearing that the prospects the Cubs gave up were Brendan Harris and Francis Beltran. Beltran was a good arm out of the pen and was supposedly a guy they wanted in the closing role down the road, so this is interesting. Obviously, things aren't all fleshed out yet. Bored 0 Report post Posted July 31, 2004 OFFICIAL TRADE Cubs get: Nomar Garciaparra Red Sox get: Orlando Cabrera Doug Mientkiewicz Twins get: Prospects Expos get: Alex Gonzalez Prospects
treble 0 Report post Posted July 31, 2004 Weird. TheScore's ticker was saying that it was a 4-team trade, but now it says 3-team. I'm pretty sure they're just picking up their news from ESPN, too.
the pinjockey 0 Report post Posted July 31, 2004 Well what they ran on the bottom line thing was Prospects to Twins, not Lowe, but at this point screw it. When they announce it, I'll buy it.
KingPK 0 Report post Posted July 31, 2004 Wow, a starter, a SS AND a 1st baseman for Nomar? AND Lowe is gone? Why to the Twins, though? I thought he sucked on the turf. *Is happy with trade*
Guest Smell the ratings!!! Report post Posted July 31, 2004 all we know for sure is ESPN has no clue what's going on
Bored 0 Report post Posted July 31, 2004 CORRECTION Matt Clement is not involved in the trade.
the pinjockey 0 Report post Posted July 31, 2004 It is just prospects to the Twins.
treble 0 Report post Posted July 31, 2004 And now someone switched it back to 4-teams.
KingPK 0 Report post Posted July 31, 2004 Guess you can drop Clement and Lowe from the equation. I got this right off ESPNNews: Sox get Cabrera Mientkiewicz Cubs get Nomar Twins get Prospects Expos get Alex Gonzalez and prospects No Clement kind of bugs me, but they got a good SS and a defensive 1B, so that's worth getting Nomar out of there. Bruiser Chong 0 Report post Posted July 31, 2004 CORRECTION Matt Clement is not involved in the trade. YES~!!!
Guest Smell the ratings!!! Report post Posted July 31, 2004 seems very unlikely that they would dump Nomar for just Cabrera and Funny Name. I'm betting the 4 team is the right trade.
Bruiser Chong 0 Report post Posted July 31, 2004 So in summary, the Cubs gave up Gonzo, Harris, Beltran and technically Cabrera. I liked Beltran and despite his poor bat, I can't help but feel bad for Gonzo, who just went from a playoff chase to a dead-end situation. But that aside, I think the Cubs are huge winners here, getting Nomar without giving up Clement. I know expectations for the Cubs were high, but their WC chances just improved vastly. Bruiser Chong 0 Report post Posted July 31, 2004 I'm curious, too. What do the BoSox fans on the board think of this trade? Seems like a fairly poor deal for them if you ignore that Nomar may have not been back next year.
the max 0 Report post Posted July 31, 2004 I like the deal for the Red Sox. They improved their defense and got a shortstop that they'll be able to keep. Also, this keeps Millar away from the defensive side of the ball.
Precious Roy 0 Report post Posted July 31, 2004 What a stupid trade. The Red Sox just got fleeced, they should get more than a couple .250 hitters for Nomar. I'd be shocked if the "FINAL-FINAL" deal doesn't have them picking up at least another reliever.
KingPK 0 Report post Posted July 31, 2004 Now that I've thought about it, and have gotten the full trade: Well, it improves the defense (especially at 1st base), and I hear Cabrera is a good defensive SS. But no Clement is not good, and just those two guys (with no prospects or anything), really lowers the quality of the trade for Boston. On the radio they're speculating that Nomar's injury might have played a part in the Sox not getting top dollar for him. And now they said the Sox added their 2003 1st round pick (OF Matt Murton) into the deal.
Precious Roy 0 Report post Posted July 31, 2004 I actually think Dave Roberts is a more interesting pickup *shrugs*
KingPK 0 Report post Posted July 31, 2004 Official announcement at 6PM. I really don't know why they couldn't have thrown in Lowe for some prospects or a 3rd or 4th starter or something. This is a kind of bad trade.
Bruiser Chong 0 Report post Posted July 31, 2004 Now here's the question: is Nomar just a rental or is he going to re-sign with the Cubs next season? I think on the surface, this was a great move for the Cubs, but they gave up three highly-touted prospects. A pretty hefty tag if Nomar is just a two-month rental. the max 0 Report post Posted July 31, 2004 I don't think he'll resign. He's going west coast.
KingPK 0 Report post Posted July 31, 2004 He won't come cheap if they want to re-sign him. Probably to the tune of 11-13M/yr.
Guest Smell the ratings!!! Report post Posted July 31, 2004 it's not the same team obviously, but Nomar was less then thrilled about being in Chicago when he was supposed to swap with Mags Ordonez before the season. The question is, is Nomar enough to catch the Cards, or are they looking wild card?
Gert T 0 Report post Posted July 31, 2004 I agree, I think that Nomar would stay depending on the offer, otherwise he is going out west. Wild Card great chance, catching the Cards, no chance.
Bruiser Chong 0 Report post Posted July 31, 2004 I'd have to imagine at this point they're just looking to ensure their possession of the WC. I think this trade greatly helps them with that goal and that if they wanted a good chance of actually getting it and then being successful in the postseason, a fairly big move was needed. So I get this trade, but it's a bit short-sighted at the same time, since it's up in the air if he'll even re-sign. That's what would have made giving up Clement so stupid. Even though he's also a free agent at the end of the season, I think they've got a better chance of re-signing him and at a better price.
