MarvinisaLunatic Posted August 8, 2004 Report Posted August 8, 2004 Full article SAN FRANCISCO - An aspiring politician and video game designer who faked his own beheading by Iraqi militants set off a short-lived media frenzy Saturday after media around the world began showing his homemade video of the gruesome hoax. Benjamin Vanderford, 22, said he posted the 55-second clip, which shows a knife sawing against his neck, on an online file-sharing network in May. It circulated in cyberspace before crossing over to major media, airing on Arab television. "It was part of a stunt, but no one noticed it up until now," Vanderford told The Associated Press after being awoken at his San Francisco apartment early Saturday and informed that much of the world was suddenly under the impression he had been decapitated. Federal Bureau of Investigation agents interviewed Vanderford Saturday morning and an investigation has been opened, said FBI (news - web sites) spokeswoman LaRae Quy. She said the agency initially became involved while trying to verify whether anyone had, in fact, been beheaded. "We are collecting all the facts at this point in this process and we will pursue any and all legal avenues," Quy said, adding that it would be up to the U.S. Attorney to determine what, if any, charges are filed. More.. Now thats just GOLD.
Special K Posted August 8, 2004 Report Posted August 8, 2004 No, it's trivialising the death of good people. I understand the point, but it's moot seeing as REAL fucking inhumans are REALLY executing REAL people. Sure there could be some faked videos, but at this point, is that even a point for discussion? Nick Berg is still dead, and unless every video turns out to be a hoax, who the fuck cares?
Guest JMA Posted August 9, 2004 Report Posted August 9, 2004 Edit: Reading the full article, I see what his motives were. Still, this whole thing just turns my stomach.
Downhome Posted August 9, 2004 Report Posted August 9, 2004 His motives were fucked up, and he should be punished as much as possible. In the day and age that we lived in, there should be no excuse for a bloody twat of a moron trying to "make a point", making the FBI open up an investigation, when their time could be used more wisely, going after the real guys who do this type of thing, or whatever else. He should be charged, I don't know what with though, if for nothing else than tying up members of the FBI.
MarvinisaLunatic Posted August 9, 2004 Author Report Posted August 9, 2004 I dont think theres anything that they have against him to charge him with. Its only a crime to fake your death if you try to capitalize on it by skipping the country and avoiding paying taxes or something like that. Which is what I found so odd about this. Most people who would go to such trouble to fake the video would also probably be capitalizing on it.
Vyce Posted August 9, 2004 Report Posted August 9, 2004 Some people in this life just deserve to be beaten mercilessly with a sack of doorknobs. This guy is one of those people. And I eagerly volunteer to be the one swinging the sack.

And I eagerly volunteer to be the one swinging the sack. Personally, I prefer to use a sack of hammers, but otherwise, beat away.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted August 9, 2004 Report Posted August 9, 2004 The only thing he's guilty of is bad taste.
Guest MikeSC Posted August 9, 2004 Report Posted August 9, 2004 The only thing he's guilty of is bad taste. Did you see the video? His acting was criminal. -=Mike
lomasmoney Posted August 10, 2004 Report Posted August 10, 2004 it's really stupid but since you can't really charge the guy with a crime, this whole story will dissapear in a few days
