EVIL~! alkeiper Posted August 14, 2004 Author Report Posted August 14, 2004 I think the problem with basketball is simply that the international game has caught up. Even when we put amateurs on the floor before 1992, we were 75-2.
Kahran Ramsus Posted August 14, 2004 Report Posted August 14, 2004 Freestyle ends on the 29th I believe.
Kahran Ramsus Posted August 14, 2004 Report Posted August 14, 2004 I missed it earlier due to work so I'm watching the tape now (CBC version of course). I never understood why American coverage is so crummy. American networks want women to watch, and women don't like sports. Therefore we get lots of Dateline-esqe human interest stories about the athletes, and gymnastics. Hmm...in Canada they do. That still doesn't explain the lack of live coverage though.
TheDevilAndGodAreRagingInsideMe Posted August 14, 2004 Report Posted August 14, 2004 Who's on the American baseball team?
Guest Redhawk Posted August 14, 2004 Report Posted August 14, 2004 USA Baseball didn't qualify for the Games.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted August 14, 2004 Author Report Posted August 14, 2004 Essentially, the qualifying tournament was single elimination, which is a TERRIBLE idea for a sport where the worst team in MLB history still won 25% of their games.
Guest Vitamin X Posted August 14, 2004 Report Posted August 14, 2004 Abner Doubleday rolls in his grave.
Art Sandusky Posted August 14, 2004 Report Posted August 14, 2004 I guess we forgot that the Olympics are for the absolute, very best of everything.
Hogan Made Wrestling Posted August 15, 2004 Report Posted August 15, 2004 Abner Doubleday rolls in his grave. I don't see why he would, seeing as how the story about him inventing baseball is basically fiction invented by Spalding, and there are far more legitimate claims to that distinction.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted August 15, 2004 Author Report Posted August 15, 2004 The point is that baseball is a sport ill-suited for single game playoffs. A best-of-three series is more suitable.
Kahran Ramsus Posted August 15, 2004 Report Posted August 15, 2004 The point is that baseball is a sport ill-suited for single game playoffs. A best-of-three series is more suitable. Except that I believe they have time issues to deal with. It is unfortunate, but that's the way it is.
Art Sandusky Posted August 15, 2004 Report Posted August 15, 2004 And you have to be absolutely perfect to be the best out of six billion people. There's no room for a team that loses even one game.
Jobber of the Week Posted August 15, 2004 Report Posted August 15, 2004 I'm suprised. Not that the USA team isn't qualified, but that it doesn't have something to do with steroids and the fact that Selig is as blind as Vince McMahon when it comes to them.
Guest bigm350 Posted August 15, 2004 Report Posted August 15, 2004 Will the US get a medal in basketball? I'm not too confident; well, maybe a Bronze.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted August 15, 2004 Author Report Posted August 15, 2004 And you have to be absolutely perfect to be the best out of six billion people. There's no room for a team that loses even one game. If you let the teams play a few more games, EVERY team would lose. The US losing to Mexico does NOT mean Mexico is a better team. Play that game ten times, and the US wins seven. Given the nature of chance in baseball, a single game is a ridiculous assessment of talent. All the single elimination format does is let inferior teams into the Olympics over superior teams.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted August 15, 2004 Author Report Posted August 15, 2004 Will the US get a medal in basketball? I'm not too confident; well, maybe a Bronze. Yes, they will get a medal.
Guest Vitamin X Posted August 15, 2004 Report Posted August 15, 2004 HIGHLY doubtful. They've been blown out by Puerto Rico and Italy now, and barely beat a team that didn't even qualify for the Olympics (Germany). This team isn't even just bad. They're the definition of complete utter sucktitude. Wait for them to play a real team like Serbia...
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted August 15, 2004 Author Report Posted August 15, 2004 We will see. My prediction looks bold at the moment, but I think they will get the hang of the international game as the tournament progresses.
