PROMO: The Joshi Dragon?

Recommended Posts

The lights are dim and there is incense in the air. Candace is resting on a large black leather recliner. As soft music flows from her Bose speakers Candace’s’ eyes begin to close. The moment is ruined as a knock resounds from her door.

“Please go away”, Candace mutters under her breathe as the door opens and Frisco and Lobo enter the room.

“What’s that smell”, Frisco barks as a sour expression comes over his face.

“What do you want?” Candace asks wearily.

Frisco sits on a chair in front of Candace’s desk. He tosses his breifcase to the floor which leads to a loud thump that further ruins the soft ambience Candace had so carefully prepared.

“Kid you did pretty good in there tonight” Frisco starts. “You got kind of lucky that Xavier fell for that fake injury thing you pulled.” As Candace turns her attention to Frisco his vocal tone changes. “If your going to rely on smoke and mirrors to win your matches you ain’t going to get too far here!”

Candace stirs in her seat realizing that Frisco’s rare positive comments were going to turn negative and fast.

“Most of the guys here don’t give a rat’s ass if you’re injured in a match. Hell if that was Van Siclen in there he’d laugh in your face if you got injured. You wrestled Nathan Xavier and he’s kind of a rookie. He’s also a nice guy which greatly helped your cause with that injury thing. You need to start relying less on that shit!”

Candace just closes her eyes and wishes she were somewhere else.

“About the only thing you did that was impressive was going after Xavier’s wife after the match. That sent a message you weren’t just messing around here. I liked that”

Candace smiled briefly pleased that Frisco would at least find one redeeming element in her match.

“Next week you have Jamie Drazon in a hard core match” Frisco stated in a matter-of-fact tone that somehow minimized the fact that Candace just drew a hard core match with a very well known opponent. As Frisco waited for Candace to process that little tidbit her eyes opened wide.

“Jamie Drazon?” She asked in amazement.

“There determined to make in hard for you”

Candace sits at the end of her chair. She appears traumatized at the announcement.

“If you’re nervous you should be”, Frisco exclaims as Lobo appears very absorbed in the conversation. While Lobo is not known to be a chatter box he is very capable of engaged in conversation and it clearly seems he is planning to talk very shortly.

“You know the rules in a hardcore match”, asks Frisco with great tension. “There are no rules. Weapons are legal, no count outs. No fucking DQ’s. Drazon can pin you anywhere or he can just make you suffer if he wants to—and he has a certified mean streak. He hates rookies and he especially hates you!”

Candace stands and walks by the window. She glances across her lawn and observes a few birds on her fence. They fly away as a part of Candace wishes she could go with them.

“I’ve got to go”, Frisco says as he picks up the briefcase. He turns to Lobo to tell him to come with him. Lobo motions to Frisco he’ll be there shortly. Frisco just shrugs his head and goes to the car. Once Frisco leaves Lobo turns his attention to Candace.

“What’s going on?” Lobo says sympathetically.

Candace turns to speak with the big man. Lobo has long been a trusted, near father figure to her and she always treasured their rare conversations. On this occasion the disappointment in Lobo’s voice is palpable. There is clearly a choice to be made here. On one hand Frisco is her manager and has brought her over from the New Japan Pro leagues to the S.W.F. While she enjoyed the high level of competition in Puroresu wrestling for New Japan the money was greater in the United States and foreign objects were used with much less regularity here. In her three matches thus far she had yet to taste her own blood which was regularity in Japan. Yet on the other hand it was painfully clear Frisco didn’t have any great emotional bond with her. To him she was just another disposable athlete and if anything happened to her all he needed to do was go back to Japan to find his next payday. Lobo was clearly not like that.

Lobo rarely talked. He was widely regarded as just another big lug who served as an out of ring enforcer. A lot of that came from the fact that Lobo was never much of a talker by nature; also he was from Sweden and English was not his native tongue. On the few occasions when Lobo did speak it was almost always to Candace who he had formed a strong emotional bond. He easily recognized that there was a lot of good in Candace and she was not a natural heel by any means. It was to Lobos dismay that Frisco was working tirelessly to transform her into the super Asian villain he always wanted. As

Lobo watched Candace over the last few weeks it was clear Frisco’s plan was working.

“Big match coming up” Candace said dismissively. “I must begin preparation”

Lobo shook his head as he walked to Candace. “Why did you attack that girl after the last match?”

Candace shrugged her shoulders and flashed an innocent smile. Her pretty Asian eyes would always thwart a lecture from Lobo. It would not work today.

“The last few weeks you’ve been doing a lot of stuff that is not like you. That thing with the mouse…”

“Fuck the mouse”, Candace shot back with a hint of genuine anger in her voice with started Lobo. “I got 200 letters from people about fucking mouse. Petta said they sue me!” Candace just shook her head in amazement. “In Japan I keep mouse traps in my house to kill mice. My cat hunts for mice all the time. What am I supposed to do if I see mouse in my house? Do I have to give it it own room?!”

Lobo could tell he was hitting a nerve with her, but pressed his case.

“It was cruel. To feed a mouse while taping it for television was a cruel thing to do. Sasha Edwards is not a wrestler; there was no need for you to attack her after the match!”

Candace slowly walked into her kitchen. After a brief delay she returned with two glasses of whiskey—a personal favorite of Lobo. She handed him one and drank the other.

“Sasha Edwards represents everything I hate about American wrestling”, Candace offered in a very serious tone. “I have wrestled since I was 14 years old. I have performed matches at the Korakuen hall, the Osaka Dome Sky Hall, and many other esteemed Asian facilities. I have wrestled for All Japan, New Japan, the LLPW,the GAEA Japan,JWP,Arision, neo Japan, I have spent years working to be the wrestler I am today. In my first three matches in the S.W.F. I have been booed every time I leave the ring. In Japan I spent eight years of blood, sweat and many tears to be a solid pro wrestler. Here they boo me like I a clown.”

Lobo is quiet as he takes a drink from his whiskey. His eyes remain focused on Candace.

“Sasha Edwars not a wrestler” Candace continues as her English betrays her once more. “She walks to ring with Nathan Xavier and the crowd cheer her. They love Sasha Edwards. So when I win I make it a point to make an example of her. They hate me they hate me even more. I care no more!”

Lobo finishes his drink and puts the glass on the table.

“You are not the person Frisco is trying to turn you into!” Lobo interrupts. “How can you live with doing this stuff?”

Candace raises her eyes to Lobo. “There is a lot I have learned to live with.” As she pauses she goes to the door and opens it for Lobo. “I had to make a choice. To fight with great honor in Japan, or to come to the United States for great money. I choose the money.”

Lobo drops his eyes to the ground as he turns to leave.

“Be careful in that match against Drazon.” Lobo cautioned. “He is a very good wrestler, and also he is very good with weapons”

Candace considered her options for a moment. “You will see.”

“No. I won’t be there” Lobo replied as he turned and walked away.

Guest Suicide King

Come on now people. Maybe this isn't an indepth storyline promo, but it does advance the character. Give it some love.

*gives it love*

Yeah. I actually missed this first time around. Interested as to where this is going and the emotional dillemas help to create a new side(s) to Candace's character.

Plus there's certainly no harm in playing up the Japan/America differences in terms of wrestling and their legacies. Something that I can't remember being done in-depth here.

I say again, a sexy Japanese chick would get over INSTANTLY as a face, but we'd need to see a bit more of her less self-assured side in the ring first.
