Mole 0 Report post Posted August 17, 2004 I thought AVP was going to do better than $38 million because it made $16 million on Friday. I guess the reviews and word of mouth didn't help at all. It will drop down atleast to #4 next week. For as much ad time as Open Water gets you'd think they would have put it on more screens. Garden State too. It was just in limted release this week. Next week it opens in more than 2,200 theaters, so it should do pretty well. A Cinderella Story fell because it was taken off a lot of screens for Princess Diaries 2, which also monopolised it's young girl audience. Yeah it dropped 860 screens. It has just about broken even, budget was $19 million and marketing was $30 million. I am sure DVD sales will put it over the top though. Duff is still a better draw though. Corey_Lazarus 0 Report post Posted August 17, 2004 Open Water prolly didn't do so well because it looks like it's fucking boring. Two people in the water for 90 minutes? Hooray. AVP so deserves to be #1...and then fall off the charts next week.
bob_barron 0 Report post Posted August 17, 2004 I have a hard team believing the marketing budget for ACS was $30 million. BoxOfficeMojo said that's just an average and it's something they figure out. The movie wasn't on TV screens every 5 seconds like other big summer blockbusters. I think that's just an estimate Mojo came up with by comparing to other movies. The movie will make a healthy profit, especially when you factor in the soundtrack sales and I'm sure it will do okay worldwide. And the movie will make a killing on DVD. A Cinderella Story made more then any other Duff's starring vehicles and it had the most staying power of either them. 40% of Lizzie McGuire's gross was done in it's opening weekend, while for Agent Cody Banks it was 29%. A Cinderella Story's number is 27.6 The movie has made 49.3 million compared to only 29.3 for Confessions. ACS also had more staying power then Confessions did. I think Raise Your Voice could be the sleeper hit of the fall. It has a pretty good trailer and it's Hilary's first ever dramatic role. Even though I'm sketchy on the director, it has a great cast (John Corbett, Rita Wilson) and should do as well as ACS. Ashlee Simpson is in it too which will help. They just need to put her in the trailer.
bob_barron 0 Report post Posted August 17, 2004 Open Water prolly didn't do so well because it looks like it's fucking boring. Two people in the water for 90 minutes? Hooray. Open Water has late summer sleeper hit ALL over it. The film did very well at Sundance and has been packing them in in it's limited run in NYC. It also had a tie-in with the Discovery Channel to give it more exposure. It's being compared to Blair Witch.
starvenger 0 Report post Posted August 17, 2004 Glad to see Bourne still doing well So am I. I saw it this weekend, and it was a pretty good flick. Almost makes me want to read the book it has nothing in common with except the title... ...and it's nice to see that Harold and Kumar might eke out $20 mil... I will defiently be there, probably not opening weekend though.
AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted August 17, 2004 AVP being number 1 isn't surprising. However, it's an extremely underwhelming number one. Gee, I wonder how much it made if they don't count the free passes?
Corey_Lazarus 0 Report post Posted August 17, 2004 Open Water has late summer sleeper hit ALL over it. The film did very well at Sundance and has been packing them in in it's limited run in NYC. So? A few Sundance movies suck royal balls. Just because a bunch of pretentious pricks like it, doesn't mean it's actually a good movie. I mean, just look at Titanic. Critics loved it, but it's still just a stupid fucking movie with little meaning. It also had a tie-in with the Discovery Channel to give it more exposure. It's being compared to Blair Witch. I don't think being compared to one of the biggest let-down's for horror fans EVER should be a positive thing...

I will defiently be there, probably not opening weekend though. Ashlee plays Hilary's best friend. I think she's her best friend pre-music camp since she wasn't in the trailer. The movie's competition is Shark Tale (which looks terrible) and Taxi. (ditto) The trailer is at- www.raiseyourvoicemovie.com Oliver James is one lucky bastard So? A few Sundance movies suck royal balls. Just because a bunch of pretentious pricks like it, doesn't mean it's actually a good movie. I mean, just look at Titanic. Critics loved it, but it's still just a stupid fucking movie with little meaning. It has a 75% rating at Rotten Tomatoes which is really good. ReelViews and Ebert both really liked it. I've heard the film does a great job at creating tension but whethet you will like it or not really depends on the dialogue since the film is very talk-driven. I don't think being compared to one of the biggest let-down's for horror fans EVER should be a positive thing... Blair Witch did gross 100 million plus. I wonder what will be #1 next week. A v. P is going to fall fast and hard. Without a Paddle won't open to too much. I think Exorcist will do it on name brand alone but then also heavily drop. Open Water only played at 55 theatres, giving it an average gross of over $16000, which was the best average number this weekend of any non-IMAX movie. I don't think you can use free passes the first 10 days.

Mole 0 Report post Posted August 17, 2004 I always thought you couldn't use them because you can't use gift certificates until the movie has been out for 10 days. So I thought it was the same with free passes.
Guest NaturalBornThriller4:20 Report post Posted August 17, 2004 While a huge drop will probably happen, A V P will probably stay at #1 next week. Opening Friday: "Exorcist: The Beginning" (Stellan Skarsgaard) "Without A Paddle" (Seth Green, Matthew Lillard) I can't see neither one of them doing much business. Mole 0 Report post Posted August 17, 2004 While a huge drop will probably happen, A V P will probably stay at #1 next week. Opening Friday: "Exorcist: The Beginning" (Stellan Skarsgaard) "Without A Paddle" (Seth Green, Matthew Lillard) I can't see neither one of them doing much business. Exorcist: The Beginning not doing much business? The orginal made $232 million and is considered one of the scariest movies of all time. This one looks pretty freaky and has a huge fan base behind it. Exorcist: The Beginning will make atleast $25 million next week and I can't see AVP doing those numbers at all.
Guest NaturalBornThriller4:20 Report post Posted August 17, 2004 Exorcist: The Beginning doing $25 million ? I HIGHLY doubt it. And like I said I expect a HUGE drop from A V P next week. At least, 50 to even 60% But, we'll see...
Mole 0 Report post Posted August 17, 2004 Why can't Exorcist: The Beginning make $25 million? And you forgot about Open Water being released nation wide. I wouldn't be surprised to see that opening 2, even 1. The movie is getting good reviews (75% Fresh Rating at Rotten Tomatoes) and had the highest per-screen-average this week ($16,268). AVP won't be #1 again. No way, no how.
Guest El Satanico Report post Posted August 17, 2004 I don't think Exorcist will do that well. A large portion of it's target audience are likely still pissed off by the director switch and total re-do business. Mainly pissed because of who the new director is and WBs desire for it not to be too psychological. Basically WB wants more pea soup and less thinking. I mean honestly who would want to watch a psychological Exorcist film...when we could have a movie filled with pea soup and jump scenes.
Mole 0 Report post Posted August 17, 2004 That's true, I did forget about the director switch. Wasn't the reason because the orginal director wanted it to be a psychological movie and WB wanted blood and guts? But I am sticking with my prediction that AVP won't be #1 next week. Anyway, I honestly don't give a crap if A V P remains #1, I just know that the drop will probably be towards 60% How many theatres is Open Water being expanded to ? 2GOLD 0 Report post Posted August 17, 2004 I got the chance to talk to repeated people about OPEN WATER over the weekend at the Horrorfind con in Maryland and most of them agreed on one thing. That it is very very boring. I still want to see it, but the only horror style movie I care about right now is SAW. Exorcist isn't getting one damn dime of my money. cabbageboy 0 Report post Posted August 17, 2004 Exorcist might have made big money but that was 1973. There have been some other sequels since and nobody has given a shit.
