Can someone give me a run down on..

:headbang:

I can give a little from WWF.

Austin won the title at WM 14 from HBK. HBK took some time off after that to heal his back. The Rock was the IC Champ, The New Age Outlawz were tag champs.

Austin and McMahon were supposed to have a match for the title on Raw two weeks after WM 14. Instead, Dude Love showed up and interfered before the match got going. I can't remember the name of the April PPV, but Dude Love beat Austin by DQ.

In May, Dude and Austin continued feuding, with Austin winning their match at Over The Edge by pinfall, despite McMahon as guest referee, Pat Patterson as guest ring announcer, and Gerry Brisco as guest timekeeper.

In June, Ken Shamrock won the King of the Ring by beating The Rock in the finals. Kane won the title from Austin at KOTR in a first blood match, after interference from Foley, who had just been beaten by The Undertaker in Hell in a Cell. Austin won the title back the following night on Raw.

In July, I don't remember exactly how, but Kane and Mankind won the tag titles. Austin and Undertaker won the titles at the July PPV which the name escapes me. Also, The Rock drew Triple H in an excellent two of three falls match for the IC Title.

In August, it started to look like Kane and Undertaker were in cahoots, after a 4 way tag dance on Raw for the titles, an excellent match, featuring the New Age Outlawz, The Rock and DLo Brown(subbing for Owen Hart, who Ken Shamrock attacked before the match) Austin/Taker, and Kane/Mankind, who won back the titles.

At Summerslam, it was clear that Taker/Kane were in cahoots, although not yet officially revealed. During Taker's title match with Austin, Kane tried to interfere for UT, but he'd have none of it. Austin won cleanly. Also, Kane didn't show up for the tag title match with him and Mankind vs. the Outlawz. The Outlawz won what became a handicap match, and Kane showed up afterwards and beat up Foley.

Triple H won a mediocre ladder match against the Rock for the IC title.

I'll do more details later on some of the lesser feuds, even though they were basically hit or miss. Does anyone remember how great it was when DLo was the European champ? First, his brilliant, "I'm The Champion of Europe!" and huge smile, and coming out from a new European City each week? And to add to the miss category, remember when Val Venis had his dong cut off by Kaientai, or so we thought. It turns out he hadn't, when yes, the man, the myth, the legend, John Bobbit appeared next week on Raw and Venis revealed that he was still, um, hanging.

HBK taking some time off is an understatement. He retired and didn't wreslte again (save one very gimmicked match in TWA in 2000). He also had back surgery.

Kane and Mankind beat the NAO on RAW in July '98 in NJ(I was there and at SummerSlam in MSG that year)

The April PPV was Unforgiven that year.

I didn't like the Rock/Triple H 2/3 falls and thought the ladder match was really, really good (like ****'s good) but to each their own.

The ladder match also essentially started the faux-Rock face turn as the MSG crowd (myself included) went bonkers for him. Triple H was also injured in the match and unable to return until December '98.

Edge was introduced around July/August '98, Christian popped up in October and the Brood was born.

Also, WWF finally ended the 82 week Nitro winning streak in the ratings in April of that year and you could feel the momentum in the war shifting.

I think he meant took some time off TV.

After WrestleMania, we didn't see Shawn until he made a surprise appearance at the July Raw from the Meadowlands (the show where Kane / Mankind won the tag belts). I think putting him back on Raw had something to do with Goldberg winning the title on Nitro the week before and Nitro beating Raw in the ratings.

After that point, Shawn made sporadic appearances - even guest commentating on the Heat preceeding Summer Slam. He finally turned heel on DX in November during an X-Pac / Rock match, IIRC.

In September, Undertaker, Kane, and Steve Austin fought for the title in a 3 way dance at Breakdown, in my hometown of Hamilton, Ontario. Being in cahoots, neither could figure out how to finish the match(according to story, it wasn't bad wrestling) and a double pin resulted, both pinned Austin.

Ken Shamrock won an excellent 3 way dance at Breakdown over The Rock and Foley to take the reigns of the Inercontinental title for the hurt HHH.

Also, one of the most irritating feuds ever began, when, despite some creativity in the ring from Kai en Tai, they continually fought some combination of The Oddities, who, even with Sable, had a gimmick that wore pretty thin. Adding to their woes were the incredibly annoying Insane Clown Posse.

In October, one of my all time favourite Raw moments took place, when, thanks to awful timing, Steve Austin drove a zamboni to the ring during a Raw from Detroit Rock City and ruined the World Title Ceremony, where Mr. McMahon would name the new champion out of The Undertaker and Kane. As a result, McMahon somehow managed to call both of Taker and Kane handicapped, resulting in a great looking beating to the boss. As McMahon was being carted to the hospital, Mankind followed him in the ambulance and silliness ensued, including a visit from Austin and a beating with a bedpan, and Mankind trying to cheer up McMahon with a sock puppet.

Taker and Kane fought at Judgement Day with Austin barred from the building. Should he interfere, he would be fired. Which he did, resulting in a brilliant line from McMahon. "Stone Cold, Fuck You, You're FIRED!" The match went to a no contest, setting up a single elimination tournament at Survivor Series for the title.

Austin would indeed return, when, a triumphantly reacting McMahon was upstaged by his son Shane, who said he re-signed Stone Cold and basically told off Vince in a 28, yes, 28 minute segment, which was at least 18 minutes too long.

McMahon continued to have Foley as his replacement son instead of Shane. Austin would face Vince's bodyguard, the Boss Man at Survivor Series. The bracket was set up so Undertaker and Kane would fight in the second round. Mankind fought a mystery opponent, who most thought would be HBK, but turned out to be Duane Gill. Austin, Mankind, The Rock, and someone who I forget faced off in the final four. It looked like Austin had Mankind beat, but Shane McMahon refused to count, revealed he was siding with his dad the whole time, and Mankind got into the finals. Suffice to say, The Rock would get to the finals as well. It turns out the McMahons didn't like Foley as well, as an exact replica of 97 SS finish took place. I won't dwell, since I'm a Hart mark, but The Rock won the gold.

December was a kind of bland back and forth month between Foley and The Rock, though the highlight of the month was, after an Empty Arena Match at Rock Bottom, Foley did win the title on Raw in a alleged impromptu match. Clearly, it was not impromptu, as Nitro revealed the Foley would indeed win the title. Even so, WCW was on the way down.

After a match between Gangrel and Kane, Gangrel and Christian attacked Kane, resulting in Edge coming ringside, and, surprisingly, helping Christian and Gangrel, resulting in the Brood, one of my all time favourite stables, and definitely the coolest ring entrance ever.

I don't remember the IC title or Tag Titles at all, so I can't help but think it wasnt very good.

Wasn't Austin the guest referee for that match, and if he didn't count to 3 he would be fired?

He was the special ref, and Vince said "screw you", not "fuck you".

Although technically, Vince said he'd fire Austin if didn't raise the winner's hand, and Austin had declared himself the winner and raised his arm, so he never should have been fired in the first place.

I'm seriously surprised Russo didn't actually use that reasoning.

I actually really like the whole storyline that set up Rock becoming the "Corporate champ" in November of 1998. Survivor Series 98 might have a lot of shitty matches, but storyline wise it's pretty cool, especially with the Shane heel turn.
