Rob E Dangerously Posted September 20, 2004 Report Posted September 20, 2004 Here in Missouri, we don't get that stuff.. but.. here's the site: http://nationalatlas.gov/congdistprint.html All credit to South Carolina for making their District 1 less crazy. The book I have with 90s districts makes it look like a mushroom going inland from Charleston to Berkeley county and on the coast. The current district looks more sane. The all stars of weird: Alabama-6: Arizona-2: California-46: Georgia-8: Georgia-11: Illinois-4: (this has to be illegal) Louisiana-2: Maryland-2: Maryland-3: North Carolina-3: North Carolina-12: I'm sure i'm ignoring some all-stars in Texas.. note to district drawers: it's possible to make a district which doesn't look like an LSD trip, this one's to you Georgia!
Styles Posted September 20, 2004 Report Posted September 20, 2004 Interesting that Maryland is mentioned twice. My district (the 8th) was recently gerrymandered to include a good chunk of our neighboring county, which is heavily Democratic and minority before the 02 election, which led to the 8 term Republican Congresswoman (almost liberal, and very popular in the disctrict obviously) being unseated by a generally poor candidate who had a D next to his name because the new part of the disctrict wasn't familiar with her. It basically has eliminated the chances for any Republican being elected (which sucks because I really like the candidate this year).
Rob E Dangerously Posted September 20, 2004 Author Report Posted September 20, 2004 Actually.. I eliminated Maryland's 8th district due to the fact that I had like 14 districts at first
teke184 Posted September 20, 2004 Report Posted September 20, 2004 If you want to see a gerrymandered district, see if you can find the Louisiana 4th District from the mid-90s. It was shaped like a "Z" and stretched from Shreveport to Monroe to Baton Rouge to Bogalusa. It was around that time that Cleo Fields (D-Baton Rouge) began to be referred to as "Zorro" because the district was gerrymandered to give him a seat. As for William Jefferson's 2nd District, it's a tradeoff. The state would get sued if there was no majority black district, so William Jefferson gets an eternal seat because Orleans Parish itself has around the number of people needed for a Congressional district (roughly 700,000) and the city of New Orleans itself is like 90% black. (Most white people have moved to the suburbs in places such as Jefferson Parish and St. Bernard Parish.)
Rob E Dangerously Posted September 20, 2004 Author Report Posted September 20, 2004 I'm still sorta conflicted on the idea of a "majority black" district.. sure, it's nice.. but it also probably doesn't help the Democratic party by putting a heavily Democratic group in just one district. Louisiana is on to something with having elections in Saturday. That's something the rest of this country should think about trying
Stephen Joseph Posted September 20, 2004 Report Posted September 20, 2004 They fight about it every time this comes up. Georgia, by far
Slayer Posted September 20, 2004 Report Posted September 20, 2004 Isn't this the same district that was declared illegal by...whoever decides these things are illegal?
kkktookmybabyaway Posted September 20, 2004 Report Posted September 20, 2004 Neat little Web site. Here's the district that surrounds me. And here's the one I'm in (at least I think so...)
Slayer Posted September 20, 2004 Report Posted September 20, 2004 I'm glad I live in a fairly normal looking district
kkktookmybabyaway Posted September 20, 2004 Report Posted September 20, 2004 Well you all vote one way anyway, so what's the big deal?...
DerangedHermit Posted September 20, 2004 Report Posted September 20, 2004 The one I vote in: This one is screwed up a little bit...
Red Baron Posted September 20, 2004 Report Posted September 20, 2004 Even though I don't live in USA, this would be the area closest to me, well Buffalo is, but I don't like Buffalo
The Czech Republic Posted September 20, 2004 Report Posted September 20, 2004 Illinois-4: (this has to be illegal) This is Chicago we're talking about, it only gets worse in terms of illegality.
therealworldschampion Posted September 20, 2004 Report Posted September 20, 2004 Here's my district, still the same even after I moved to the eastern side of the state:
