The hitting is there and they are going to need a bullpen in a division with the Yankees and Red Sox. Get some starters and sure up the bullpen and they are in business. And Lee probably just got his rear fired tonight. Too bad, I didn't think he did that badly considering the pitching staff he was working with.

He's sucked the last two outings, and the last thing you want his a rookie picher with control problems in the post-season. Kyle Lohse also has no business being on the roster. Good game by Jason Kubel though.

The key sign to look for is if he has particular problems throwing breaking pitches, since those are more likely to lead to arm strain. Mulder's big problem these days is that he can't seem to strike out batters. But I don't know anything extra about Mulder, to be honest.

In other news The Giants are 1 1/2 games behind LA, which means the Cubs are 2 games behind the Dodgers if they fall into the Wildcard hunt. So if the Dodgers slide late, the Giants and the Cubs might sneak in and the Dodgers would be out. I like the Wildcard, it's given me a reason to care about late season baseball.

Hideo Nomo got demoted to the bullpen, they're blowing games to Colorado, and their sucky ways are about to let the Giants fall ass-backwards not just into the Wild Card, but the whole damn NL West. Houston's gotta kick some ass tonight to keep the Giants at bay and bump the Cubs up into the Wild Card lead. What are the Dodgers really doing so wrong? What are they missing?

They're doing exactly what I knew they were going to do, crash back down to reality. The Dodgers were an overachieving team that played the best they possibly could. They have no dominate or credible starting pitching. Jeff Weaver and Jose F'N Lima are there most consistent starters. But now Lima is injured and there only hope is Brad Penny coming off the DL after missing over a month.

If they can get to the ninth with the lead then they are good, but they have had problems with that as well. But I don't count them dead just yet. If they keep losing, well then they are done.

No one is really talking about it (well ok I mentioned it briefly in a previous thread), but they are far from a lock to get to the post season. I think they still have about 6 games against the Giants and right now SF is on fire. Astros are just 2 behind in the WC right now, aren't they? Oswalt probably wins tonight, but who knows?

In July they were in the middle of having a pretty mediocre season, and I simply wrote them off (they were barely around the record of a .500 %). All of a sudden, they rocket back up with like 11 wins in 12 or 13 games, and became contenders again.

The Astros are 27-8 over their last 35 games, which is a fabulous run no matter which way you look at it. That said, they MUST win these next two games with the Giants. Anything less than that and they would be 2 (or 4, if they get swept) games back of two teams with only 9 left to play and no control over the teams they'd be chasing. That would likely be too steep a hill to climb. Something I've been wondering about since this last weekend: why didn't Houston adjust their pitching rotation to get Clemens on the mound for the Giants' series? Why use him against the Brewers, a team you should be able to beat without him? Your whole season rides on this Giants' series and you go to war without your best pitcher?? It doesn't make sense to me.

And everyone who knows the stories of Dusty overusing pitchers, he said in the paper today he really needs a complete game out of Big Z. And if the Giants sweep the Astros and the Padres sweep the Dodgers and the Cubs sweep the Pirates, I could almost guarantee the wildcard coming to the northside.

I know his record isn't entirely his fault, but he's really sputtered out in the second half, regardless of run support. Aside from Estes, he had been the weakest link in the Cubs' regular starting rotation for the last two years. That's not really a knock on him, but it shows how much depth they've got in their rotation. This means it's not so vital that he be kept around, especially since he'll be looking for some serious cash next season. Have fun with him, Yanks.
