JoeDirt 0 Report post Posted September 23, 2004 We've got a lot of stuff here. Unforgiven PPVs, the first RAW ever on TNN, IYH #3, the great HBK/Foley match at Mind Games, One Night Only, Flair and Heenan appearing on the Funeral Parlor and the Barber Shop, and much more. I put in both TV tapings of stuff that aired during this week (though may have been taped earlier) as well as major house shows, in places like MSG, Philly, Chicago, Montreal, etc. I find these topics always generate some good conversation. Yeah, that's a pretty cool dark match the fans got to see. Surprised it was never done on PPV. And hell, why not add Undertaker to the Survivor Series 97 main event, put the title on him instead of Shawn, and then give HBK the title at the December IYH? Anyways I'm getting ahead of myself. JoeDirt 0 Report post Posted September 24, 2004 Big John Studd (sub. for Jesse Ventura) defeated WWF World Champion Hulk Hogan via count-out; Bobby Heenan made his debut during the match Was that an odd match result for the time?
cawthon777 0 Report post Posted September 24, 2004 It was the norm, actually. Hogan and the heel would usually trade wins via technicality which would set up the third month's cage, lumberjack, etc match. The same held true for Sammartino and Backlund's title runs. It was standard booking for the WWF.
Hunter's Torn Quad 0 Report post Posted September 25, 2004 WWF @ New York City, NY - Madison Square Garden Randy Savage pinned WWF IC Champion the Honkytonk Man in a non-title match This finish stuck out, because the card was televised, and in his first shoot with RF Honky said he had an agreement with Vince that he wouldn't do jobs on TV. As for the Studd over Hogan result, cawthon777 is correct in that it was the standard booking pattern for the WWF Champion, even going back to Sammartino and Backlund. I would just add that it didn't happen with every heel challenger, just the ones that were over enough to warrant a three-match program with Hogan. With weaker challengers, Hogan et all would win the first match decisively, and then go on to the next contender. The typical three-match program would see the heel or the champion win the first match by count-out, the champion win the second by a stoppage or maybe a DQ, before the champion got the clean pinfall win in the blowoff. The only exceptions to the clean pinfall ending of the final match that I recall offhand, were with The Sheik and Mil Mascaras, which were for obvious reasons. MillenniumMan831 0 Report post Posted September 25, 2004 And a lot of times too the stipulation was added that if the champ is CO'd/DQ'd, he loses the title . . . I know this was the case for Hogan/Studd in 84 and Savage/Andre in 88. I'm sure there are more examples though.
