GOP mailing claims Democratic candidate, an Iraq vet, 'weakening' terror war

NORFOLK, Va. -- A state Republican Party mailing accuses Democratic congressional candidate David Ashe--a Marine Corps veteran who served in Iraq--of "weakening the war on terror" by supporting John Kerry.

A flier sent on behalf of his Republican opponent, Thelma Drake, says Ashe and the Democratic presidential candidate are "two peas in a pod" on "issues like higher taxes, abortion on demand and the war on terror."

Drake, a five-term House of Delegates member from Norfolk, and Ashe, a political newcomer, are seeking to succeed Rep. Ed Schrock in the 2nd Congressional District. Schrock dropped his bid for a third term after a Web site reported that he had used a gay telephone dating service to solicit men for sex.

The Republican mailing depicts the faces of Kerry and Ashe sticking out of a pea pod.

Under the heading "weakening the war on terror," the flier says "Democrat David Ashe is working hard to make John Kerry the commander in chief of our armed forces." Then it accuses Kerry of wavering in his positions on Iraq, of opposing money to pay for the war and of opposing better pay for troops.

The Republican Party of Virginia has never questioned Ashe's military service, party spokesman Shawn M. Smith said Monday.

The mailing is about Ashe building "his campaign around Kerry's failed liberal policies," Smith said.

"John Kerry and David Ashe both have a credibility problem with Virginia voters on important issues like national security and taxes," Smith said.

Reporters pressed Drake on whether she supported the mailing after she appeared with Ashe at a breakfast event Monday. She noted that it came from the state GOP, not her campaign.

"I support telling Republicans, telling the public, who David Ashe is and who he supports in regards to our president, and that's John Kerry," Drake added. "And I think John Kerry's positions are very clear--that he doesn't support President Bush's view, and my view, of how critical it is that we win this war on terror and that we go in and show other nations that we are not going to sit over here and let them come and attack us."

During their appearance at a meeting of the Citizen Coalition for Good Government, Drake had made a point of thanking Ashe for his military service.

Ashe called the flier an example of "low common denominator politics."

"When I was walking around Iraq wearing 25 pounds of body armor, I thought I was pretty good on the war in Iraq," Ashe said.

A lawyer who had been in the Marines, Ashe was recalled to active duty after the Sept. 11 attacks to serve in Kuwait and Iraq.

Damn that Kerry.. weakening the War on Terror like that

What's the big deal? My guess is that he will weaken it just to please his anti-war base if anything, but since its hard to tell what his position is on ANYTHING its not easy to ultimately call one way or the other.

Considering Kerry wants to give nuclear fuel to IRAN, I think anyone who supports him and his preposterous ideas is weakening the war on terror.

So, wait...people that have probably never served in the military are saying that a VETERAN of Iraq doesn't know what the war means?

...the fuck?

Honestly, military service does not mean you have leadership ability.

Grant had military leadership and look what a great president he was...

The sad thing is that, legitimately, Grant was PERSONALLY a very moral, upstanding man.

He was just surrounded by some damned unscrupulous folks.

Remember, Grant died broke. He did for a reason.

The silly part of all this is that if Kerry gets in it'll probably have a chill effect on terrorism in general. Bush is HATED overseas, especially in the Middle East (hell his dad sent troops there, now he has). Kerry being elected would be a sort of bizarre, unintended peace offering saying "Hey, we got rid of the guy you hate...now leave us the fuck alone." If Kerry gets in and we are attacked again, I'll gladly eat crow on this, but personally I think if he gets in the War on Terror will chill over time.
