Starrcade 1997

December 28, 1997 in Washington, D.C.

MCI Center drawing 17,500 ($543,000)

Shown live on PPV (1.9)

-WCW Cruiserweight Champ Eddie Guerrero pinned Dean Malenko (14:57).

-Randy Savage, Scott Norton, & Vincent beat Ray Traylor, Rick & Scott Steiner (11:06) when Savage pinned Scott.

-Bill Goldberg pinned Steve McMichael (5:59).

-Saturn beat Chris Benoit (10:50) via submission in a "no DQ" match.

-Buff Bagwell pinned Lex Luger (16:36).

-Diamond Dallas Page pinned Curt Hennig (10:52) to win the WCW US Title.

-Larry Zbysko (WCW) beat Eric Bischoff (NOW) (11:12) via DQ in a match for control of Monday Nitro. Bret Hart was the guest referee.

-Sting beat Hulk Hogan (12:54) via submission to win the WCW World Title.

This was going to be WCW's equivalent of WrestleMania 3. The card was stacked and well promted (Benoit finally gets Raven, Nash vs. The Giant, Flair vs. Hennig, Bret Hart debuts, and Hogan-Sting).  The Hogan-Sting match was just huge at the time. I ordered this ppv (my first from WCW) and really had high expectations...seriously, how could they fuck this one up?

Eddie and Dean didnt quite bring their ECW star-ratings, but a good match nonetheless. And then it just flys off on a down ward spiral...

Scott Hall comes out to do a crowd survey to replace the Nash-Giant match that was hyped for like 2 months. Giant comes out, but instead of a replacement match, he kicks Scotts ass and just leaves...

The 6 man tag sucked a monstercock...

Goldberg-Mongo was even worse...

Raven decides to not wrestle Benoit, so we get Perry Saturn in his place.  not nearly what anybody had paid for...

Bagwell-Luger was pukeworthy...

Ric Flair was replaced by DDP.  DDP-Hennig was insanely boring...

Bischoff-Zbszko tok the starratings into the negatives. It was expected to be bad but I kinda hoped thered be a modicum of entertainment value, but no...

And finally - Hollywood Hogan vs. Sting.  A match that had been building for over a year. A match so big it got WCW a 1.9 buyrate. The biggest wrestling match and event of 1997. The most anticipated match in a long, long time...

The match ends up being horribly booked, with Hogan getting most of the offense. The crowd, catatonic from the pathetic undercard, are kicked around like 17,500 dead horses. A fast count angle is actually done slow by Nick Patrick. The match doesnt even end cleanly.

Biggest disspointment ever, terrible matches all around, and the beginning of the end for WCW...when it could have cemented them as a huge #1.

Worst PPV Of All-Time.

I actually thought the biggest problem with Starrcade 97 was that the Nitro the next night was a MUCH better show.

Just to dogpile on WCW, I'll throw in Uncensored 99.

Match 1: Billy Kidman d. Mikey Whipreck (CW title)

Whipreck's unhyped debut is met with no reaction. He busts out some decent offense, but not enough to salvage the match. Kidman hits about 4 offensive moves over the course of 15 minutes and still somehow wins.

Match 2: Stevie Ray d. Vincent (Harlem street fight)

Just as bad as it sounds. 7 minutes of sloppy, heatless brawling including the WORST "heads colliding in the corner leading to unintentional lowblow" spot ever. Stevie wins with the slapjack and gains full control of the NWO Jobber stable.

Match 3: Kevin Nash d. Rey Mysterio

About like their Nitro match, except no excitement of Rey winning. It was pretty much a squash and wiped out the Rey/giant killer angle that had been built over a month. But hey, Nash let Rey save some heat with interferrence before the jackknife

Match 4: Jerry Flynn d. The Cat and Sonny Oono

Another one that doesn't need an explanation. Basic handicap formula until the extremely stupid ending. Sonny gets the unintentional tag, so you think Lynn would want to beat him up really bad, right? Wrong. Lynn just grabs Sonny and falls on him for the 3. No punches or kicks, just a pin.

Match 5: Hak d. Raven and Bam Bam Bigelow (No dq)

Basic weapons match. It had some funny moments, but you can only watch guys get hit with miscellaneous items for so long. 15 minutes definitely pushes the limit. Chastity turns on Raven for some unknown reason and costs him the match.

Match 6: Chris Benoit and Dean Malenko d. Curt Hennig and Barry Windham (Tag titles, lumberjacks w/straps)

4 good workers that just didn't really click in this match. I think the lumberjacks really threw off the flow. Heenan makes the idiotic comment that he would rather be hit by a bus than whipped by Meng. Arn's interferrence, which inexplicably went unnoticed by the heel lumberjacks, leads to the Horsemen winning. At least some good came out of this match.

Match 7: Saturn d. Chris Jericho (dog collar match)

Again, 2 good workers that just didn't work well together. Match was slow and boring. Saturn hits the DVD for the win. This was also at the height of the Saturn/crosdressing angle.

Match 8: Booker T d. Scott Steiner (TV title)

Another boring, generic match. Not the best effort between these two by any means.

Match 9: Ric Flair d. Hulk Hogan (World title, cage match, "first blood")

Despite being a first blood match, Flair gets busted open and the match continues for at least 10 minutes. Flair wins by pinfall in a FIRST BLOOD match. In retrospect, you can see that this is a double turn and the start of the Lil Naitch Charles Robinson character. But, damn, you certainly couldn't figure that out the first go around. Very confusing match, not redeemed in any way by quality. Halloween Havoc 94, it ain't.

In a nutshell, Ultimo Dragon beat Eddy Guerrero by submission for the CW Title. An almost total squash. Booker T pinned Disco Inferno for the World TV Title. Sting and Hogan had a better rematch for the World Title. A decent DDP v Mortis match for the US Title. Jericho v Hennig in a decent match.

Not to forget that it was Rick Martel's first match in WCW--that kicked off a pretty good 6 month run for the TV title overall.

Event: Bash at the Beach 1995

Date: July 16, 1995

Location: Huntington Beach, California

Arena: The Beach

Attendence: 9,500

United States Heavyweight Title Match: Sting pinned Meng (15:31) to retain the title....World Television Title Match: The Renegade pinned Paul Orndorff (6:12) to retain the title....Kamala pinned Jim Duggan (6:00)....Diamond Dallas Page pinned Dave Sullivan (5:04)....World Tag Team Title Match (Triangle Match): Harlem Heat (Booker T. and Stevie Ray) defeated The Nasty Boys (Brian Knobs and Jerry Sags) and Blue Bloods (Bobby Eaton and Steven Regal) (13:41) when Booker T pinned Regal to retain the tag team titles....Lifeguard Lumberjack Match: Randy Savage pinned Ric Flair (13:55) in a "lifeguard lumberjack" match....World Heavyweight Title Match (Steel Cage Match): Hulk Hogan defeated Big Van Vader (13:13) by leaving the cage to retain the title.

1) Sting vs Meng was easily forgetable, they never clicked in this encounter. To top that off it went 15 min.

2) You follow up that subpar match with a Renegade match. You know your in trouble when the crowd turns on the Renegade and stars cheering Paul Orndorff.

3) The show gets worse after this with an Kamala vs Jim Duggan & Dave Sullvan vs Diamond Dallas Page matches.

4) Harlem Heat vs Nasty Boys have never had a good match, thus wcw puts Regal & Eaton into the mix. This became a Triangle match and it was a clusterfuck from the start.

5) Flair vs Savage couldn't save this ppv.

6) Hogan vs Vader in the cage was horrid. At this point after jobbing to hogan twice on ppv, he was not motivated at all and it showed. It was your usual hogan match, heel dominates throughout then the babyface comes back and climbs out of the cage to win it.

Bash at the beach 95 is hands down the worst ppv of all time.

That's true, but since this was a free ppv. I would say at least half of the crowd had not seen wcw, and even they did not like the Renegade.

I'd imagine the less you knew about wrestling, the less you'd like Renegade.

-=Mike

...By the same token, the more you knew, the less you'd like as well. Apparently, any amount of knowledge of the biz = Renegade hate...

This wasn't one of the worst but the card was Bland and Boring with only two good matches and a decent one

BACKLASH 2003

Goldberg Vs The Rock - Boring

WWE Champion Brock Lesnar Vs John Cena - Decent

Triple H/Jericho/Flair Vs Booker T/Michaels/Nash - Ok

Big Show Vs Rey Mysterio - Entertaining

Rikishi Vs Sean O'Haire - sucked

World Tag Champs Kane/RVD Vs Dudley Boyz - Ok

WWE Tag Champs Team Angle Vs Los Guerreros - great match

Woman's Champ Trish Stratus Vs Jazz - sucked

The WWE Tag and Show/Mysterio were the only matches I enjoyed. everything else pretty much sucked.
