Serious Computer Problem

Recommended Posts

Guest theoldxpac

Yah this is pretty bad, last night my mum had the windows update thing come up on the screen asking to install service pack 2, so she clicked yes thinking it was a good thing. Now when you load up the system, the windows xp loading screen comes up, although the green lines which went along the middle of the screen are now blue. Anyway after that screen disappears, just before the screen where you can select which user you want to log on as, the computer resets itself.

We have another version of XP on the computer, which loads fine, its just that that version has a major virus as well, and thats the reason why we dont use that any more.

Any ideas if you can understand all of that, or am i completly buggered like i think i am? If so then i have lost at least 40GB of stuff, including some really important college work, letters and pictures.

Did you end up installing Service Pack 2? Also, are you using a pirated XP? Because I heard that if you install SP2 with a key that has been blacklisted from a pirated copy of XP, it won't let you log in...

SP2 is a colossal piece of shit. Don't install it. If you did, you just might be fucked. See if you can boot up in Safe Mode (hit F8 when you first see the "Starting Windows" screen) and uninstall it.

BTW, there's a pirated key that will allow you to download the service packs. Um, so I've heard...

Nah its a legit XP we brought back in 2001. My mum said she installed it, then restarted the computer as it instructed her to do. And safe mode doesnt work either.

Yep, there is, and I am evidence of it.

I changed my original key with a new keygen specifically made to generate valid SP2 keys. I installed it...no problems.

I heard all about the problems caused by downloading SP2, so yeah I didn't get it.

If Safe Mode doesn't work, then I doubt this will work, either, but you can try it. From the same F8 menu, select Last Known Good Configuration.

If that doesn't work, poke around in Microsoft's knowledgebases and see what they suggest for dealing with their shitty service packs.

I got SP2 and i like it, it works really well

it has a better firewall and it's own pop up blocker

but you probably do have a virus so try looking around in the Computers forum and find that thread with all the antivirus links and stuff in it

i had a really shitty virus last week too after getting my computer reformatted, my computer wuld automatically restart itself on a timer

Yeah, that virus was most likely Blaster. You need a patch for that.

no, that's what my local computer guy said too, but i ran the blaster tool from symantec and that wasnt it

it wasn't the wootbot worm either

some kind of new variant

anyways the computer guy fixed the problem and everything is running smooth
