SO AWESOME~!!! (Warning: A Real Life Story)

Today, I met the lead (well, currently, only) programmer of the Samurai Studios!

 

He's going to the same school as I am, brushing up on the business presentation stuff he'll have to do for his team's first game: New Horizons (you may or may not have heard of this game, its PC bound).

 

So I chatted up with him and all this and it was just so cool! I got to talk to him about his game, some of the features to expect, although the game has not been coded yet as they just got the game engine for New Horizons, so some of those features may not make it into the game. And talked about this and that of gaming.

 

I feel kinda silly now that I idolize game creators because when I said "you are doing New Horizons" I kinda was like giving the look that most anime characters do of 'no way, I'm in the presence of someone like so better than me' kinda expression. I was even called on it by fellow students.

 

Best part was, he said to send an application to the company he works for as they will/are looking for programmers in the near future (being when I complete my course no less). And there's probably a good chance I'll be hired after I complete my course!

 

Here I was the day before (Monday) totally bummed out that I bombed a test because I second guessed all my answers (flunked pretty bad, I went from a 100% right test to a 48% right test) and was really wondering if this was for me, and here's my opportunity being presented right to me to build my hobby from scratch!

 

I'm just so psyched now that I can't sleep! I'm totally seeing my course through, and working hard at both my coding. Heck, even my writing juices are flowing and I haven't had those going in YEARS. Bwahahahahaha!

 

Heh... Seems like all the bad karma real life has thrown at me and I've taken is finally starting to pay me back with some good karma!

 

Since I've given you guys a story about all my crappy times, I figured I'd share something relatively on the positive side for once.

Oh shit.. I guess I should explain some things. My bad.

 

I'm currently going to a computer programming school to learn how to be a computer programmer for video game companies. Or at least that's what I'm planning on doing with my life. Build my hobby, which is playing video games.

 

Samurai Studios is a gaming studios company that was newly created (or so I found out) that is creating the PC game, New Horizons. They are apparently right here in Edmonton, Alberta. New Horizons is a Sci-Fi genre game that is Samurai Studios is hoping to revitalize the genre with, because there so few games for the genre coming out lately. Roland Orr is actually head programmer dude (or will be the head guy once they get a full programming staff) for Samurai Studios and his current project is New Horizons.

Don't be too disappointed if for some reason you don't make it into the gaming industry... I had my heart set on that as well before, as I'm told a million or so other people have, but I changed my mind ahead of time instead of waiting too late to have my hopes crushed and am choosing to go on the net applications route by myself instead. Me and a friend of mine have decided that once he's done with a big puzzle game of his (which should be very soon), we're going to try to start a business off of bulletin board software (like this one, Invision's, but it'll be compiled code instead of PHP pages so it'll run faster) among other things.

 

I believe what will make that side of programming more fun and worthwhile for me is being able to help change the internet and the way people communicate with eachother, creativity's uses extend far beyond games in development, which is a little too physics-heavy for me anyway =P

 

Anyway, congrats on finding yourself an inside connection, those are quite valuable and I doubt you'll faulter. At the same time though, please remember that the games side of programming isn't the only interesting side of it. Not everything outside of that area is a boring hell of practicality.

Well, that's an interesting way of looking at programming and maybe I'll try to take some of that into what I believe: "coding is fun and people who use my programers have easier lives because of it". Hell, I'll admit that there are other things that are out there for programmers to do, and hell, I just love to code. But I want to at least try for my dream and know I'm a little closer to it then I was before.

 

Heh... Suddenly I'm thinking this was like a swift kick in the ass from God for doubting that the opportunites wouldn't be presented to me if I didn't have the patience to ride out the horrible things in life.

 

BTW, thanks for the continual support and all the putting up with me. Appreciated a lot TSMers.
