Morrissey urges fans to vote for John Kerry

Recommended Posts

BYE GEORGE?

MORRISSEY has branded US immigration officers under GEORGE BUSH as having "all the charm and unanswerable indignation of Hitler’s SS" and is urging his fans to vote for JOHN KERRY.

In a message on his official website, the often outspoken star made his political stance clear, lambasting Bush, days before the US election.

"With all my heart I urge people to vote against George Bush. Jon Stewart would be ideal, but John Kerry is the logical and sane move. It does not need to be said yet again, but Bush has single-handedly turned the United States into the most neurotic and terror-obsessed country on the planet," he wrote.

"For non-Americans, the United States is suddenly not a very nice place to visit because US immigration officers – under the rules of Bush – now conduct themselves with all the charm and unanswerable indignation of Hitler’s SS.

"Please bring sanity and intelligence back to the United States. Don’t forget to vote. Vote for John Kerry and get rid of George Bush!"

Morrissey will play four dates in the UK in December with support at the Birmingham leg coming from PJ Harvey.

The tour dates are:

Glasgow SECC (December 13)

Birmingham NIA (14)

Brighton Centre (17)

London Earl’s Court (18)

Rather than bother with the implications of a celebrity endorsement, let's talk about our favorite Smiths' songs.

I'm a on a big "William, It Was Really Nothing" kick. One of my favorite of Johnny Marr's many jangly guitar lines. And "Panic" has got to be an all-time favorite.

God bless Bush for keeping Morrissey out of the U.S.

Well, you're a loser.

Contrary to what Edwin said, I would like to discuss "You are the Quarry". Stellar album I say, I never actually got into any of his other solo stuff before this, I was mainly a Smiths fan.

My favourite Smiths song changes all the time, so nothing to say there. Right now, I'll just say "Shoplifters..."

Are all your posts this terrible?

Anyway, YPV is crazy; You are the Quarry has one or two decent songs and a lot of mediocrity. Par for the course as far as solo Morrissey goes, but Vauxhall & I and Your Arsenal are solid.

Oh, Your Arsenal is terrific. Song for song, I'd put it right up there with or possibly above any single Smiths album, although they're definitely better overall than solo Morrissey. And the Bona Drag singles compilation is nearly flawless. That said, I don't think Morrissey's endorsement is going to have much impact on the election, unless the largely unheralded "fans of aging British rock stars" voting bloc turns out in record numbers in key battleground states.

And doesn't Morrissey live in Los Angeles?

And doesn't Morrissey live in Los Angeles?

Yep, in Clark Gable's old house, next door to Johnny Depp I believe.

Anyway, is this really news? It'll make no difference what-so-ever to the election. Surely it won't be *that* close where the few thousand US ultra-hardcore fans who would vote Kerry just as Moz said so would make a difference.

And Quarry is excellent. Lazy Dykes apart there's very little wrong with it - it's definatly up there with Vauxhall and Your Arsenal.

:Tony Schiavone Mode:

This will completely change the face of this year's election!

:Mode off:

I'm sick of singers and entertainers telling me who to vote for. Focus on your god damn music and movies. It won't affect your life in any way shape or form.

I think "You Are the Quarry" is a quality album.

I don't think there is a bad track on it and stuff like "Irish Blood, English Heart", "How Could Anybody Possibly Know How I Feel?", "The First Of The Gang To Die" and "I Like You" are great tracks.

That's not to say that "Your Arsenal" and "Vauxhall & I" aren't good either. I mean, I love stuff like "You're the One For Me Fatty" and "The More You Ignore Me the Closer I Get".

Granted, my entire listening experience consists of "This Charming Man" heard no more than 5 times, somebody please explain to me the appeal in this guy.

Do you take smart-ass comments from kkk seriously?

Is this folder so pathetic that this is one of the main stories?

Was there an actual point to this being posted anyway?

The Mozzer weaves delightul pop songs the way Benoit puts on wrestling clinics. Catchy hooks, witty and often wistful lyrics, that signature voice… what's not to love? If only American pop music had even a thimbleful of Morissey's soul and talent, the world would be a much better place.

Right now, I'm on a big "Alma Matters" kick. I stop what I'm doing and listen every time it plays on my iTunes shuffle. But historically, my favourite Morrissey song will always be "Suedehead". A true pop classic.

Meat is Murder is really good if you forget the title track is there at the end of the album, festering like a cancerous appendage. [EDIT] Also, "How Soon is Now?" is alright but I never, ever want to hear it again. So, Meat is Murder has eight really, really good songs, one decent but overplayed song, and one terrible, horrible song.[/EDIT]

And AndrewTS, that you compare yourself to kkk answers the question I posed to you earlier, so thanks.

Oh, and I like Meat is Murder more than Strangeways, Here We Come. As obnoxious and braying MiM's title track is, it doesn't make me want to stab Morrissey in the throat like SHWC's "Unhappy Birthday."

Still, SHWC's A-side is pretty fucking great.

Simply, his comments deserve nothing more than being brushed off as that of some whining little hippie bitch.

The gist of Morrissey's gripes: "I'm being mildy inconvenienced. This is obviously Bush's fault. My fans should vote for Kerry since I think he'll make U.S. security more lax. (By implication of the comment about the officers) Bush = Hitler LOL2004)."

If you've changed your mind over a candidate because Morrissey is being held up an extra hour when he enters or exits the country, you're a dumbass, plain and simple. There are far, far better reasons to vote for Not-Bush. Besides, if you're a Morrissey fan, you aren't voting for Bush anyway, so this entire thread is pointless.

Thank you for continuing to prove Inc's point.

How can you hate the title track? It's certainly not horrible, it's just a sappy ballad for vegetarians. Not that bad, I'd give it a 6 if I were into rating songs, but there's a thread for that.

I also like MIM better then SHWC. I don't think the debut self titled album gets enough love, even though it's not as good as the others, it's still pretty damn good, which speaks to the Smiths ability more then anything else.

What other Morrissey albums should I get then? I really like You Are the Quarry, even if the production on it is a little too glossed over for my liking.

A-side? I just listened to the albums like most other people these days. How is it split up on vinyl, assuming that is what you're talking about when it comes to SHWC.

From what I've seen, AoO likes Metal and Prog. Morrissey/Smiths are very much neither.

I was watching a live version of Shoplifters, and either Morrissey has the worst security in the world, or all the countless men that run up to kiss him are paid to do it. Yeah.

1. Sappy, overwrought, etc. The addition of mooing cows is simply absurd. Even discounting the lyrics and sound effects, it's a dull dirge and a terrible way to end the album.

2. I love the first album, too. "Reel Around the Fountain" is my favorite Smiths song.

3. As mentioned, Your Arsenal and Vauxhall & I. Kinetic said Bona Drag, which I never got around to hearing myself, but is supposedly worthwhile.

4. Five on each side, I imagine. I've never looked at a vinyl copy of that album, but it's a safe guess.

The point, however, is SHWC really falls off for me in the second half, with "Unhappy Birthday" being the nadir. "Paint a Vulgar Picture" is good, though.

His main gripe was being held and searched and treated like shit by security when going home to LA after the European leg of his 2002 tour.

They locked him up for 6 hours and wouldn't tell him why and went through his bags and questioned him about what he'd been doing out of the country and how long he claimed to live in the US for etc.

How can you not mention I Won't Share You from Strangeways!?

Awesome song that almost makes up for Unhappy Birthday and Death At One's Elbow on the same side.

Is I Won't Share You about Marr? I heard a rumour about that.

I recently got Morrissey and Marr, The Severed Alliance. Apparently Morrissey, after reading it, wished for the death of the author. Sounds like a winner to me.

The two main theories are that I Won't Share You is either about -

a) Johnny Marr who Moz didn't like working with other musicans as he was worried someone else would steal him away from The Smiths.

Or

b) Linder Sterling. An old friend of Morrissey who was in the new wave jazz group Ludus. This only really works if you also believe the rumour that Moz has been in love with Linder for 30 years but she's never liked him in that way. Which might be true, but not many people believe it.

The Severed Alliance is good - but don't bother reading the chapters on the Morrissey and Maher (Marr) famillies. Unless you're desperate for a very dull and poorly written history of Irish-English immigrants.

I see those Nazi Germany parallels...yeeeup.

MY GOD, SIX HOURS?!?! He might have missed check-in time at his hotel if he'd not planned on such a delay! Those monsters!

Are all your posts this terrible? What sort of discussion? I don't think the actual music discussion in this thread was the intended result.

The second sentence makes no sense whatsoever.

Thank you for continuing to prove Inc's point.

Translation: "No, I can't justify Morrissey's embarrasing, self-centered, and tastleless gripes either, so I won't even try. I'll just continue to attack the person who DARES to not like him."

Props to MiG for doing a better job of explaining Morrissey's complaints than Morrissey could himself, though, and certainly better than the folks who didn't even try.

Just so you know -

I'm not really justifying his stance with that, just saying what he's said about what happened to him.

Personally I wish he'd bloody shut up about it and stop writing songs about Bush and lawyers and judges etc and go back to writing about things he did prior to the court case with the other ex-Smiths and the Bush administration.

Plus for someone who doesn't vote he can't really complain too much....

And Agent of Oblivion likes a lot of different stuff, but I would never bother explaining to him the appeal of sensitive men making sensitive music.

Yeah, that's about the size of it. I checked out some lyrics out of curiousity, and that's just fine.
