Confessions of a Texas Democrat

Recommended Posts

Guest CronoT

I did not vote today.

The reason for that is very simple. I'm a Democrat, or democratically leaning person, who lives in a state that is heavily, extremely Republican. I live in Texas, a state which has voted for the GOP candidates for, to the best of my knowledge, decades. In the overall scheme of things, my single vote would not have mattered, either on the state, or the national level.

El Paso, Texas is the only major metropolitian area in the state that is heavily Democratic. That is why our city often finds itself at odds with the state capital, Austin. I think a political cartoon I once saw sizes it up pretty good: A GOP staffer from Austin is putting up the GOP insignia for Texas, while a staffer from El Paso is putting up the DNC insignia. The GOP staffer says first "Hey! We're Texas!!" To which the El Paso staffer says "But we're Democrats."

Every four years, I wonder why I haven't moved to New Mexico, which is geographically, socially, and politically more like El Paso, than El Paso is to the rest of Texas. This, among many other things, only underscores the need for election reform; starting with the Electoral College.

Well, I've said my peace, so now, we can all get back to finding out who the President will be, come this Janurary. Whoever it is, may God bless him; because we're all going to need it.

That's nice. Nobody cares...

Hmm, I was expecting Mike to be the first one to shit on my parade. But, I guess this is the same, pretty much.

You didn't vote?

You can no longer complain.

If it takes you too much energy to walk to a polling place and vote, no matter how worthless it may have been, then you can no longer complain about the President or the state of the country cause you forfeited the right.

Country goes to war you don't like? Too bad, you didn't vote.

Taxes too high? Shoulda voted

My vote is worthless and I voted. Hell, ALL of our votes are worthless no matter where the hell you live. There aren't enough people on this board to make an ounce of difference in their state but if they want to bitch and complain, they need to vote.

You don't vote, you no longer have the right to say a thing about the state of the country or what this country does. This only applies if you live here. Now if you want to move to Mexico or Canada, you can complain all you want...we just won't care.

Seriously, shut the fuck up.

You didn't vote, big deal -- a lot of people don't. Please don't think you're some sort of special case because of it.

There are other things to vote on besides POTUS, but I'm glad you didn't vote becuase you probably would have backed the hippie candidate...

I say we ban him for not contributing to the elections and trying to act like he was justified in his cause.

Did I in any way say that I was justified in not voting? I was simply expressing my opinion, which I am allowed to do, about the realities of my situation. Anything else you infered on your own.

You basically said you didn't care. If you care about your local area, you would have voted. but you didn't. By not voting, you indicate you don't care and by not caring for ONE day, it revolts you from being allowed to have a policitical Opinion until the next election.

I don't give two shits, but I'm glad you didn't vote. The loss of a voice of the lazy is not a big loss.

I did not vote today.

Never post in here again. I stood in line for two hours today.

When you live in a state that is going to overwhelmingly side with a certain candidate, it is a good oppurtunity to vote 3rd party. Also, local measures are very important.

Really? I was in and out in five.

Complete with Kerry people outside going "You better not have voted for Bush", which I didn't. Course when they asked if I voted for Kerry and I said no cause I didn't care, they were kind enough to respond, "well then I guess you DID vote for Bush didn't you?"

Everything is beautiful, in it's own way.

There were no local measures on the ballot today for my part of Texas. We did all those last year, including the mayor, the sheriff, and so on. I did vote on those. So, the only things that were on the ballot was the President, and maybe one of the Senators.

Then you should have gone. Poked your fucking hole through for Kerry and whoever you felt like siding with for your senators.

A few minutes of your time was all it requires and you couldn't bother to make an effort and you hide behind the bullshit "it means nothing" curtain. You are just an absolute sad case of what's wrong with most of our generation. Thank god, our generation woke the fuck up today and voted, be it for Bush or Kerry but they went and VOTED.

Yeah it wasn't a fun time. My knees are in really bad shape and the bones grind together if I stand for long periods of time like that. So it's been a painful day.

I'm in the same position as Mad Dog, especially as some fucktard parked in a handicapped spot. I still voted.

I now hold your opinion even lower than I did before. Congratulations.

Sorry if I've been gone for a while. Since you guys got so incensed over my not voting, I went and did it. There were six things on the ballot: President, Congressman, and four city positions. I voted for Kerry, obviously.

[EDIT]-I just saw Texas on the poll list: Bush-63%, Kerry-36%. For El Paso County, Kerry is beating Bush by about 10 points, 54% to 46%.

Like that's much better... now you openly admitted that your little dilemma over voting was influenced by a mostly wrestling-influenced message board.

Even a fucking protest vote is a VOTE. You should not take place in political discourse, even in the small arena of this board, until you vote. And not decide to vote because anonymous people are griping at you from a board, because you believe in casting your vote.

Hey look you voted and they still don't care! Its almost like... YOU CAN DO NO RIGHT!!! Typical.

Hey, he went and voted and that was a good thing. It only doesn't change the fact that he's weak-minded for deciding not to vote, thinking he'd still have the right to gripe over the issues, and having to be persuaded by us to vote in the first place. But it still counts.
