OAO Best Damned Wrestling Event Ever Thread

Recommended Posts

What I saw last night was pretty bad. I don't mean the wrestling though, or any of the TNA stuff (the matches were too short though, I'll admit that). I'm talking about everything having to do with BDSSP. For one, to me they were just there to make fun of TNA, to make light of the talent and just to make fun of the business as a whole.

Hearing Tom Arnold talk about the wrestlers as that black guy, the white guy, and the little Indian guy just told me that he couldn't care less about what was going on, and didn't bother to get to know the product they were supposed to be shilling. Everyone else was bad also, very horrible in every way. They just were not into it at all, and it made TNA, and wrestling, look very bad.

If I wasn't a wrestling fan and I just saw that first show, I wouldn't even think twice about TNA. The bad on the show just totally over shadowed all of the good.

I'll post thoughts about tonight after this show goes off, but I'm pretty sure it'll just be more of the same.

Two thumbs WAY down from me.

I really think that the BDSSP tie-in did much more harm than good. They really had a good shot here at drawing in some new fans that either have never heard of TNA, or people like me who know about TNA, but don't really watch it much. Seeing Tom Arnold cavort with midgets (I taped SD for the recap, so I was kind of flipping back and forth) and Chris Rose looking even more gay than he usually does, it really turned me off. The X match was pretty decent tonight, from what I saw, but everything else was just putrid.

WTF?

I'm watching tonight's show, and they just did a "coming up next" bit and they were talking about what happened last night, as if it was about to happen for the first time. Did I see that wrong?

I am just watching tonights show now and its pretty lame so far from what I've seen. Didnt like what they put out for the most part last night either, as it was something between some badly booked pseudo introduction of TNA by FSN on a better timeslot (First Impact shows did introducing the product to the masses ALOT better) and generally just a weird way to promote the BSSSP staff. Tom Arnold was beyond annoying commentating on the Ultimate X match and in general all the tie-ins with the Sports Show crew were bad. It didnt help anyone really other than MAYBE allowing TNA to showcase the two special gimmick matches with the six-side cage match and the Ultimate X match as being something different from WWE.

Ultimately, the whole tie-in should have been kept to a certain level where it didnt become overdone as it did with both of these shows. It will be interesting if these shows get decent ratings, but it will be even more interesting if that means more viewers for Impact. I think overall these shows might hurt TNA more than not even IF they get a decent rating from it, as if people see TNA for the first time with these shows, they arent probably going to keep watching.

For what its worth, and I can't believe TNA did this, but they basically let some of the Sports Show guys book these shows with their background assistance. They covered it in detail in the last Observer, and it's just showing either TNA feels they have to be FSN's bitch to get somewhere and/or these shows werent thought out well enough to come up with something suitable to the masses. I think its pretty sad that at least 3-4 matches that could have been saved for a ppv or a main event of Impact were on these shows ad nauseum with no buildup other than inconsistent promotion for the last week on FSN. These shows should have been organized months, if not at least A MONTH in advance.

While I don't think this was a good wrestling show, I do think it was a pretty good cross-promotion. It was all done sort-of tongue in cheek, so I don't think first time viewers would take this as a serious picture of TNA. The best that could happen is that they could see a wrestler that they want to see again, and tune into Impact. If that happens, I suppose the show was a success.

I watched part of the replay this morning while getting dressed for work, and I really thought that it made TNA look like crap, like nothing more than a low-budget indy.

The six sided ring is different, but different isn't always good. (It reminded me of that phony martial arts show that used to be on Saturday afternoons or something like RollerGames.) The fact that most of the BDSSP people seemed to be trying not to laugh while involved didn't help. And the matches/replays from the PPV that I saw didn't come across that well.

All in all, it got the TNA name out there, but I don't necessarily think that the old "any publicity is good publicity" cliche is accurate. This was the 2nd time I've watched TNA (I bought one of the PPVs around when Raven first joined) and - most likely - it'll be the last time that I bother watching any.

EDIT: and, question for whitemilesdavis, which 2 year old hockey game was it?

Funny thing is, when I watched last night I was thinking to myself "I wonder what casual fans and NON wrestling fans think of this show"? Then that came to mind.

Oh yeah, was the crowd chanting "Jeff Hardy sucks" while they were brawling? That's what it sounded like, butI couldn't tell.

Shit, I loved that show. They need to bring it back and show it again.
