WWE Upgrading Production Equipment

I'm told that the WWE will be upgrading its production equipment over the next few week's. Very soon all telecasts will be broadcast in HDTV which delivers high-resolution images. The key difference between new HDTV and the old analogue NTSC TV we are used to, is that the programs are delivered digitally, by cable, satellite or over-the air transmission. This eliminates the effects of interference, ghosting and noise, and assures perfect images on the screen.

SpikeTV doesn't broadcast in HDTV.

 

Even if you have an HDTV-ready television you can only pick up an HDTV signal through channels made specifically to broadcast HDTV.

 

My digital cable company has CBSHD, ABCHD and a few more channels.

 

So basically WWE will be recording and broadcasting an HDTV signal - but it's still shown over an NTSC channel via SpikeTV negating the quality.

 

Now this HDTV recording equipment will, however, allow for greater video clarity on future DVD releases.

 

But until WWE broadcasts on an HDTV channel, the visual difference every week will be minimal.

With negotiations coming up with Viacom about staying on Spike, this could become a factor. Plus, it's nice to know that if they DO stay on Spike, whenever the channel upgrades its equipment, WWE will be ready to go.

 

Also, would this have any effect on PPV?

I wish our show had been in HDTV, I would have loved to see my beautiful face really sharp and clear for all those sexy hunks out there.

The DVD quality sucks because they are compressing a lot of video onto one disc - usually a 3 hour PPV and extras. Splitting things onto two discs would help this, not spending a ridiculous amount of money on something most people won't care about.

The reason I suspect WWE is doing this.....

 

UPN is expanding HDTV programming....

 

"UPN will present its largest slate of HDTV programming in the history of the network for the 2004-2005 season, it was announced today by Dawn Ostroff, President, Entertainment, UPN. Half of the network’s primetime line-up – a record seven series –will be broadcast in high definition television, beginning with the premieres of all three of UPN’s drama series “Veronica Mars,” “Kevin Hill” and “Star Trek: Enterprise,” and extending to UPN’s Monday night comedies “One on One,” “Half & Half,” “Girlfriends” and “Second Time Around” by November. This brings the Network’s weekly HDTV offerings to five hours. Last season, UPN presented two hours of series programming in HDTV, including “Star Trek: Enterprise,” as well as select Friday night movies."

I just realized that this is a bonus for any network wanting to pick up RAW, in that they'll have another HD show in their lineup. SpikeTV has no reason to go HD anytime in the next million years even if their #1 show was capable of being HD. WWE going HD now is pretty much a sure sign that they won't be sticking around with SpikeTV.

What channels on the "potential" list even have HDTV? I know USA doesn't, I never seen FX with it either. So how exactly does this mean it has something to do with getting a new deal?

USA is affiliated with NBC which is affiliated with Bravo and Bravo is in HD right now until Dec 1 when it becomes Universal HD which will have all sorts of stuff in HD.

 

FX is obviously owned by Fox and it wouldn't surprise me if FX had a HD channel in the near future.

I might be wrong here, but Fox doesn't even broadcast in HDTV right now. All of their shows that are in "HDTV" are actually widescreen broadcasted in 480P.

 

The only reason I could see the WWE going to HDTV would be for DVD releases, but Blu-Ray is a long ways away, and Spike TV won't be going to HD anytime sooner than they are required to due to lack of original programing which could be shot in HD and the abundance of old SD (standard definition) reruns.

 

HD DVDs - impracticale on the current DVD format

Spike TV going HD - Unlikely

HD PPVs - Possible, but also not likely

 

It can't hurt to have the progamming in HD if they dumb it down for broadcast... it would pay off in the future when they go to resell stuff we already have in HD. Though them switching to another channel is also likely

 

Edit: Fuck... just found the press release:

 

"The system is fully upgradeable, allowing customers like WWE to purchase the Alchemist Platinum Ph.C for standard-definition (SD) conversion and easily adapt it to accommodate HD feeds at a later date."

 

Just what I was talking about.
