Shooting Star Posted November 16, 2004 Report Posted November 16, 2004 I'm putting this on the HS since i may get flamed for what I am about to say. First of all..why do we only call the people from the U.S American? we call the Chinese, the Japanesse the Korean etc....Asians, we call British people and French and Hungarians Europeans, everyone on the African continent we call African but it seems as if only the people in the United States are referred to as Americans. They weren't even the first country in the continent. It was Dominican Republic the oldest country in the western hemisphere and yet i don't think i have ever heard anyone call us American. Why is this? the spanish word for american is Estado Unidense but i have never seen anyone call themself that...only american. I know by posting this on a wrestling forum I am not changing anything but i wanted to see some opinions.
Guest Nanks Posted November 16, 2004 Report Posted November 16, 2004 Your continent isn't called America. If I were to generalise about people from the US in the same manner as calling French or Germans, Europeans, I would call you North Americans.
Shooting Star Posted November 16, 2004 Author Report Posted November 16, 2004 Your continent isn't called America. If I were to generalise about people from the US in the same manner as calling French or Germans, Europeans, I would call you North Americans. I forgot about that...in the spanish speaking countries we refer to south and north america as just America but i guess in the english ones it's different.
Der Kommissar Posted November 16, 2004 Report Posted November 16, 2004 I am guessing because it's the United States of America, thus Americans. I wonder what they call people from the Central African Republic.
Guest Nanks Posted November 16, 2004 Report Posted November 16, 2004 The two continents are referred to as The Americas. But each is a distinct continent. Further on the topic, the U.S, is in actual fact, the U.S.A, The United States of America. Similarly, China, is in fact, The People's Republic of China, but we don't call them Republican Chinese or anything similar. If you're from a Spanish-speaking country, the whole issue is translational, I would suggest. EDIT: Simultaneous posting of the same point.
Shooting Star Posted November 16, 2004 Author Report Posted November 16, 2004 I am guessing because it's the United States of America, thus Americans. I wonder what they call people from the Central African Republic. Good point...but they still refuse to call everyone else american.
Slayer Posted November 16, 2004 Report Posted November 16, 2004 I wonder what they call people from the Central African Republic. Speaking of Africa, here's one that's baffled me: People from Nigeria are Nigerians, but what are people from Niger? Nigers? I dunno...
Der Kommissar Posted November 16, 2004 Report Posted November 16, 2004 but what are people from Niger? Nigers? I decided to look it up. Apparently, they are Nigeriens with an "e." As for the Central African Republicans, they are called "Central Africans." How generic. I much prefer what they called people from Liechtenstein: Liechtensteiners. Now that'd be a cool nationality to be.
The Czech Republic Posted November 16, 2004 Report Posted November 16, 2004 They're Scott and Rick's ring rats: lickin' Steiners. You wanna talk about "Americans" not making sense? We call people from the Netherlands "Dutch," though Germans are the true "Deutsch," and we SHOULD call the Dutch "Nederlanders." Meanwhile, THE COUNTRY IS NOT HOLLAND, YOU DUMBFUCKS!
Golgo 13 Posted November 16, 2004 Report Posted November 16, 2004 I am guessing because it's the United States of America, thus Americans. I wonder what they call people from the Central African Republic. Good point...but they still refuse to call everyone else american. It's because we're the only country that matters.
Guest Shutterspeed Posted November 16, 2004 Report Posted November 16, 2004 There has to be a reason that this was posted in HD.
justsoyouknow Posted November 16, 2004 Report Posted November 16, 2004 This is where the rest of stupidity goes, it makes sense to me. As long as Bush is president, anyone from any other country is simply referred to as "terrorist". That's a tidy group to shuffle them into.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted November 16, 2004 Report Posted November 16, 2004 I thought everyone called us yanks.
justsoyouknow Posted November 16, 2004 Report Posted November 16, 2004 Unless you're from the south, of course.
The Czech Republic Posted November 16, 2004 Report Posted November 16, 2004 There has to be a reason that this was posted in HD. Geography is HARDCORE
Vern Gagne Posted November 16, 2004 Report Posted November 16, 2004 I thought everyone called us yanks. Not if you voted for President Bush. Than it's. Arrogant right-wing christian jingoistic thug.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted November 16, 2004 Report Posted November 16, 2004 I just call Bush voters asswipes, usually. Kerry voters are dipshit. 3rd party voters are dumbasses, and people that didn't vote are retards.
Guest Shutterspeed Posted November 16, 2004 Report Posted November 16, 2004 I refer to you as North American. "Yank" is too overused down here and "American" just doesn't sound right. Not that I really ever refer to you. Cunts. The lot of you.
Shooting Star Posted November 16, 2004 Author Report Posted November 16, 2004 I put this in HS cause i thought i would get flamed.
Guest ShootingStylesPress Posted November 16, 2004 Report Posted November 16, 2004 American would mean someone of the Americas, including Canada, USA, Mexico, South America. It's like Asian to describe someone from Russia, Thailand, India. It's odd, because a lot of people call people from the Orient 'Asians', which is true, but to be more accurate, they're Orientals. Which sounds cooler anyway.
Guest Quality Poster Posted November 16, 2004 Report Posted November 16, 2004 Everybody seems to like to call us Finns, which sounds so very retarded.
The Czech Republic Posted November 16, 2004 Report Posted November 16, 2004 Everybody seems to like to call us Finns, which sounds so very retarded. And "Suomi" doesn't?

By that token, you could say that Iran is part of the Orient, since the (we) Three Kings of Orient (are) were Persians.
Guest Quality Poster Posted November 16, 2004 Report Posted November 16, 2004 Everybody seems to like to call us Finns, which sounds so very retarded. And "Suomi" doesn't? It probably does to you, but come on. add one letter to "finn" and you get the word for pimple in finnish.
Highland Posted November 16, 2004 Report Posted November 16, 2004 Some neo-cons in Canada might love to be called Americans, but it wouldn't go over very well with the rest of the country.

Give me credit for knowing the word "Suomi," most people here were probably like "duh isnt that klike chris berman's nickname"
Highland Posted November 16, 2004 Report Posted November 16, 2004 I know it only because I remember what the Finnish hockey jerseys look like. I miss hockey
