This is the most Valuable player not the player that puts up the best numbers in batting average, rbi's and homeruns. Guerrero carried the Angels into the playoffs, the team had a ton of injuries and would have been nowhere without Vlad.

Plus the voting is done the day after the regular season ends so that is all the voters are going to pretty much remember.

Guerrero got them into the playoffs sure, but once the playoffs got going, you could see that they were nowhere near the quality of team that the Red Sox were. I'd say that Ortiz was actually the most valuable player in the American League this year. Of course, no one could really tell for sure by the end of the season, so I can see how Vlad got the MVP, and I can also see why they have to vote before the playoffs. It's just that after they went through clutch time, Ortiz's value showed itself to be a lot stronger, in what was an extremely close MVP race throughout.

It was the most valuable player. Guerrero carried his team throughout the whole year, and had less protection than Ortiz and Ramirez. It's the reason he won it. He was the one guy on the team that stayed healthy, and still kept producing without protection. Plus, he took the team on his shoulders and got them into the playoffs. No way in hell they make the playoffs without him, not even close. Boston would atleast have a chance of making the playoffs (probably would have anyway) with the pitching staff they had.

He stats this year were even better than his MVP year in 02, so if our team was better he might have had a chance. Mora should have been higher, I would have had him above Irod at 9th.

Wouldn't that be a plus in favor of voting for Vlad, since he got to the playoffs with an inferior team? BTW, how many people would have predicted a tie between Mark Kotsay and A-rod for MVP at the beginning of the year?

He's not particularly good against lefties (the Washburn homer nonewithstanding), and he is a DH. Manny Ramirez beats him at just about every facet of the game. The only advantage Ortiz has is nine RBIs, and he has those thanks to having Manny bat in front of him. By and large, the voters got this right. You could have picked Vlad, Gary Sheffield, Johan Santana or Manny Ramirez, and have a good argument for any of them. Personally, I thought Santana deserved the award. But Vlad is a fine choice. Nice to see playing for a 100+ win team didn't improve A-Rod's standing with the voters. You can't tell me there were 13 better players in the league this year. What is the excuse this time?

His clutch hitting was nonexistant, but he got on base a fair amount of times, stole 28 of 32 (a very high percentage), and scored alot of runs. Plus, he won the Gold Glove at third base, adding value with his defense.
