I got some hippie 32mb memory card for the PS2 today and I'm just wondering, before I go put all my saved games onto it, if it is reliable. I heard that some "unoffical" PS memory cards would crash and burn, but this was made by Samsung and was at a good price, so I figured I'd splurge.

Should I be worried?...

I never pay $30 for a memory card. Madkatz and Nyko have good deals for memory cards. Why pay $30 for a single memory card when you can get a 3rd party 32 meg card for $15.

The only problem I ever had with a 3rd party memory unit was with the Dreamcast as it forgot what year it was every few months.

I found that the knockoff memory cards for PS1 were terrible. One, oddly, registered as a PocketStation, and lost data for me.

I haven't heard about as many problems with the PS2 cards, but I'd stick with either the official ones, or ones that have a good rep. Out of three PS2 cards I have, one is official, 2 are the nyko ones (yellow and black), and I've had no problems. Can't really say either way about the one you're talkinga about.

Even with "official" cards, I usually back up the data I'd hate to lose on another card.

The 32MB ones are often risky, though, since they expect you to compress and uncompress. I'd be wary.

MadCatz' stuff is notoriously poorly made, though. Their controllers are awful and not very durable, and one of the knockoffs I've had bad luck with (on N64) was a MC.

Nyko is a little different. I'd gotten a cheap-ass, goofy-looking controller for the DC at a dollar store that was a Nyko, and it was durable and very responsive.

What issues do MadCatz controllers have? I own one and it works perfectly. It has substituted my old PS2 controller that has been worn down and had the shit kicked through it since to several negative experiences with some games.

Should I expect this thing to fall apart any day now or something?

Most likely, MadCatz products are known to break down...a lot.

If your looking for a different brand I recommand stuff from Intec and Logitech. These two from what I have experianced don't get returned as often.

As has been said above, the PS1 knockoff cards were notoriously unreliable, especially any of the Memory Card Plus line that used compression.

As for PS2 cards, I haven't heard any complaints yet but I wouldn't use it as your primary card... ESPECIALLY if you're doing long-term stuff like Dynasty mode in a sports game or any RPG.

I haven't had any problems with Interact or Pelican, either.

Serves me right for being a cheap bastard, I suppose. Oh well, I'll run this one into the ground and then just stick to official controllers.

I've actually found that some of the MadCatz controllers are a tad too bulky to play my fighting games, which is essentially all I play (eg. Tekken 4, Virtua Fighter 4, CVS2, MVC2 etc.).
