Nighthawk 0 Report post Posted December 3, 2004 Oh, no doubt. This was in the era of Downward Spiral though. I used to run with these goth kids and they'd say "Unless you listen to NIN, Marilyn Manson, Korn and Ozzy, you're a poser." Come to think of it, I can't even remember why they were my friends. Must have been the drugs. I always loved Manson, because he had so much style, but I couldn't even bring myself to approach the other bands they liked. I think in the end it was Bowie's endorsement of Reznor that made me give him a second look. Course Bowie hasn't been very good for a while either. I still can't do it with Korn. As an aside, when Trent Reznor sings, he has the not in itself bad, but still unfortunate tendency to sound like Weird Al when he hits certain notes.

I never noticed that before. Now I'm gonna have to listen to some NIN to see if I can hear this new comparison.

Guest Vitamin X Report post Posted December 3, 2004 I haven't purchased much "new" music as of late, but what I have discovered is that the one new album I bought SUCKS. Fuck A Perfect Circle for trying to be political. It didn't work, Maynard. Now give me another Tool album. the other guy in the band should never try to sing again, EVER. What's so Funny (about peace love and understanding) was fucking terrible with that other guy's vocals. I still love the "Imagine" cover, though. I didn't like that they put on a very slightly different version of "Pet" on eMotive and renamed it "Counting Bodies Like Sheep To The Rhythm of the War Drums", reflecting the chorus. The rest of the album is rather average, nothing spectacular, though nothing really bad, either. I'm just looking forward to the new System album, myself. I don't know what's a worse guilty pleasure.. Liking Britney Spears, Evanescence, or the whole crunk movement (I was listening to that new Lil Jon song "What chu Gon' Do?" earlier today and yesterday). I also have a thing for fantastic female vocalists lately. Which is why I'm so incredibly into Amy Lee's music. Fuck, I bought a CD of her earlier work featuring a ton of unreleased material and I love it. They're really misinterpreted because of the bands they're lumped in with, most of these kids listening to that music have no clue the deeper meaning behind the lyrics, or the anguish in her voice in the song, "Hello" for example. I've also gotten into Lacuna Coil and Fiona Apple a lot recently. Although it feels like I just revoked my "metalhead" status, I've also listened to a ton of the most utterly isolating, desolate, depressing black metal possible. Thanks Agalloch, for making the tragic so beautiful. I think I'm also pretty damn lost musically. I can't stand so much of this indie rock shit I'm "supposed" to like and appreciate as great stuff in comparison to what's being put out on the radio lately, which I also think is shit. So I end up an amalgamation of a variety of different genres as a result, with metal and hard rock leading the way, but open to anything. As an aside, when Trent Reznor sings, he has the not in itself bad, but still unfortunate tendency to sound like Weird Al when he hits certain notes. Wait, Reznor *sings*? This is news to me. Most songs I've heard from him sound more like he's speaking in a conversational tone with various emotions than really injecting his voice as an instrument. Those you mentioned aren't so impressive, in the grand scheme of things. Speaking of isolating, desolate and depressing, one album which suits those adjectives well is Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works Vol. 2. Man, that's a fucking bleak album. Like I heard somebody say, it sounds like music from a dying alien planet. Vol. 1 was much more upbeat, but I probably like Vol. 2 more... probably.
Guest Loss Report post Posted December 3, 2004 Brian Eno is quite bleak himself, even though his music hasn't really held up well over time, at least to me.

But Lee for example, is a vocalist whose lyrics and voice I'm connecting with strongly as of late. The whole feeling of loneliness and regret. I connect with Scabbia's lyrics because of the wordplay used and the themes. I still can't stand the backup vocalist from Lacuna Coil, or the rest of Evanescence for that matter though. Anneke from the Gathering is the only good female vocalist I've heard who has a decent group backing her, well same with Angela Gossow but that's a whole different style of vocals there. Because not liking Tears For Fears is so much worse than not liking Bowie or REM? Honestly, of that lot I'd see Bowie, REM, Nine Inch Nails and PJ Harvey. Although all four are past their peak. There are others there I wouldn't mind either way seeing, but those would be the four things that would attract me to it. I still wouldn't go, anyway, given that three of those four have either toured here in the past six months or will tour here within the next six.
