Cartman 0 Report post Posted November 29, 2004 Ok so when i bought this computer I had Windows XP Home already installed on it. Being the jackass I am, I went and got a bootleg cpoy of XP Pro and installed it over Home. So now of course I cannot download SP2, which sucks. Is there any way to revert back to Home? I don't have recovery discs, instead it's a system recovery partition in the HDD.
Jobber of the Week 0 Report post Posted November 29, 2004 What kind of machine is this? I've never heard of a "system recovery partition" before. Can you boot to that partition and run the provided XP Home installer there or what?
Cartman 0 Report post Posted November 29, 2004 It's a Compaq Presario Athlon 64 3200 System recovery partition is a section of the Hard Drive that is used for system restore points. The PC makes it's own restore points which you can revert to if something should happen to the PC. \ Problem is I installed XP Pro when i bought the comp a while back...and the farthest restore point I have availible is in August. Jobber of the Week 0 Report post Posted November 29, 2004 Oh, you're talking about the XP program System Restore? That's included in every XP installation and not quite the same thing. Plus, while it does archive some files and come in handy from time to time, it's not going to be able to replace your entire OS with an entire old one. You need to nuke your system drive and start over. Edited: Check this document. I think it might help. Again, you're going to lose everything you haven't backed up elsewhere, but it's the only real way to go without opening yourself up to all kinds of errors and oddities. Consider it your punishment for installing a bootleg OS, I guess.
Eclipse 0 Report post Posted November 29, 2004 Actually, there is a way to still download SP2, with a bootleg version of Windows XP Pro. I did it. If I installed it with the key I used, it wouldn't let me. There is this program that allows you to change your CD Key, and even generate key codes that are compatible with SP2. Guest Big_Jay101 Report post Posted December 5, 2004 well if you have the windows Xp install disk, I am sure it asks you what partition you want to put the OS on, when it does that you can delete XP pro.
Cartman 0 Report post Posted December 5, 2004 Yea well I have found a way to install SP2 (thanks pal) but I reversed it because i couldnt get my damn mouse to work with it anymore. I looked for driver updates and everything yet nothing worked. So i'll stick without it.
