NoCalMike 0 Report post Posted November 30, 2004 I am looking into getting a digital camera for christmas. I don't need anything fancy, probably just a 4 or 5 pixel camera. Most I have seen advertised come with either a 16mb memory card, or just have 16mb of internal memory. My question is, approximately how many pictures can this 16mb store before it is full? I am sure eventually I will end up purchasing a memory card with a lot more space, but I am not sure if I want to request one as a christmas gift, or if I can just hold off on it. I am going to a Skins/49ers game on December 18th, and I plan on taking a lot of pictures during the tailgate, and once inside during warmups and the game, so I am not sure if the 16mbs of space is going to be able to handle it. Also, my computer is a few years old, and I only have USB 1.0 ports. We have another computer that might have 1.1, but I am pretty sure it doesn't have 2.0. I noticed most of the digital cameras are listed as "USB, yes USB 1.1" does that mean you HAVE TO HAVE at least USB 1.1 for it to work, or are they just saying that USB 1.1 is the "standard" and that if you have 1.0, it will just go a little slower transfering pics to the computer? CanadianChris 0 Report post Posted November 30, 2004 I can't answer the second question. However, for the first question: Digital cameras measure picture size in megapixels, not pixels. A 4 or 5 megapixel camera is a high-end camera. You'd be looking for a 1 or 2 megapixel camera on the lower end. A 16MB memory card can store 45 pictures on a 1 megapixel camera, and about 17 on a 2 megapixel camera. Go to this site to see a comparion chart for memory card size vs. picture size. starvenger 0 Report post Posted November 30, 2004 I just bought a Canon SD200 (about 3.3 MPix) online. After discussing with my brother, he recommended getting a 512MB sD card since you can take around 3-400 shots, so that's about the size I recommend you get to go with your 16MB card, since for what you're getting, you'll get about 5 shots. If you can't get one in time, then borrow from your friends. As far as the USB goes, the end that connects to your computer is the same for both 1.0 and 2.0, so there shouldn't be a problem there. NoCalMike 0 Report post Posted November 30, 2004 I just looked at the chart, and initially, all I feel I will really need is 128mb memory card. It can store about 50 pics on a 5mp camera, and I doubt I will be taking more then 50 pics. After that, depending on how often I use the camera, I can look into getting a bigger memory card. DARRYLXWF 0 Report post Posted December 1, 2004 Also, a word of warning for memory cards. They're not a 100% secure, and can corrupt pretty easily if not taken care of. Even so, dust or sand or whatever can screw the card up. It doesn't mean it's broken though, it only means you've lost the pictures you've taken. Be sure to load up the pics to a computer all the time.
