I need a good RPG.

Recommended Posts

It's been forever since I played a good RPG.

I remember the days of my Junior High and High School where I was rapidly plugging in the Final Fantasies, Xenogears(away Andrew!), Legend of Legaia, Wild Arms, and well any RPG I could get my hands on.

These days I dunno but it doesn't seem like there is as much choice available. I can't seem to find any RPG's to play. I was wondering if I'm just not looking hard enough and if you guys can suggest one?

It's like the RPG mystique is gone for me.....

Phantom Brave*

Disgaea*

La Pucelle: Tactics

Skies of Arcadia

Tales of Symphonia*

Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door

Shadow Hearts: Covenant*

Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne

Fable

X-Men Legends

Shining Force: Resurrection of the Dark Dragon*

And that's about all the game's from this year I'd say are worth playing. I say playing, I did not say own. Own have a little * by their name. Oh, KOTOR 2 probably is worth playing as well, but I haven't done so.

Those look good......maybe I should clarify though....turn-based RPG.

And yeah I've played Kingdom Hearts and Falbe but none of the others that Lightining Flik mentioned.

* denotes owning? You don't have any * on there.

You want good RPGs....

...or the same old stale, mediocre, turn-based RPGs with cliche stories, stock characters, and maybe handfuls of gratuitous religious references just for the hell of it?

Because of that list you made, I'd conclude the latter.

I'm sure Flik could hook you up in that case.

Be on the lookout for Xenosaga Ep. 2, with 15% less actual gameplay!

 Aw man, that's so true. I can't stand boring, turn-based RPGs.

If you haven't given it shot, just start playing KOTOR (the first one, I don't know where all these people are talking about the second one since I don't think it's come out yet) and prepare to be addicted.

Fable is good for a rental, even better to just borrow the game from a friend.

It's a pretty short game, but a lot of fun. You can have devil horns and then throw fireballs at people. Thats reason enough to play.

I've played a bunch of RPGs this gen, and I've only liked four a lot, those being Suikoden 3, BOF: DQ, and Shadow Hearts 1 + 2.

I loved Suikoden 3, but I'm a Suikdoden fanboy. I liked how they improved on the war battles in this one, it played out like Ogre Battle. The duels were also better than it's prequels. I liked the inclusion of the skill system as well. The villain was well-developed and I really enjoyed the characters and when they interacted, especially Geddoe's crew. I do prefer the second one a bit more than this one, but this one is excellent still.

I fell in love with Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter because it was different. Everything about it I loved, from the SOL (which many hated) to the Dragon Ratio. You could become an invincible killing machine anytime you wanted, the downside being if you use it too much, you die. It also has one of my favourite endings in an RPG.

I'm also a big fan of the Shadow Hearts series because they stray from the norm as well. Awesome setting, taking place in an alternate version of the 1900s. It's very cool visiting Japan, China, and Europe. The characters are well done and the stories aren't bad at all.

Andrew you don't like what I like it's that simple. Stop preaching to me.

I don't find them boring or stale. I enjoy them. Get over it and don't come in preaching.

Suikoden I+II are way better than III, and III's all right. Suikoden II in particular is godly (and ungodly expensive)

valkyrie Profile is supakeen

The first Shadow Hearts is good. I expect the second one to be better.

I thought the gameplay in the LoTR RPG was pretty awful, and the story

not particularly great.

And yes, please play Disgaea.

You didn't really say what you were looking for in an RPG, so it's fair to ask (albeit I did it in a backhanded way) what you're looking for a newer RPG.

You didn't really give anyone anything to go on other than examples of other titles you liked. Should we assume recommendations should be limited to "traditional" RPGs or not?

That LOTR RPG already came out? And to think I was looking forward to it.. Oh, well. I still have Need for Speed: Underground 2 on preorder, might as well get that instead..

Stay far away from Suikoden 3.

Since you played the other Wild ARMs, try WA3, which may be the best in the series yet.

Breath of Fire Dragon Quarter is excellent, and quite different from normal RPGs.

Valkyrie Profile is one of the best turn based RPGs you can get.

If you don't mind something really long, get Dragon Warrior VII. It looks primitive, but the gameplay pays off.

The Shadow Hearts games are good choices as well.

Out of Disgaea, Phantom Brave, and La Pucelle, Disgaea is the best one, though if you want to play all of them Pucelle would probably be the best start, since it was made first.

The best choice is to get Star Ocean 3, and pretend it's turn based.

No it's just that anytime anybody mentions a traditional turn based RPG you go into a rant b/c you don't like them. And I don't want to hear it. I know how you feel. Good for you.

Not all the time. :P But when specific titles I loathe are mentioned the venom comes gushing out. I wish that the genre would show more actual gameplay improvements, that's all.

(Remember kiddies, he had Sephiroth in his avatar/sig before...)

I'd like to second Vagrant Story, BTW. By the time I actually got around to playing it I'd been spoiled by PS2/DC graphics, but it's still hella fun and isn't just the same ol, same ol.

I'd kill for a next gen version of Lufia right now.

Are the GBA games just ports of the SNES/Super Famicom games?

I know it's an action RPG, but Konami's supposed to release either a new Y's or a remake of Y's for PS2. There's supposed to be a PS2 Phantasy Star Collection too, at least according to EB's release schedule. Dunno if they're the Genesis titles or the Sega Ages ones (if so, I don't think they've done all of them).

I played a demo of Suikoden IV. Didn't seem too exciting, lots of loading, but it *was* just a demo.

I think it's a new game. Not totally sure though but I'd still like to see a Gamecube version.

I also wish Nintendo would get that Earthbound game out that's supposed to have been coming out since the N64 days.

It was supposed to come out for the 64DD, and I had heard some rumors of them doing it for Gamecube, but it's been in developmental hell for so long...

Pretty much the last I'd heard of it:

http://www.gamersmark.com/news/2003/03/1/2298/

I don't recall it showing up at 2K3's E3, and if it had it would have showed up by now. If it comes out and it still is worthwhile I'll be shocked. However, Kirby's Air Ride actually came out (it was originally an N64 game), so maybe there's still a chance.

So!? What's your point!? I liked that game.

Oh wait b/c you didn't like it and didn't think it was good that means it sucked and that anyone that likes it is obviously less than you.

I think I've mentioned it here, but Mother 3 was rumored to be on the GBA, as was a Mother 1+2 compilation.

My interest was revived by the topic, so I looked around a bit. One of the guys behind the Mother series, Shigesato Itoi, was quoted saying Mother 3 would be out in 2005, and Miyamoto said in Famitsu Magazine that it was still under development and would be released "soon." In addition, Mother 1+2 is currently out in Japan.

Although stuff is popping up which says Mother 3 is a DS release instead, but this is largely unofficial hearsay.

Hm... Andrew, instead of knocking my selection of games for Damararu to try, why didn't you just make your own in your first post? This thread is about trying to suggest RPGs for him to play. If you don't like a particular aspect of the genre, then don't mention any games with those aspects.

You do realize that an RPG's plot and story is built on the foundations of old fantasy lores. The reason why they are cliche is because the fantasy realms have never changed since Tolkien's days. Until you change them, you'll never change what are now cliches in RPGs.

As for cliches in RPGs, there will be some because it wouldn't be an RPG or fantasy without them. You have to retain some of them to even consider it that way. The religious references are included because in the fantasy realm, religion is a part of life, and thirdly stock characters occur in all games.

But you have Crono...

Who, while he has a lame character design, has no actual character by himself, although he has a good game. Knock him if you want, though. I'm not going to get uppity if you bash him.

Flik: I did make recommendations, but I was clarifying whether he was asking mainly for TBG.

That doesn't justify the vast numbers of RPGs that are essentially identical to each other, that's all. I put a great deal of blame on the leader in that market, Square, though. If they're only improving in graphics and cinemas in most of their titles, then it's unlikely for other companies that just follow the trends to innovate.

I didn't knock your list. You mentioned plenty RPGs that were quite different--ToS, SH:C, Disgaea, and so forth--I just hadn't noticed you posted yet because you're currently avatar-less.

There's nothing wrong with Suikoden III, it just can't compare to Suikoden II.

Suikoden II is arguably the best RPG ever made, and no III isn't better than II. It is better than the first one though, and is my favourite RPG on the PS2, at least until Suikoden IV comes out.

Don't listen to Star Ocean, he has an irrational hatred for the Suikoden series, much like Andrew and Xenogears.

I've rationally explained why I think Xenogears lix teh dix. I don't think you want to hear it all again.

Likewise, SO3 has explained why he doesn't like the Suikodens.

I think Xenogears is still heavenly compared to Xenosaga and FFTA, though.

I don't think you'll hear many people say that Suikoden II is all that, either.
