Slayer 0 Report post Posted December 13, 2004 It's not just the coaching, although Tice is pretty horrible. Doesn't anyone remember Tice was a fucking interim coach who has only been able to get by on the extreme talent exhibited by that offense? His interim tenure on the field wasn't that long. He took over (from TE coach) as interim when Denny was fired with one game left in the '01 season (which I didn't agree with, but that's another post) where he had to coach a Spurgeon Wynn-led team (Culpepper and 2nd string Todd Bauman were both injured) against the playoff-bound defending SB champion Ravens. They didn't do to well (losing 19-3), but then again, that was the story of that season. In the offseason I was a bit surprised that he was retained and made head coach, but I don't recall how strong the coaching class of '02 was, either. Their defensive line is most likely the best thing they have, and they have a solid pass defender in Antonio Winfield... but other than that, Minnesota has absolutely no defense. The irony is that last year the line was horrible (giving up 200 yard games to Ahman Green, Tiki Barber and LT) while the secondary was good (most INTs in the NFL). This was an anomaly season though, as a tough line with porous secondary has been the norm for the last decade. They're the AFC's version of the Colts, except their defense is possibly even worse. At least the Colts benefit from good coaching, something Minnesota hasn't had since Denny left. Tice is a bad coach, but honestly who could they really get that would be that much better outside of Crennel? Time will tell, but if Tice misses the playoffs again, he's as good as done (though I think he should have been fired for the Arizona debacle last year)
