I just hope they don't go and trade Hanley Ramirez now. The guy is athletic enough where he could move to third base or even an OF position. Kevin Youkilis is expandable IMO. Not enough pop to play either corner position. He may walk a ton but he doesn't have the speed to break up any double plays.

 

I'd also love to watch a full year of Renteria and Doug Mienk in the infield.

Not that it was ever an option for Nomar to go back to Boston but from a market value perspective is Renteria really worth $2 million/year more and $32 million more total than Garciaparra?

It's never really whether somebody is 'worth' an amount of money on ability - it is more often than not down to team need and market forces.

 

And since the Red Sox paid that for him, then yeah, I think he is worth it.

 

The only time I question the amount of money somebody pays for a free agent is when there are better options out there in terms of ability that are projected to be worth the same amount i.e. Kris Benson. 3 years and $21m or whatever he signed for was probably what Matt Clement would have got heading into the winter, but that mad Mets move means Clement will go for more now.

I blame the Mets for the market being full of big and bad contracts this year. They started it with the Benson deal where he got $2mill more a year than what he's worth. The Diamondbacks went and made it worse with their deals to Glaus and Russ Ortiz...but the Mets certainly started it.

Well, the Mets painted themselves into a corner trading top prospects to get Benson at the trade deadline last year, they HAD to resign him to save face for that shortsighted deal, so he had their balls to the wall on the contract. Not to mention that they traded top prospect Scott Kazmir to Tampa for Zambrano, which was tied to the whole Benson thing in a futile push for the playoffs. Quite the unexpected domino effect those trades set off.

I doubt it. The Mets still don't have a right fielder or first baseman. Their second baseman, catcher, and left fielder are injury prone. Quite frankly, their offense sucks. The Pedro signing gives them the best rotation in the division, but I'd still give them the fourth spot in the race. Not that they WILL finish there, but that's as far as I'd comfortably predict.

Given that there are no good rotations in the East, I guess the Mets get it by default with Pedro-Glavine-Benson-Trachsel-whatever. I still have faith in Leo Mazzone throwing something together to usurp New York though. The Atlanta Braves are NL East champions until proven otherwise beyond reasonable doubt.

The problem with that, is that Cabrera is looking for 8-9 Mil over 4-5 years. I like that guy alot, but Renteria is better than he is, and is worth his price more than Cabrera would be at 8-9 mil a year.

 

Cabrera was also waiting for Renteria to sign somewhere before HE signs somewhere so Renteria could "set the market" for shortstops.

Look up his career numbers and take out 2002 and 2003. Would you still pay this man 40 million dollars? Placido Polanco is arguably better statistically but would you pay him that much?

For what it's worth, Win Shares rates Lowe 90th among pitchers in the American League alone.

That is a very fair criticism. Renteria was an average shortstop last season. His good years come and go. I guess his defense makes him a valuable shortstop, and this year's market has blown whatever visions of fiscal sanity baseball once held. Which is surprising when it comes to the Red Sox.

Renteria always reminded me of one of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles from the live action movie made in 1990.

 

That being said, I always respected him as an above average player, but not to the extent that he gets that amount of money for that small span.

 

Many people say it is not that much, which when compared to A-Rod, it is a lot less, but honestly, the man isn't making or breaking anyone's season.

Even though Renteria was the big fish in the small pond in the NL, he's still a great shortstop that's competent (not necessarily strong) in a lot of different areas. He plays good defense, has decent speed, hits the ball fairly well...he's just a very well-rounded player.

 

That being said, he's a much better fit for the Red Sox. He'd be hitting at the top of the Cardinals, where his agent already said he wasn't comfortable. In Boston, he'll probably hit around sixth or seventh and earn about $8 million of the $10 million he'll get from Boston this year.
