What did WWE do RIGHT this year?

Recommended Posts

Guest Jason

Being that it is the festive season, most people try to look on the bright side of things and be positive. That's exactly what this thread is about.

For me the standout angle was Y2J vs Christian. I was never a big Jericho fan but this angle really changed my opinion of him. It was actually well-acted by those involved (a rarity in WWE) and believable. The crux however was the slow-burn that the angle took. Instead of, for lack of a better term blowing their load too soon (see Orton's face turn), it took place over many months, allowing fans to get more involved and meaning there was more emotion when Trish turned.

Another angle that went well in my opinion was Chris Benoit's ascent to World Champion. The WWE always do things like this well when they play up the wrestler's whole career and his struggle to get to the top, and this time was no different. I originally thought they had screwed it up when Benoit was on SmackDown but the switch to Raw felt fresh and gave him a goal to go for that people then got behind. Coupled with Eddie's title reign on SmackDown, it meant WWE had two huge fan favourites and actual good wrestlers at the top in the biggest show of all time. Will anyone ever forget them standing in the ring at the climax of WM 20?

So what do you think was done right this year?

I loved the Trish/Jericho love angle. Christian geting the girl in the end was a typical wrestling feel to it, though it's realistic. The segments the two had came off very realistic.

I thought the Evolution turn on Orton itself was solid, but the payoff was horrible.

I LOVED the Foley/Rock/Evolution stuff going up to Wrestlemania...when Rock came back to help out Foley in Atlanta on Raw...great stuff.

Brought Chris Benoit over to Raw and let Brock Lesnar out of his contract, leaving me no reason to watch SmackDown.

Made Big Dave a prime-time player.

Promoted the incredible "Classic Superstars" action figures.

Uh.. the Elimination Chamber sounds great.

There were a lot of good matches. Good production quality too, which is to be expected from WWE. I think that poor commentary and storyline execution is all WWE really did wrong this year. The commentary, eventually, will have to change. The storylines, however, don't have to get any better.

That's the sad reality.

Could this be considered flame-baiting? Seriously.

The Hassan vignettes were well done.

I think they improved their website a lot.

The McMahons haven't been on TV nearly as much as they were last year.

The stuff with Orton/Benoit/HHH/Edge/Batista is pretty good. I like when they open up the field, rather than sticking with 2 guys.

The Foley/Orton feud was really good.

The Benoit DVD I loved. That was probably the best thing they did, really. They got New Japan footage, and spread out his career rather than focusing it all in the WWE. I haven't seen the ECW DVD, but from what I hear they did a good job on that as well. They're using their video library more, that's good.

I'd like to echo my sentiment about how well the DVD'S have been this year, not the PPV's but the special dvd's from

Ric Flair(yeah it was late 2003 but it works with this), Monday Night Wars, Hard Knocks, Cheating Death Stealing Life, Stone Cold Truth, HOF, and the up coming RVD dvd.

Keeping Evolution fresh

Moving La Rez from a French gimmick to a Quebec gimmick (and winning the title in Montreal was genious, too)

New Bradshaw gimmick and creating his Cabinet

Jindrak narcassist gimmick

Triple H/Eugene double spit

Triple C, bay-bee!

Creating the Smark champions

The use of Luther. Good character, slower intro, hid his limitations. Turned him into something quite valuable.

The new Bischoff.

WM XX's ending.

JBL. Best character they've created for sometime.

Shelton Benjamin.

And yes, the DVDs. The ECW one in particular was surprisingly great.

I'll second the subtle switch in La Resistance and Edge's heel turn. The Edge turn has been especially good IMO, considering how badly they messed up his return and how stupid his character was.

I'll also give credit to the initial London/Kidman push (which was never fully formed, unfortunately, in part due to a lack of competing teams), Benoit getting put over strong (not perfect, but effective), Eddie getting the belt (a couple months too late and mishandled the second he got it, but hey, at least the initial push towards Brock was good), Shelton's winning streak over HHH (could have done more here, but it established him so I can't complain), the shift in Bischoff's character (LONG overdue), and the development of Batista. Rico/Haas was also very good, I was a skeptic and it won me over, but they blew it after Rico returned from his injury.

I really can't think of anything that doesn't come with an asterik though

Yes. I agree. The Edge turn, La Res hailing from Quebec & Luther were things well done; but Jindrak, Shelton-HHH & London-Kidman started well but were ruined by the end of it.

Let's not get high and bring MNW into this. But the Eddie Docu was really good. I don't think they mentioned Art Barr in it, so :( to that.

They did a 20 second piece about Art Barr when Eddy explained the reason he does the Frog Splash.

Eddy-Brock and the Lita-Trish story. WWE deserve 2 thumbs up with this angle. Was built up for a while and the blowoff was good considering it was the divas.
