Who voted for Tony Phillips and Terry Steinbach?

If I had a vote I would have made a bias vote for Tony Phillips. He was vastly underrated as a player.

Sandberg getting in makes 2006 that much more intersting as I figured Ryno would come up just short this year and be the only automatic next year. Unfortunently it appears Bruce Sutter will be the one to get in next year. It's amazing these idiot baseball writers continue to vote for Sutter more than Gossage. I'm on the fence on any pitcher who spent their entire career as a reliever being inducted into the Hall of Fame but if your going to pick one of them Gossage is a no brainer over Sutter. Problem is baseball writers are too interested in bright, shiny things and I guarentee you most of the writers who vote Sutter and not Gossage do it soley because Sutter won a Cy Young and Gossage didn't.

Rice wasn't as good as his numbers. He was a right handed hitter in Fenway.

And here's some of the "bolded numbers" for Gossage and Sutter from the 7th edition of Total Baseball

Gossage

Lead the league in saves 3 times (1975, 1978, 1980)

Lead the league in "pitching runs" and "Adjusted Pitching Runs" (sabermetric stats) 3 times (1975, 1977, 1978)

Lead the league in "Total Pitching Index" (1977)

Sutter

Lead the league in saves 5 times (1979 though 1982, 1984)

Lead the league in pitching runs once (1984)

Lead the league in "Adjusted Pitching Runs" twice (1979 and 1984)

Lead the league in "Total pitching index" (1984)

And when it comes to those numbers, Gossage tops Sutter, and Quisenberry tops Sutter

Guest Failed Mascot

I can live with Rice not being in the Hall so long as Mattingly never makes it in and Edgar Martinez is snubbed as well when his turn comes up.

I wasn't aroundwhen he played, but everyone that's talked about him said he was the most dominate offensive player for atleast 5-6years. Plus his numbers are tremendous considering the era.

Wow. Hershiser is the only one I would even consider voting for out of all the first-timers.

I think Sutter will get in for sure next year, and Gossage has a pretty good shot as well. (If only we could reverse that.)

Gooden could make it in too.

Not likely. He feel off terribly and he's not that well liked (Which factors in some). But his first few seasons were incredible (Especially Dwight's second season).

If Blyleven were on better teams, he would have 300 wins.

It's a shame that too few people measure the amount of run support given to a pitcher.

Blyleven got really screwed in 1973. He had 7 complete game losses, and he gave up 3 runs or less in 6 of those losses.

Rice was vastly overrated. Like I stated in my column, his home numbers dwarf his road numbers. If he hadn't played in Fenway, he would not be a candidate. You can view the numbers yourself...

As for the rest, I echo the above statements regarding Gossage/Sutter, and Bert Blyleven.
