starvenger Posted January 7, 2005 Report Posted January 7, 2005 This is probably the last I'll say without seeing it for myself, but what exactly are these people offended by? That a slur is used, regardless of context? Even if he said "I won't have a filthy chink in my house.", there probably wouldn't be an issue if it was acknowledged as innapropriate within the context of the film. They're offended because "chink" is considered a slur to Chinese people (and, apparently, Margaret Cho). Although personally I haven't heard it used since the 80's. Things 10,000 times worse were said on The Jeffersons without incident. Sadly, The Jeffersons probably wouldn't get made in this PC age.
Guest DVD Spree Posted January 7, 2005 Report Posted January 7, 2005 Jokes that offend you are just laughter tax that you pay in order to enjoy the jokes that don't.
Ripper Posted January 7, 2005 Report Posted January 7, 2005 And I still say, white people get to walk around tax free while all the minorites get the joke hurled at them that "aren't that bad" and they need to "just stop being so sensitive". I blame minorities for not coming up with better ethnic jokes for American born white people.
Guest Smues Posted January 7, 2005 Report Posted January 7, 2005 I blame minorities for not coming up with better ethnic jokes for American born white people. Agreed. Cracker just doesn't cut it anymore.
Ripper Posted January 7, 2005 Report Posted January 7, 2005 I blame minorities for not coming up with better ethnic jokes for American born white people. Agreed. Cracker just doesn't cut it anymore. It never cut it. It has all if the power behind it as someone getting the best insult in the history of man on you and you come back with "yeah...well....you....SMELL!!!" Thats why violence ensues when racial statments are hurled at most miniorites. Not because we are really that pissed...we just don't have a good comeback.
starvenger Posted January 7, 2005 Report Posted January 7, 2005 I blame minorities for not coming up with better ethnic jokes for American born white people. Agreed. Cracker just doesn't cut it anymore. Gwi Lo is even better than that. Except that, since it's not in English, it gets ignored.
AndrewTS Posted January 7, 2005 Report Posted January 7, 2005 What exactly do those words mean? Gwi Lo - Ghost people. I think gaijin was derived from this Juk Sing - Hollow Bamboo. The expression is meant to mean "caught between two cultures," and is used in a derogatory manner similar to "Banana" FOB - acronym meaning "Fresh Off the Boat". Similar to the acronym for Without Papers. I think now is a good time to link to...THE RACIAL SLUR DATABASE!!! http://www.rsdb.org/ I like "bruised banana" and "lepracoon" the most, myself.
Guest El Satanico Posted January 7, 2005 Report Posted January 7, 2005 Angus is a racial slur for black people? I've never heard of that one before. Alot of these are so obscure, that they seem made up.
Ted the Poster Posted January 7, 2005 Report Posted January 7, 2005 "Chinkerbell", "Perm Sperm", "Antique Farm Equipment" I agree with IDRM- racism is funny.
Guest El Satanico Posted January 7, 2005 Report Posted January 7, 2005 Beaner Shnitzel - German/Hispanic mix...ha, that's great
starvenger Posted January 7, 2005 Report Posted January 7, 2005 "Bjork" - Icelanders - She's the Icelander everyone knows I found this funny for some reason. Probably because it's true... Oh, and I don't think that CBC has ever been used as a slur...
AndrewTS Posted January 7, 2005 Report Posted January 7, 2005 Angus is a racial slur for black people? I've never heard of that one before. Alot of these are so obscure, that they seem made up. The ones you haven't heard of are likely from different regions of the US, and plenty of others (especially the Irish ones) probably are from other countries.
Guest theanswer1824 Posted January 7, 2005 Report Posted January 7, 2005 now that i read this post, I remember in Meet the Parents, Deniro confronts Stiller after they supposedly find a pipe in his jacket. Then he does the whole 'I'll be watching you," bit complete with the eye to eye sign language. He does tell Stiller he 'will take you down. I will take you down to Chinatown baby'. Anyway, that popped up in my head. Being an asian person myself, you can't get offended about this. Maybe that one asian support group just wanted to get their name's organization out there. Bigger question: how is this movie?
Ted the Poster Posted January 7, 2005 Report Posted January 7, 2005 This is like that whole Abercrombie anf Fitch thing. You know, the "way too uptight Asian people" part.
Guest El Satanico Posted January 7, 2005 Report Posted January 7, 2005 I enjoyed the film. It's nothing amazing, but it's a good comedy and if you liked the first you'd probably like this one. Dustin Hoffman was great in it.
USC Wuz Robbed! Posted January 7, 2005 Report Posted January 7, 2005 Was the part where Jack finds out that Greg lied to him about his home life, as shown in the dinner scene in MTP?
starvenger Posted January 8, 2005 Report Posted January 8, 2005 This is like that whole Abercrombie anf Fitch thing. You know, the "way too uptight Asian people" part. Meanwhile, we flock to Banana Republic. Go figure...
