Peyton Manning wins MVP

Recommended Posts

Well at least you don't have to think about why he deserves it. I'm still trying to figure out what exactly it was that Drew Brees came back from...

Getting benched for Doug Flutie, maybe?

Yes and no, since Brees was the starter again by the end of 2003. Basically he won for the exact same reason that Jon Kitna won in 2003 (incumbent QB with rookie waiting in the wings), and I don't really agree with it.

If the Pats win the SB this year, atleast we won't get the "Brady should be the MVP" crap.

Brady didn't even deserve the MVP of the Super Bowl against the Rams. He already gets enough awards he doesn't deserve.

And yes, I'm a Patriots fan.

For the record, the only other person that got a vote was Michael Vick

Oh great, the ESPN golden boys were the only ones to get votes. I expect a five hour special on it now.

And no votes for McNabb or Owens? I dislike the guy but come on, they deserved some votes over Vick.

I would like to see who voted for Vick. Nice to see a 14/12 TD/INT ratio with 900 rushing yards and 3 TDs is worthy of an MVP vote.

What was the Falcons record without Vick last year?

What was their record with Vick this year?

Even though common sense includes the fact that they got a new coach & a new system, on face value it looks like Vick improved them by 10 wins and earned them a first round bye & the #2 seed. I have no problems with Vick getting MVP votes.

Their defense was loads better than last year

Last year - 20th in pts. scored, 30th in pts. allowed

This year - 16th in pts. scored, 14th in pts. allowed

A lot more credit appears to lean toward the defensive side of the ball.

Also Warrick Dunn stayed healthy all year and Alge Crumpler became a Pro Bowl tight end.

pinjockey ... I know that there were a ton of other things that turned the Falcons around more than Vick. And you know that there were a ton of other things that turned the Falcons around more than Vick.

But that doesn't mean that people who voted won't look at it at face value and say, "The Falcons were the #2 team in the NFC. Who on the team is responsible for that?" and then give a vote to Vick just because he's the only name. Philly has more than one name (TO, McNabb), same with Pittsburgh (Big Ben, Bettis, their receivers, plus a D that got a lot of attention this year).

I'm not saying that I agree with the argument, I'm just saying I can see why Vick would get a vote.

Vick was also directly responsible for the team's losses with all his fumbles and INTs. The Carolina game was the perfect example of the media and Michael Vick. He got praised for a week for the game winning drive and no one dared mention that the only reason they had to make a game winning drive was because Vick's turnovers kept Carolina in the game and even gave them a late lead. There was also another game they lost where he was solely responsible for 4 turnovers and they lost that game.

That's why he shouldn't get a single MVP vote.

On the Fox post game show yesterday, Terry gave away who voted for Vick. One of the guys behind the scenes with a vote. Terry mentioned that he voted for Vick, and Howie just looked at him with a serious face and said, "Isn't that supposed to be kept private." And Terry just clammed up. Now that it's Vick's only vote, Bradshaw goofed yet again.

Let's look at the last few seasons of the Atlanta Falcons

2002- Team goes 9-6-1 and makes it to the second round of the playoffs with Vick

2003- Vick gets injured, team starts 2-10. Returns as starter and team goes 3-1

2004- 11-5 and a first round bye

How someone can question Vick as an MVP candidate is beyond me

Read my earlier post and you'll see exactly why he has no business being the MVP.

From 2003 to 2004 Atlanta's offense improved 2.6 pts/gm (18.7 -> 21.3), but to be generous I will put them at 2.9 pts/gm difference by putting their average pts/gm last year at 18.4 (what they averaged in the 12 games Vick did not play).

From 2003 to 2004 Atlanta's defense improved 5.3 pts/gm (26.4 -> 21.1).

So basically, competent QB play over last year's Johnson/Kittner abortion would have a high chance of yielding similar results.
