Special K 0 Report post Posted January 14, 2005 Yeah, but you'd have to live in Idaho. The one time I was there, I honestly laughed my fucking ass off at the local news. Essentially because nothing happened. They had a story about 'something scary... at the dairy. There was a small fire but a security guard put it out. One of their top stories. They could seriously just say: "Hey! It's flat and kinda dusty! We grow potatoes. We have both a gun AND liquor store. And there's a currrrazay new Eye-talian restaurant opening in Salem! What will they think of next? Bob with the weather?
kkktookmybabyaway 0 Report post Posted January 14, 2005 But you would be free to do what you want. That's the key. And yes, news in those Mountain States can be a little, um, different. One time I was checking out what was going on in one of those states (I think it was Wyoming) and the big story on a Web site was a Peeping Tom on the loose... MarvinisaLunatic 0 Report post Posted January 14, 2005 I'm a conservative living in Montgomery County, MD, the suburbs of Washington DC. That's pretty much all that needs to be said. Thanks to the more rural Eastearn Shore and Appalachian plains areas of the state we do have a Republican governor in Robert Ehrlich (god bless him) but everything he tries either gets blocked or overturned by the Democratic senate. As for my district I agreed with pretty much every policy point of the Republican candidate Chuck Floyd, who was of course clobbered like 80% to 20% by the freshman liberal trial lawyer Chris Van Hollen who "represents" us. Oh sure..blame me. Oh wait. I voted for Erlich. *goes to Delaware to play the slots* Thats one of the things that I truly don't understand. Maryland is all for horse racing and the lottery, but God forbid people should be able to pull a lever (or press a button now a days..) and try and win a few bucks on a couple of spinning reels. Meanwhile, Delaware is raking in the money from slots and Pennsylvania/West Virginia just did give the go ahead to do Slots. I see tour busses every day on Route 13 from Virginia going to Dover/Harrington for slots, not to mention the fact that the last 3 times I've been to Harrington, which is only an hour or so from where I live, Id say at least 1/3 of the cars in the lot were from Maryland. Its kind of stupid that the lawmakers in Annapolis can't see that they will end up losing money by not doing slots since there are several options for people in Maryland to play slots if they want to bad enough. If slots are such a problem, then I would suggest that the Lottery and Horseracing be banned as well since its all gambling and I dont see how you can support 2 forms of gambling and not another. tekcop 0 Report post Posted January 15, 2005 My county is full of jesusy conservatives and psychotic hillbillies that vote for whoever gets the "gun-friendly" nod. Yeah... that's pretty much how my county is. I live in Nashville, TN, which as you'd imagine is pretty conservative. Let me put it this way: except for blindly optimistic hardcore Dems, nobody here really expected Al Gore to win his home state's electoral votes in 2000. The culture here is an odd one: although Tennessee does have its share of some of the most backward-ass hillbillies in the land, you'll also find a couple of gay bars in the downtown area that prosper surprisingly well. And although Protestant denominations sometimes seem to rule the state with an iron fist, you'll also find scattered temples and groups of people practicing every other faith on the globe, from Unitarians to wiccans to Bahai. Nashville's less than two hours away and is so much different than here. There are, like, maybe four openly gay people in this countyy so a gay bar'd never happen. I'm not even sure if there's a non-Protestant church around here at all.

It's all politics. The Dems resent Ehrlich for beating their Kennedy royalty candidate and so they make sure all his ideas are blocked. It makes tons of sense, but of course according to the Dems that control the senate, "slots=taking advantage of the poor and minorities who are too helpless to make their own decisions and they will surely be taken advantage of and blow their paychecks gambling so we need to look out for them by banning it all together and oh by the way make sure to play lotto!" or whatever other borderline racist nonsense they use-which roughly translates to "Kill all of Ehrlich's ideas". Trust me, if a Dem came up with it, it'd be law right now.
A Happy Medium 0 Report post Posted January 15, 2005 I live in Denton County, Texas. The town I live in is right smack dab in the middle of Dallas and Fort Worth, but just a little north of them. DFW Airport is ten minutes south of here. Anyways. This place is maybe the most conservative metropolitian area in the country. Kerry lost every county around here, and he was only a few thousand behind in Dallas County, which of course has a formidable gay, liberal population. People here love the status quo. And they're young. And they have money. In my neighborhood (town as well), nearly every home had a Bush sign. And down the street, a girl I know put a Kerry sign out in front of her house, and after a confrontation with the soccer mom next door, the sign was gone.....it was taken during the night. I'm sure there are other examples of this in the area and with both dems and pubs across the country. My town is well...it's named Flowermound and has three Sonics, three Starbucks, and countless other "money places". It's well funded police department likes to get hummers and then use these hummers to terrorize people who smoke pot. Almost the type of conservative town the stereotypes bring out. As for I. I am liberal. I care about the unfortunate. I am against pro lifers who say that people getting abortions should get them in the back alleys so they can die on the spot. I find that hypocritical. I hate abortion but I think it's better to have it legalized because it is going to happen anyway. I support gay marriage, or at least civil unions that give gay couples the same financial benefits that straight couples receive. None of these views I have are shared with people who have power. The only people are my friends, family, and community college professors. It's the Bible Belt, so what exactly should I expect?

Trust me, if a Dem came up with it, it'd be law right now. The difference is that slots are programmed such that it is impossible for people to actually win money over the long term. In horse racing, you can use knowledge and skill to your advantage, so potentially you can win, and the return to punters is typically greater. The tote where I live (Melbourne, Australia) runs at about 118%, whereas bookies typically run about 105-110%. In Sydney it is sometimes even better, sometimes even below 100%. Pokies run at about 115%, but they never lose. Let me make this clear - you cannot possibly win on slot machines. I live in the federal seat of Kooyong, which I am proud to say has never in 104 years been held by the Labor Party (equivalent of Democrats). It was the seat held by our longest serving PM (he served 18 years in total), who formed the Liberal Party, which is the equivalent of the Republican Party. Whilst the Labor Party has existed since federation in 1901, the Liberal Party was formed in 1944, and a motley bunch of conservative parties proceeded it.
